Saw the Anchormen recently and they were a trio! No mention of their bass singer. None. After the concert I heard one of them say he got married. Seems that the songs were chosen for their lack of a bass part and some were strangely country (as in C&W) sounding. They are still getting around in a van with a small trailer and are singing with tracks. PS- They have a new baritone singer, a “quartet-looking” young man from SC. He seems really promising, but would be more so with an actual quartet. Anybody know anything about this?

The guy from South Carolina is Robbie Norwood. He was already with them at NQC back in September and is in the photo on the cover of their latest CD. Good singer.

Looks like they're still a quartet after all. A commenter on my blog said they're getting a bass after Christmas break.

Yes, I know this group. They are friends of mine. Jon did get married, and yes, he did leave the group. Keith, Karl, and Robbie (lead, tenor, and baritone) are still there, and at last update, were still auditioning bass singers. Please keep Tim and all the guys in your prayers as they follow the Lord's leading.

They're going to be near me on January 10 (Lawndale, NC). I hope to go hear them...maybe they'll have a bass singer by then.

They were a trio for a long time before Jeff Chapman joined the group.

Had a lot of good quartets ever since.

Benny Blackburn, Biney English, and Terry Carter

The First time I saw them Jody Medford was singing bass and David Walker was Tenor along with Biney and Terry. They had just released their first Quartet project called "Heart of the matter". It is still one of my favorite CDs. I beleive Jeff Chapmen replace Jody and I know David Walker was replaced by David Sutton. The anchormen have introduced several great singers to Full Time SG.
Steve Ladd
David Sutton
David Walker
Jeff Chapman
David Hill
Aaron McCune
Jody Medford

Terry Carter always did a great job as MC.

Actually they were a trio for about 9-10 years until Jody Medford became their first bass singer in about 1988. After he left, Larry Stewart (later of the Singing Americans) sang bass for a while until he left for the Singing Americans. Jeff Chapman replaced Larry Stewart around the first of 1991 and stayed for about 10 years.

David Walker actually served two tenures with the group - the second one was pretty short-lived. They've had some great singers come through that group: Tony Jarman was and early tenor singer, for example.

One of my all time favorite CD's is Reflections of Life featuring the lineup of Steve Ladd - tenor, Phillip Hughes - lead, John Stemburg - baritone, and Jeff Chapman - bass. I don't really know what happened to John Stemburg, but the other three are a who's who of southern gospel music.

If it helps your list Daniel, I have another Anchormen CD (Anticipation) that was released in 1997 that had the same vocal lineup with the exception of baritone. It listed Ricky Wilhide as baritone. It also listed Duane West on piano and Chris Wood on drums.

Daniel,
I know most all of the personnel until the last 4 years or so. They've been throuh so many the past few years that I can't keep up, but I'll insert mine inside yours.

quote:

ORIGINAL: danielmount
Tenor: David Walker. Tony Jarman. Brian Routh (?-~1997). Steve Ladd (~1997-~2004). Michael Hayes (~2004-06). Alex Woolard (2006). Karl.

Benny Blackburn (either original tenor or 2nd one after Jarman), Buddy Cummins (1993), David Sutton (1989-1992ish), (Routh followed Cummins, then Ladd, then Hayes, etc.)

Lead: Biney English. David Hill. Phillip Hughes. Jason Funderburk (?-2006). Keith.

Between Hill and Hughes was Dale Forbes for 2-3 years, then Ricky Wilhide. Ricky also later sang baritone when Hughes came along after Terry Carter left and before Stemburg. In fact, the Reflections of Life Album is mostly Ricky Wilhide singing lead AND baritone except a couple of lead features which are Hughes.

Baritone: Terry Carter. John Stemburg. Chad Smith (at least 5 yrs). ?? (2006-07). Robbie Norwood (2007-today).

As I mentioned, Ricky Wilhide was the baritone after Carter left, then Stemburg (who left to go into an acting career). After Stemburg was Ron Rice for a few months.

Bass: Jody Medford (1988-?). Larry Stewart (~-1991). Jeff Chapman (~1991-?). David Hester. Aaron “Tex” McCune (1999-2003). Will Lane (2003-2006).

The only change here is McCune replaced Chapman - I don't know the order of Hester and Lane.

Piano: Eddie Carter. Bryan Elliott (from age 14- through 2006).

Steve Wood, Joey Gore, David Brooks, James Rainey, Tony Rush, Joe Lane (might have been there twice), Duane West (I'm sure I'm missing a few . . .)

Bass Guitar: Danny Johnson.

Bill Bass, Eddie Johnson (Bill was before Danny, Eddie after)

That's pretty interesting. Of course my knowledge of the situation came strictly from the information on the CD case.

Tony and LRBB, Thank you very much! Here's the revised list (I'm still short on dates.) I like compiling these because I pick up older SG projects whenever I can, and since they often don't identify singers, I use these lists to figure out who is on each project.

---

Tenor: Benny Blackburn. Tony Jarman. David Walker. David Sutton (1989-~92). Buddy Cummins (1993). Brian Routh (?-~1997). Steve Ladd (~1997-~2004). Michael Hayes (~2004-06). Alex Woolard (2006). Karl.

Lead: Biney English. David Hill. Dale Forbes. Phillip Hughes (~1997). Ricky Wilhide. Jason Funderburk (?-2006). Keith.

Baritone: Terry Carter. Ricky Willhide (1997). John Stemburg. Ron Rice. Chad Smith (at least 5 yrs). ?? (2006-07). Robbie Norwood (2007-today).

Bass: Jody Medford (1988-?). Larry Stewart (~-1991). Jeff Chapman (~1991-~99). Aaron “Tex” McCune (1999-2003). David Hester (2003). Will Lane (2003-2006).

(Hester preceded Lane, because there was a point when I started this list when Lane was still with the Anchormen and Hester had already joined the Dove Brothers.)

Piano: Eddie Carter. Steve Wood. Joey Gore. David Brooks. James Rainey. Tony Rush. Joe Lane. Duane West (1997). Bryan Elliott (from age 14- through 2006).

Bass Guitar: Bill Bass. Danny Johnson. Eddie Johnson.

Drums: Chris Wood (1997).

Kevin McCaw (after Brian Free & Assurance and before Cumberland Quartet) was a member for a brief time and is actually on the Anticipation CD. The solos were re-recorded with Phillip Hughes when he joined.

I'd forgotten about Kevin McCaw - absolutely correct

Another drummer, the one with the longest tenure, is Tim Bullins. He played off and on for many years before getting off the road and becoming the owner who was most involved in the day-to-day.

Who was with the Anchormen when the song "Giver Of Life" was recorded? What project was this on and when was it recorded?
I've seen a video of them singing it on GMTN once. Steve Ladd and Jeff Chapman ((??)The bass singer did the song introduction, whomever it was) are the only ones that I could identify from seeing the video clip.
