I put business in quotes because it seem funny to call it business when it's only cost me money and hasn't actually done a single thing. It was a good idea, it's what I'd love to do, I just can't make it happen. I'll try to summarize to give you a pictue of the whirling thoughts/issues in my head.
I used to be a corporate event planner. My position was eliminated but that was fine, I was miserable there. I was only making about $16K with this PT job but enduring about $40K worth of stress. It was fine most of the year but super busy (FT) all summer which was rough with the kids who are now 7 and 8 being stuck in very expensive summer camps and mommy being stressed out all summer. So when that went away, I formed my own little business and picked up a wedding planner certification.
I got interested in etiquette and starting working as an affiliate of another international company to offer etiquette trainings. I can do corporate or children. Started focusing on children, got that training under my belt. But I was never able to get anything lined up for the summer, too late now. Haven't been able to find a place to do something; I've had some interest from parents but without a cost-effective venue and a way to produce materials that would even let me break even, this hasn't happened. So, in the mean, time, all that time wasted on etiquette, no events or weddings have happened either.
Bottom line, I know how to run an event or plan a wedding; I know (probably too much about) etiquette but absolutely nothing about running a business or making this happen.
I've put out about $4K on all this, is all. Worst part is most of it came from my dad who made a big deal about believing in me.
New caveat - dh just accepted a new position to start in 2 weeks. It's an exciting change with tremendous potential but, for now, it's more hours, more travel, and less money (this on top of the $16K I lost a few months ago). To make this work, I'm really going to need to suck it up at home. He can't get the afternoon off when I'm double booked to watch the kids. I really need to focus on keeping things running more smoothly around here.
We're kinda stepping out in faith on this new job. I feel good about that. But the reality is that our income is getting slashed! I'd love to think I could make this work but I'd inevitably be paying sitters more than I could make and me being stressed out is just going to make things harder for dh as wel.
It's just so sad to let it go. I have an issue with failure - it seems to follow me and I just feel like it just caught up with me again.

Find someone who can help you do an analysis of your business plan. For example, how many other wedding planners are there in your area? How much do they charge for their services? Where do they advertise -- how do they get business? Most wedding planners have relationships with people like caterers, locations, staff, equipment suppliers, and the like.
Starting a business is a full-time job, and you can usually count on spending more money than you make in the first year or so until you get established.
