For the last year or so, I have found the waistbands on my jeans, pants & skirts to be uncomfortable when I sit, especially when I'm sitting and leaning slightly forward. Waistbands feel fine when I'm standing. For a pair of jeans too feel comfortable when I'm sitting, they have to be too big on me when I'm standing. I don't know if that makes any sense.

Anyways, is there a way to be comfortable again or do I have to resort to elastic waisted pants? please help. Maybe it's a middle age thing.

I haven't had a regular waistband in pants for a few years now because of this.
I don't have a "waist", never have.

My hips and waist are the same so to fit my hips, the pants would be tight in the waist, or to fit my waist, the pants would be huge in the hips.

Elastic waistband has been my answer.
Yes, I feel old, yes, I feel out of style, but boy they feel good when I sit down.

Well I am young and I still hate waistbands. I am pregnant now and wearing maternity pants and for once pants and jeans are not uncomfortable. I am seriously contemplating exactly how long I can get by with maternity pants (the ones with the wide band at the top, not full panel ones). *sigh* its so nice to be comfy again...

LOL....from experience, years....any years you can get away with it because you keep getting pregnant over and over again. It takes a while for your body to get back down after having a baby and those kind of maternity pants are a must for me even after the baby comes.

Waistbands only bother me if I am wearing a belt. Then it cuts into my stomach when I sit and bend forward at all.

Waistbands bother me if they hit in a certain spot on my body. The lower the rise, the more they cut into my tummy and the higher the rise (to a point, obviously ) the more comfy they are.

I wear low rise, just below the waist. It's the only way they stay up and dont' cut off my circulation. And I wear shirts long enough to cover any belly/back that becomes exposed. SOOOOOO much more comfortable. Because they are below the point where I bend over, bending over is affected.

I don't like waistbands on pants either. I have a hiatal hernia and had to quit wearing anything that fit right around my waist years ago (in my early 20's ).

However, I've found that a lot of the current designs are great because they sit a little lower ... at the "natural waistline" ... and tend to not cut into me when I sit down. So, if you aren't ready to go elastic, look for that "natural waistline" label.

Most, if not all, of my pants already are lower waisted styles. I may have to go elastic

You need to get looking! There are some great styles of skirts, trousers and shorts with elasticated waistlines (some fully, some partially) that are stylish and comfortable.

You can also buy 'extenders'. They are an elasticated loop with a button attached and will add an extra little give to a garment (the button goes through the buttonhole on the garment and the loop hooks round the button on the garment). I've never tried them, but have heard they're pretty good.

Aga,
I used to use something similar to those years ago to make my regular jeans "maternity".

You're right, I was exaggerating. I bought a nice pair of brown pants today on sale, that have elastic in the back half and they look much better than I expected. I also found a pair of jeans that look like they have a regular waist all the way around, but it is actually elastic. I didn't buy them yet, but maybe when they go on sale.

I know.
And yes, the first time you put a pair of elastic waist pants on and are not pregnant, it does make you feel a bit....matronly?

But, after you realize you can bend and breathe, and sit and breathe, and eat and breathe , you find it is worth it.

Especially when you're bending and sitting and no buttons pop off!

As for being 'matronly' ~ shop carefully. I bought a skirt a zillion years back in the sales and didn't realise (at the time) that it was a maternity skirt. I came close to taking it back, but never got round to it... It had an adjustable waistband and just didn't look maternity-ish.

It's all about shopping carefully and chosing the right styles ~ not just bottoms, but tops too.

I agree with aga (as always!) An elastic waist doesn't have to be unflattering... to be sure, there are plenty that are, but you can make a better choice. There are some elastic waist styles that are modern and flattering. You don't have to look like a Granny- no offence intended to those of you who are grandmothers.)

i was going to get offended by this entire post, but i remembered that i changed my login name (which used to be elastic_waistband) to just plain old elastic.

i am trying not to take your dislike of elastic waistbands personally

The waist bands do bother me, but I deal with them anyway because the elastic ones tend to make me itch.
