SC approves new license plates with "I Believe" and a picture of a cross and stained glass window. Full Story Here quote:
The bills mean South Carolinians attending local government meetings could soon see the Ten Commandments and the Lord's Prayer posted on walls, pray without fear of being sued and drive home in cars with the "I Believe" plates. quote:
Rep. Mac Toole, R-West Columbia: "There are groups that oppose everything, unless it tries to bring moral destruction of people, and I feel sad for them," he said.

Everything a politician does is for political points. I don't see a problem with the license plate unless it wasn't a voluntary thing but to be fair, I think they should also offer one for Jewish and Muslim drivers to avoid the religious endorsement issue. The posting of the 10 Commandments is a totally different story.

I believe this is a Vanity Plate that drivers would have to pay extra to obtain. I agree, there should be one offered for Muslims and Jews as well.

That is a great idea, and then them good ole boys would know who to run off the road. Seriously, I see nothing wrong with vanity plates showing whatever religion the vain person wants them to show. thanks RC

In other news, SC started offering atheist plates that said, "I'm too rational to believe." Word has it that there have been several incidents of road rage where "I believe" drivers have tried to run them off the road and vice-versa.

Of course I suppose the same type of thing was happening during the 2004 elections that I heard of. People were keying cars and doing other such damage to vehicles that displayed a sticker for the party they were opposed to. Still, it's really crazy. I think I'll just keep my cars plain state license, thank you!

When the government shows a perference for one religion over another, freedom of religion is compromised. Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer isn't standing up to the ACLU. He is standing up to the Bill of Rights. I'm sure he's aware that this is unconsitutional. He is just pandering.

Wait - does this in all seriousness mean you could by a plate with "I believe" and a cross, but not "I believe" and a Star of David, a cresent or a pentagram? How so? I thought you could by more or less every kind of plate you liked? WormHeart

How so? I thought you could by more or less every kind of plate you liked? The plates are made and sold by individual states here. Each state has its own color scheme for them. Different states also have different plates you can get like the ones mentioned in South Carolina. In Ohio you can get plates with our state bird, different wildlife, the Great Lakes. You pay more for them with some money going to the organization on the plate. What the OP is about is a set of plates available exclusively in South Carolina. RC's comment about spending money on the vanity plates is very valid in Ohio. Here you have to shell out the money for a vanity plate when you first buy it and each and every year. When my wife lived in Florida she only had to shell out money for her vanity plate once when she bought it.
