I was just thinking about this; we have no problem putting Mormonism here as a cult accompanied by a very long thread (rightfully so, I might add) yet there isn't one here about Catholicism. If it's a false gospel, it's a false gospel, no matter how close to home said gospel may hit. Is it due to sub conscience political correctness, i.e catholicism is more mainstream then Mormonism or JW's? Because surely no one can make the claim that the teachings of the Catholic Church lineup with the Word? Thoughts? Thanks

This topic is very inappropriate and should be closed by the moderators. You need to follow the TOS. I believe Mrs. Psalms 103 already stated that any new threads on the Catholic Church or Catholicism must be approved by the moderators.

Why is Catholicism not labled a cult? (A) it is not universally condemned by the protestant church, (B) the catholic church actually gave birth to the protestant movement and (C) Labeling the Catholics a cult means that we believe that all Catholics are Hellbound because they are not following Christ! The Catholic church gave us the 7 church councils, it preserved Christianity relatively unchanged throughout the Mideival period (until Luther), it finalized the canon of the New Testament, and provides 90% of the same basic doctrine and doctrinal methodology as Protestantism. 'Nuff said... and I would welcome seeing this thread closed rather quickly. Adam

It's also a slippery slope. To declare Catholocism a cult not only unfairly lumps an enormously large group of people into one category which is certainly not appropriate for Catholics across the board. But it also opens a pandora's box where we'd then need to look at lots of Protestant denominations that may not be to our personal liking.

Thanks There is a specific definition of what a cult is and Roman Catholicism doesn't fit any of that definition's criteria. Without exception every cult has at is basis a faulty Christology (The study of Christ (Jesus) as revealed in the Bible. Some of the issues studied are: 1) His deity, 2) His incarnation, 3) His offices, 4) His sacrifice, 5) His resurrection, 6) His teaching, 7) His relation to God and man, and 8) His return to earth.) When it comes to Roman Catholicism their Christology is solid...they have added some things that I (and most Protestant Christians) disagree with, but when it comes to the all important question: He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" (Matthew 16:15) they have it right. The Mormons say Jesus is the spirit brother of Satan, the JWs say He is the Archangel Michael...this alone would make them a cult. Tim
