Without my husband and I allowing our children to watch Spiderman movies, Batman movies, Superman movies, etc, etc, our little boys got caught up with these Superheroes. In my opinion, it got out of hand...to where they would talk about them way too much, relate Bible stories to these characters, and basically want to learn more about them than anything else. I came to the point that whenever they mentioned these characters, I would say, "Well, I really don't like ..... because he is not real. You know who I do like. I like [insert name of Biblical hero here] because he was real, and he did... [whatever awesome thing he did]." Then sometimes instead of using Moses, David, Samson, I would use Jesus...and tell what He did...and that He was real. Hubby picked up on this. He took it a step further. He was talking to the boys one day after a very trying day with their behavior problems (argh!)...he said, "Guess what, boys?! You know that you can be Superheroes!" They lit up! Of course, it started, "Like Spiderman? Like Superman?! Like Batman?!" Hubby said, "Ug, no. Those guys aren't REAL superheroes. You know who is a real superhero...Samson...David...Daniel. You know how they became superheroes? They just loved Jesus and obeyed Him...and He allowed them to do amazing things. If you love and obey Jesus, He will allow you to do amazing things too." This has really caught on with them and helped so much with their behavior. If they begin to misbehave, I will say, "Oh, no, I guess Jesus will have to find another boy to be His superhero because a superhero for Jesus doesn't do that." I'm wanting to play on this while they are very into it. I am wanting to put a small sign in their room that says, "Superheroes for Jesus." I want to put pictures of those Bible heroes up under the sign and then do a study on each character. The only pictures I have found so far look very cartoon-y. I am trying to teach the kids that these heroes are real. I don't want them to associate the characters with cartoons. Do you know where I can get pictures of these Bible characters that don't look so "fake?" Also, I know that I can develop lessons on my own of each character by just using the Bible...but if there is a place I could go where someone has done unit studies or something on different Bible characters? Thanks for any help you can give...

Superheroes for Jesus,
I read your post and found it very interesting.

On the one hand I must commend you on pointing your children to the REAL SuperHeroes of the Bible. I do like how you are pointing to Bible characters as real superheroes.

I grew up with superheroes like Matt Dillon, Have Gun will Travel, and other similar television stars. I also believed in Santa Claus when I was small (although, I didn't consider him a "superhero"). My sons also watched and played with transformers superheroes when they were growing up with no ill affects on their adult life.

My point is that, you don't really need to be so worried about this "superhero" thing, especiall since you are taking them to church and teaching them about the Bible. They will figure it out, especially from your example, when they have grown up.

Regarding photos, you might look at www.goodsalt.com. They have a ton of paintings, drawings that are not cartoons.

God bless you and give you wisdom as you raise your children in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ.

It's great that you are teaching your children about the real "super heros" but may I suggest a video alternative to superman, spiderman, etc? My son loves the "BibleMan" video series. The super hero, Bibleman, and his side-kicks Cipher and Bible-Girl defeat the villains (Prince of Pride, 2Kul4Skul, to name a few) using Bible verses (and light sabers, etc). Each movie ends with a salvation message. Another favorite DVD series are the Angel Wars series (3 I know about).

I just wanted to make something clear here... It's not that I think that liking Spiderman, Superman, etc, etc is a bad thing for EVERY child. It's not that I think that if they like those characters they will turn out with no knowledge of the Truth... I just began to feel that MY children were taking it too far...and I know my children better than anyone else, and I know what leads to what, and where it goes from there...so I didn't want this to become a stumbling block for them or for me in relating to them...and I feel like it was becoming that with them. I did not post this to make anyone think that I'm trying to be "holier than thou" by teaching my children about Noah as opposed to Spiderman... and I didn't want anyone to think that I'm putting down parents who support their children liking, watching the superheroes mentioned... I was just looking for some extra suggestions...and also, my children were having some behavior problems, and this has helped...to tell them that when they obey their parents, they obey God, and when they obey God, He will allow them to do amazing things in their life like He did with Noah, Moses, David, Samson, etc, etc.

on the whole super hero part, I can completely agree with you!!! We don't really allow that kind of thing in our house too because we found that it was "romanticized" I guess in their minds. So we stick to real figures in the Bible and real people (like missionaries, etc) who have led real lives and God has had real world impact with.

Anyway...on the pics...one of the things I thought about for you....depending on how old your kids are, but they sound old enough to really be able to do this.....instead of having a picture of someone you can read the story of the person and the description that the Bible gives of someone and let them make their own interpretation of it. For instance....every picture I have ever seen of Samson is a huge buy with bulging muscles, but that's not how the Bible describes him...the Bible says that his enemies didn't know where he got his strength from...they didn't understand how he could be so strong...so in my mind, that gives me a totally different picture of a much smaller man....maybe tall and lanky...not bulging muscles. KWIM?

Oooo, thanks for that... I hadn't thought of that. I printed off some pages for them to color, and then asked them why he was a superhero, and wrote it on there for them. My oldest son will be 5 in June, and the other will be 4 in July. Anyway, that's a neat idea...and something I hadn't thought about before. I will definitely use that!

I am glad that you get what I mean with superheroes... I plan on talking to them about missionaries too, as soon as we get the concept down of what a superhero for Jesus is... Our working definition that .......... is a superhero for Jesus becauase he/she obeyed, and God allowed him/her to do amazing things for Him.
