Spring Break in Daytona? - 4/20/2008 11:16:35 AM

I am not a parent. But a friend of mine is sending his college age boys to spring break at Daytona beach as a reward for good grades and hard work. Does this reward seem appropriate? Even if the boys are normally very responsible individuals, should a Christian parent put that much trust in their young adults that they can send them to place they will encounter great negative temptations?

I used to help run a Christian National Youth Crisis Hotline. We had a Mobile Unit (RV) outfitted with all our equipment and used this unit to travel to Spring Break areas including Daytona and Lake Havasu. We thought we'd seen and heard everything until we started doing this type of outreach. You would not believe the stuff that went on...date rapes, alcohol poisonings, drug overdoses, blatant lewd behavior, multiple injuries and even the death of a boy who jumped from a balcony while highly intoxicated...I could go on all day.
IMO, a Christian parent has absolutely no excuse for sending their child(ren) to any of these types of Spring Break gathering places...unless they are going with a youth group to minister there. Even if this parent has wonderful, decent kids, it''s like turning them loose in a den of iniquity. To think they will come out unscathed is naive at best. There are so many other less dangerous places and things for kids to do during their break.

I agree with Kat_d.
And now parents are letting their high school age kids go!!
If my kids had wanted to go in high school, the answer would have been NO.
In college, you better foot the bill yourself, (which neither could do, hehe) and know that I strongly disaprove.
It just is not a safe atmosphere for anyone. Ft. Lauderdale did away with spring break years ago due to damage to property, and the costs associated with it. Every year rapes, overdoses, murder, etc. happen. Florida turns into thug world that time of year.

Once when my husband and I were young marrieds, we went along with another couple to Myrtle Beach. We stayed in a condo in a quiet section of North Myrtle. One night we decided to go down to the main downtown area (where the amusement park was at the time). We didn't realize that it was Spring Break week for many colleges. After seeing what we saw that night (including kids throwing up over hotel balconies) I recognized that I never wanted my kids to go to a Spring Break week at a beach resort.

Our family had a house at Ormond Beach, just above Daytona. So, we were well aware of the tragedy in the making called "Spring Break" in Daytona.
If people knew the terrible toll that Spring Break takes in terms of lives lost and lives ruined, they would NOT be so quick to call it a 'reward'. It's dangerous on so many levels that it boggles my mind that any parent would actually encourage their child to go there.

I have to concur. My dh grew up in Daytona and it's probably a miracle he survived. I did my undergrad at Stetson in DeLand, right down the road. Daytona is not really a very nice place in the "off" season; race week or bike week are bad enough; Spring Break is an utter nightmare!

I used to vacation down the road from Daytona in New Smyrna, which is a nice, quiet beach town. during spring break, I learned not to be there, as the "overflow" quickly took over. They pretty much made the beaches unuseable.

The Holloway case comes to mind...and no, I would never advocate anyone sending their child into such ungodly surroundings.
Imo it is on the same level of telling our child to go to hell literally. Do we not care enough for their souls to draw boundaries?
1 of my kids was not even allowed to go to the prom when I discovered what their plans for the party included.

Yikes. Never in a million years would I send or approve of my daughter going there. It's pretty self explanatory as to why not

I can't see sending a Christian young adult to a place where Spring Break is about sinful temptations. The bathing suits will definitely be immodest, as well as a significant amount of the rest of the clothing. Their will be ample opportunities for drinking and drunkenness, etc. I can't see this being a wise or a godly choice.

What would a sober person even do with themselves in such a situation? How would that be fun on any level? IMO, any kid who says they think it sounds like fun to go to a place like than on Spring Break and not just get stupid drunk is either a really naive, dumb kid or they're flat out lying to a ridiculously gullable parent.
