We got word today that all the paperwork on the wheelchair has finally been completed and submitted to Medicare. If they approve it, the repairman is scheduled to come and do the in-home repair on July 9. So please pray that Medicare will approve the repairs.

Slushie, I usually get migraines when I go out, when I don't get enough sleep, when I sing, and/or when i strain my neck. So going to church usually means I'm risking a migraine, since all those triggers pretty much accompany going to church. (Neck strain from looking around, especially now that neither pastor stays behind the pulpit to preach...also from having to look up at people when they talk to me.) Getting through a Sunday without migraine pills is a rare blessing!

Yay for progress with the wheelchair situation! I'll keep praying that it gets approved and fixed.

Thanks, Sue. I'm not quite as optimistic as John. But if they actually do fix it, I hope weather permits a Boston trip soon afterward!

I hope so too.

Took Jake to the podiatrist today. I reallllllllly like this guy. Very down to earth and talked to Jake like he would his own child. He's also former military and had good advice for what steps to take for Jake to try to get a waiver. He backed us up that surgery would not be a good option, but he thinks he can help Jake without it. He took x-rays and then he wrapped Jake's feet with some sort of medicine coated pad on the arches. The results were immediate and dramatic. For the first time that I can remember, Jake's toes touched the ground while he was standing. The podiatrist doesn't understand why the doc sent Jake home for the arches and thinks his problems were probably caused by a poorly fitted orthodic. He also thinks Jake may have a good shot at getting in the Air Force if he can show that the arches aren't a problem. Now the ball is in Jake's court. He needs to get the weight off before the Air force will even consider him. At least he knows he has a possibility of a chance.

I'm glad to hear that things are moving along with the wheelchair situation!

I have to go pack. I'm a pretty efficient packer so it's no prob.

(Neck strain from looking around, especially now that neither pastor stays behind the pulpit to preach...also from having to look up at people when they talk to me.) Getting through a Sunday without migraine pills is a rare blessing!

You might have your pastors try what ours did...you'd be amazed how close a preacher will stay to the pulpit when he's got a cast on his leg! (I know I know, I'm mean )

Our Sr Pastor was a construction worker when he got his calling to the ministry. He went into construction got to the point he was one of those crazy brave people that climbs all over high rise construction projects with little or nothing between them and open air. Long story short; he fell from the 5th floor of a building and walked out of the hospital less than a week later after miraculous healing.

However, to this day we still have trouble getting him to understand this 'law of gravity' thing, and he tends to fall off ladders. Which, he insists upon getting UP on . Presently, he's got his right leg in one of those boot type casts after having surgery to correct something he'd done like a year ago. So when he gets up to preach, he gets up to the pulpit, pulls over a stool they've put there for him, plops himself down and doesn't move the rest of the service.

So, it might be a bit extreme, but if your pastor's wandering is giving you a migrain ... break his leg! (just kidding of course, but you know ...

Hard to tell. He's put on a lot of weight since he got home and still wants to sleep during the day. He's only putting a half-hearted effort into exercising. I had to kick him out of the nest today because he was just hibernating in his room. He called me a little bit ago and said he's going to see about a job tonight and he has an appointment with someone at the Junior college to see about enrolling in classes. He will most likely be here a semester at least, so he might as well take some classes while he's working on the weight. He's talking about taking the EMT course. It would count as 8 semester hours and would possibly allow him to have a job at the hospital once he's done.

Hi Sue, that foot doctor sounds like he knows his business. Hopefully he can get Jake's feet and footwear the best they can possibly be so that Jake can do whatever he decides to do.

I hope he does get a job and takes some classes. Maybe becoming an EMT would be just the thing for him. That is an important job because when somebody has been in an accident on the road or at home the EMT is usually the first one to treat the injuries, which means an EMT sometimes does save lives.

Sue - a lot of recruitors around here have workout groups to help people get into shape for boot camp. He might want to consider checking that out especially if he struggles with self-discipline.

How long before Jake gets his own apartment, Sue?

I visited Deb's blog and she's made some pretty cool changes to it. I get impressed over an over at how talented she is.

Some day maybe I'll start a blog and stick with it. But not just yet. Meanwhile I'll enjoy reading DebbieLynn's blog.

I read your blog. As always, you make very good points with it.

That's up to him. He needs a job to be able to pay for a place. If he does go to the junior college next year and proves that he's serious about school, we'll help him with rent. He's still talking Air Force, but not putting in the needed effort to lose the weight. He did do a little better today.

We've made it pretty clear that he can't. Now, if he wanted to live here so he could save money while he went to college and worked part-time, we'd be fine with that. What we won't do is support him and let him stay here just so he can avoid responsibility. It will break my heart, but there may come a time when we have to kick our little bird out of the nest. I did tell him that I expected him to be out looking for work or working out during the day, and doing some chores around the house if he's going to live here.

Sue, glad you're being firm with Jake. I know he's hurting, but he can't exploit his pain. Well, glad he's pounding pavement.

Glad you like the updated blog. I certainly had fun with it.

I spent most of my morning making a birthday card for my niece's 18th birthday, so I don't have much to write about. Wish I did, so I could get some good conversation going. The most stirring topic I've encountered today, however, is that tonight's Night Before the 4th Fireworks has been cancelled over a labor dispute between the Fire Fighters Union and the Board of Selectmen. There's lots of background to ths controversy that I'm not sure I'd have time to eplain, but I'm sure another type of fireworks will go on in this town for a long time to come! Next Monday's Selectman Meeting (which is broadcast live on local cable) should be interesting!

DebbieLynne, does this mean no fireworks at all this year (or do y'all also have fireworks on the night of the 4th as well)?

Either way, I'm sure the majority of Boston is not happy at all.

I live in a town just outside of Boston, not in Boston itself. Most towns here seem to have fireworks on the 3rd, and Boston itself has them on the 4th (which CBS televises nationally). It's just our town that won't have fireworks.

Of course, no fireworks means lower attendance at the parade, which means fewer people spending money at local businesses...which means less business tax with which to fund the pay increase that the fire fighters want. In April, we voted in a huge property tax increase, mind you, to help the Fire Department. People are regretting that decision about now!

This cancellation was announced last night, but I think they've been planning it all along. Usually, there's a huge sign outside the fire station advertizing the fireworks. Wasn't there this year!

Hmm...

I hope you're able to see fireworks somewhere. I love fireworks. I miss seeing them when I have to work second shift. The 4th isn't my holiday this year, so unless it rains, we should get to go to the show. It's under a mile from our house, so we usually walk. Merv's going to invite some of his family to come to supper and we'll all go together. That's the plan anyway, he hasn't called yet.

Jake registered for 13 hours of classes at the Junior college today. It's only about ¼ the cost of classes at WIU, and the hours are such that he should easily be able to work part-time too. He'd still like to lose the weight and go straight into the air force if they'll accept him, but now he has a plan B.

I went to WW today and have lost 1.8#. Not as much as I hoped, but at least the scale is going in the right direction. Joe seems to have been inspired by my efforts and lost 7# last week.

Good news about the weight loss, Sue.

We'll watch Boston's fireworks on CBS tomorrow night. Actually, we would have had to watch our town's fireworks on TV (local cable) tonight anyway. Since I can't tip my chair back to shift my weight, I think it's better for me to stick to my usual 8:00 bedtime (I get in bed at 8:00, but we watch TV or DVDs till 11:00).
