What types of curriculums have you used for Writing? So far, we have used Writing Strands and I am considering using this through High School. I am just wondering what else is out there. I have looked at some of the on-line courses. I would love to use them, but they are pricey.

We have used Learning Language Arts Through Literature and TL took a writing course from a lady we know. She used the Institute for Excellence in Writing program for the class. For my younger daughter, eleven, we used Just Write. I will use Just Write for Mr. Manly and NG this coming year, but the two older girls are going to use Write Shop. It looks like a terrific program and I'm looking forward to using it. Write Shop II can be used in high school as well. TL is going to do Write Shop I this year and Write Shop II next year. MM will take two years to do Write Shop I and will go into Write Shop II in 8th grade.

I just checked it out. Are you using the grammar book that can be used along with it? Or, just the student book?
I saw a couple examples, it looks pretty good. Have you had a chance to look through it, to see how teacher friendly it is? Would this be something I would have to constantly over look?

Yes, you use the grammer, at least with book 1. There is also copy work and dictation for book 1. It looks very teacher friendly to me. I think we are going to love this program. I'm getting excited. It's also quite a bit less than the IEW, even with the grammar and copy work books.

I just looked at write shop on ebay and there were 2 of them: one was $55 and the other $65 with lots of bidders. I'm interested in this too because I think next year the girls aren't really going to do grammar but just writing and reading for LA (and spelling)
I have always enjoyed writing assignments and done well with it so I find it hard to teach.

Did you win the auction that closed Zoe? I'm going to watch for this over the rest of the summer. I've ordered a writing strands book, much cheaper. But, if I can find Write Shop at a good price, I want to get it. I didn't notice that the ones on ebay had a grammar book with it though. Is the grammar included as part of the student and teacher book, or is it a seperate book?

You can buy packages that include several of the books or just buy them individually. The package I bought is a family pack. It included a TM, two consumable workbooks (in binders), the grammar book and a copy work/dictation book.

Something I found out about Write Shop, by reading the copyright information is that you can copy pages for your own children to use. The student is also supposed to keep a separate notebook for their writing. There actually isn't a lot that needs to be written in the student workbook, so there wouldn't be a lot of copying involved anyway. This is really good news for me, since I will not have to buy another Write Shop I. I will buy the student book for Write Shop II, but my other two children will not be using that at the same time, so I can copy the consumable pages and use it for three kids.

I'm not talking about textbooks but ones that are designed to write in and tear the pages out.

No, however, if you do that in order to re-sell for a higher price, that is considered a copywrite violation. I don't recall where I read that. The book is produced as a consumable, so if you use it and then re-sell it as if it were not, that is unfair use.
We use Math-U-See. My first child is writing the problems and answers in notebooks. The second child will do this as well. (We only do this from junior high level on up, since it's harder for little kids to do.) When number three uses the books, he will just write in them. This will be the case for the Write Shop also. If we re-sell any book, I don't want to use them unfairly and gain from the author's loss. This is the case whether we copy or not. I do not copy out of books that don't allow it. Many homeschool publishers have a notation that it can be copied for use within your own family. Memoria Press has a consumable workbook that they sell for a greatly reduced price, if you have purchased the first one at full price. This way people are not copying their book, but they get a good deal for doing things properly. I thought that was very cool.

NO, I wouldn't try to resell them, just let the youngest finally write in it. WHen they are real little I let them write in it but DD1 is using WOrdly wise. I have had her write the answers in a notebook so the others can use it. It never Occured to me it might not be OK

Right. The only problem would come in if you were to do that in order to re-sell. There are people who do that, many of whom do not realize there is a problem with doing that.
The kind of books we used in school, in the upper grades, were hard bound books that we would copy the questions onto a separate piece of paper and answer them there. This is the intended use for those books. The difference is when there is a book that is specifically made to be written in that is not, then is re-sold or even given away to be used again in the same way. This robs the author of the fair use of the book and the income from her work that others are benefitting from.

I used Writing Strands when my kids were younger, then I moved onto IEW. I bought the whole shebang, and it was good, but I really need someone who is gifted at helping them. Writing is not my thang.  Until now, I didn't need so much help because my oldest is a great writer and really didn't need me to teach her. She is doing very well in college because of that gift, but I DON'T ever deceive myself that she has succeeded so well with writing because I taught her. That's just not the truth. Let's just say I gave her opportunities to write. The two behind her in school do not have that aptitude. There are other areas where they're strong, but it's not writing. So I've resorted to signing up for the "Write at Home" program. A couple of friends of mine did it last year with their kids, and it seems to have been a great situation for them. I'm going to try it.
