there are many different preaching styles. from threatening people with Hell to telling people how much God loves them. just wondering exactly what kind you believe more in, or tend to to do more of. the "fire and brimstone" or telling them about God's love and mercy.

You can't have one without the other. You can't just get up and preach, "Hey, Jesus loves you, come up and be forgiven!" in the nicest way possible without explaining the reasons why they should accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. You don't have to be hardcore. But you have to be honest.

I agree with Randy. There needs to be the understanding that you're a sinner before you can accept His forgiveness, but there needs to be a balance between the two. You can't seperate them.

i also completely agree. though its also about discernment and the person. and the person's situation. if your talking to a person that lets say has AIDS and is so beaten down by sin and is sick and dieing, they need hope. God doesn't kick people in the ribs while they are down. he lifts them up and comforts them. but if you were talkin to say a rockstar or a partyer that doesn't realize that their sins are....quite that....sins. and that they are doing wrong, or more so, doesn't care. then ya God might slap em in the back of the head and knock some sense into em. Scare him straight by the fire of Hell. it honestly depends on the person.

No, saying, "Hey, did you know you're going to hell? HAH!" is not the way to go, no matter the person. (and sadly, that sentence sounds like the person would be saying it in that exact same tone.) Do you honestly picture Jesus walking up to someone and basically yelling to them that a burning lake of sulphur is waiting for them if they don't repent at that instance? Sorry, I can't get that image to "click". He wanted His word to get across, yes, but how it's presented will be how it's interpreted. He gave us a choice to come to Him. If we didn't have choice, it would be rape, and God doesn't force anyone to love Him, so therefore choice came to be. Preaching should be ideal to the thinking of God. Christ should be offered and not forced. It should be presented with the love of Christ and the truth of His word, and no less. If there's one definite thing I've learned from this life, it's that yelling gets you absolutely nowhere. And it often overwrites the point that is supposed to be made, but it's lost during the translation. I've noticed people tend to be more responsive when a situation is talked out, otherwise you're going to entice anger, and again, that's also pointless.

whatever works. some things will work with some people, other wont. and maybe nothing that you do may work. maybe it has to be another person. or something else.

But what about in Jude when it says and some have compassion. making a difference, and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating the garment spotted by the flesh?

I think there needs to be a balance. You can't be all honey, and you can't be all vinegar. Both are important. You need to tell people that while they're sinners and the wages of sin is death, at the same time, Jesus offers eternal life.
