My family would do anything for me, but I don't want to take advantage of that if you know what I mean.

ORIGINAL: phosadaud I'm trying desperately to find someone to watch my dog for me... I'm 0 for 3 so far (out of town, sick, out of town) and I'm starting to get a little nervous... The cats will be fine - I can find someone quite easy to pop in to check them, but the dog is another story... And I am soooo tired still. I don't know what my problem is - I'm going to bed at a decent time, but I just want to sleep all the time... Which isn't good when you're at work... If I lived closer, I'd do it. Then again, you've got a house-sitter, so you don't need me.

I'm baaaaack! I had a great trip and the ride along was great. It was busier than I thought it would be, but still much quieter and very different from the other rides I've been on with the much larger department. And for those dying to know: No, I did not try to crawl into the officer's lap. One important thing I learned from the officers that I thought I would pass along to everyone because it's so important is this: Apparently, there are always 7 swirls of frosting on top of Hostess cupcakes. No need to thank me for that tidbit of information. Just trying to be a blessing like I was blessed. Seriously though (actually, I did learn that from the officers, but....), I really enjoyed myself, learned a ton and was greatly encouraged. Here are the highlights (although not necessarily in this order as I rode for more than 7 hours so I can't remember everything...): I arrive a little after 10am on Saturday morning. The Sgt. that I will be riding with is on a call, but another officer takes me inside the station and gives me the grand tour. The town has just over 13,000 folks in it and each shift has 1 patrol sargeant and 2 patrol officers. This officer shows me the interview rooms ("hard" and "soft", the holding cells & drunk tank, the admin officers including the office of the lone detective, the breakroom, the squad room, the lobby, etc. The Sgt. arrives and we head out. Being a small town, she does patrol as well as her administrative duties. The first few hours there are no calls, but she patrols the streets, makes a traffic stop or 2, tells folks to move vehicles blocking roadways, warns folks about alcohol not being allowed in the park (it was a very warm sunny day so everyone was out playing), dogs off leash, etc. Other items are being flagged down by a citizen who complains about a truck speeding through her neighborhood, an abandoned vehicle on a private lot (and the "brain surgeon" who parked it there...). We meet for lunch with the other 2 officers and I enjoy listening to their stories (which were pretty exciting for such a small town!). They are all great and even though I'm the only non-officer there, I feel like I really fit in. These are folks after my own heart (ok, not the 4 letter words strewn throughout the conversation, but personality wise) . Later in the day, it's time to issue parking tickets. This was actually quite entertaining (I know, I'm strange) as one lady is furious about getting a ticket. She is arguing with the officers and taking picture after picture after picture of her vehicle with her cell phone. She gets on the cell phone and vents some more, then takes more pictures. All the while, we sit back at laugh and the Sgt comments "Keep taking pictures hon, it's not going to help your case". Why? From where we are parked, we have the perfect view of her SUV parked DIRECTLY in front of a No Parking sign... The last call which takes a few hours is the theft/unauthorized use of a motor vehicle involving 7 different teenagers (witnesses & suspects). I am once again reminded of "teenager dramas" and why I don't ever want to be a teen again... After taking statements from the reporting teen & separately her mom, we go inside the station and the Sgt. runs checks on all the teens involved. The "angel" (according to mom) who reported the stuff having been "stolen" by her "friends" has been arrested before and the Sgt reads aloud her written statement which doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The Sgt. calls a few of the other witnesses and it's determined our next stop is to head out and a few folks will be getting arrested. I, of course, am excited to finally get to take some folks to jail. We head to the first place to discover the teen is at another house in the next town over. As the Sgt & the other officer who will be helping her, talk while sitting next to each other in the patrol cars, I notice a lady go by behind us on a bicycle. She says something, but I didn't catch it and the Sgt. bursts out laughing as the lady continues on her way. I ask her what she said and the Sgt says she was so busy gawking at the police cars, she almost ran into our car with her bike... Ooops! We then head off to the neighboring city where 3 of the suspects are supposed to be. One officer (1/3) stays behind to patrol the town. When we arrive, I stay in the cruiser with the AC (PTL!) as the Sgt and other officer head to the house to conduct interviews and most likely place some folks in cuffs. After a pretty good wait, I see the 2 officers walking back to the cars but no one is in handcuffs. The suspects are no longer suspects. Sigh... No one going to jail today... We head back to our town where the lone officer in that town waits with the 3rd suspect who is also the prime suspect in a burglary a few days ago. The Sgt wants to talk to him and try to get him to confess at least to the burglary (as they are waiting on DNA results to come back and prove he was the guilty party). We get to the spot and we do musical cruisers. The suspect gets in the cruiser with the Sgt. and I hop in the cruiser of the other officer who gives me a ride back to the station as the shift has ended. On the drive back, I feel like our roles are reversed as I help sort out the case(s) for him (he just got on shift)... Anyway, those were the highlights. I enjoyed myself, learned a lot, got a lot of encouragement from the officers there (every single one of them said that it's very unusual to get hired by the 1st department you apply with, so keep plugging away). I'm sure I'll think of more funny things later but I'll spare you the novella for now...
