I am NOT a crafts-type person. I have however, undertaken the quite impossible task of sewing a felt applique Christmas stocking. And I'm stuck I can't figure out how to sew the next part based on the pattern. I'm supposed to be making eyes for a snowman. The snowman's smile was made out of French knots and the directions seem to say that the eyes should be made the same way, but in the picture, they're a whole lot bigger than the dots that make up the smile. (I'll put pictures at the end so this makes sense) I tried using more than one strand of string to make bigger French knots, but it didn't look right. I also have a couple of small black beads that I could use, but I'm not sure if that would end up looking funny. Ideas? Suggestions? Thanks!

snowman's face (from the picture on the package)

my snowman's face (with beads next to the face for size comparison)

what the whole thing should look like when it's finished

(sorry the pictures are blurry... that was the best I could get them)

I think if you fill the circle for the eyes with french knots it should do. I would try it on a scrape piece first. You could also cut out a small circle of felt and stitch it on.
Also a satin stitch would work. You can go on ask.com to see how to do a stain stitch.
Good luck,

And, if all else fails...use the beads. That is a very intricate project for someone who isn't crafty...were we feeling brave? I can't wait to see it when you are done...please share as you go along. I am sure it is going to be beautiful.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try them out and see what looks best. I practice a lot before I actually do anything on the stocking

My mom made felt applique stockings for all of us and there are 7 kids in our family, so I thought "what a neat tradition! How hard can it be?" That's the last time I'll underestimate my mom's abilities (the craft-y ones that I apparently did not inherit). This is the stocking so far. Don't be too impressed... I've been working on it since November

You could use a thicker thread (wool?) for the eyes, that would make the knots bigger.

From here:

The weight of the thread will determine the size of the finished stitch.

Amy, that is really looking great...how many are you gonna make? Since November, well...ummmm, one a year, that wouldn't be too bad, as long as you aren't working on a quota...

I'm planning on making one for each kid I have... or maybe at the rate I'm going, I should have one kid for each stocking I'm able to make That might put a cap on our family size I cannot believe my mom made seven of these things. What was she thinking???

Amy

How old are the children?

Mine is negative six months old I want to make a Christmas stocking for each of my kids and since my baby is due before Christmas, I'm trying to finish it by then. I don't work during the summer, so I hope I can get a lot done in the next two months or so. I'm just really, really slow

Amy...honestly, appliquéing something that small, I don't know that I would even attempt that...and I have appliquéd many a quilt tops before for many years now. I say sew black buttons or beads on it and call it good!!!
