Q: What is a score and why do I have one?

A: A score is simply an indicator that people in the community have rated one or more of your posts. If you have a high score, that means many people have rated one or more of your posts.

Please bear in mind that a low value in points doesn't mean the community doesn't value you - it just means the right people haven't read and rated your posts yet! You may have wonderful posts, but some people, though touched, may not rate your post at all one way or another. And then, as per Murphy's Law, someone *else* will post the same thing and get 30 points for it.

Q: How do I rate a post?

A: At the bottom right of each post, you should see the option "Rate Post". This will allow to assign a number of stars to a post.

* The highest rating, five stars, will add 2 points to the poster's score.
* Four stars will add 1 point to the poster's score.
* Three stars will add 0 points to the poster's score.
* Two stars will subtract 1 point from the poster's score.
* The lowest rating, one star, will subtract 2 points from the poster's score.

Q: Can I tell who rated my post?

A: Ratings are anonymous, so there's no way to tell you rated you how. And yes, moderators can tell, but due to privacy issues, it will stay anonymous.

Thus, it simply becomes a way to sow and reap. Give and receive. Treat others the way you'd like them to treat you, etc.

Q: When is it appropriate to rate posts? What are the guidelines?

A: There aren't any official guidelines at this time. Personally, I'd suggest giving points to posts that you like for any of the following reasons: it made you reflect, it made you think, it made you laugh, it made you smile, it was a good question, it challenged you, it taught you something, or it was simply a good post.

Q: What's up with "Rate your Post" threads?

A: In those threads, you don't need a reason to rate a post, you just rate it for fun.

If you don't want to use such a thread to "up" your post count, that's fine. But I do want to suggest rating posts in other threads as an excellent way to communicate to someone that their post made you think, reflect, laugh, or smile.
