I check my cervix every day and have never felt anything different. My mom has a tilted uterus, so I wouldn't be surprised if I did as well. I have so many of her other reproductive traits.

Dh and I have used nfp successfully for seven years. I started charting 6 months before we got married, so I definitely recommend starting before you are going to "need" it. I'm fairly textbook, obvious thermal shift and usually a dip at ovulation too. My problem is that dd (18 mos) is still not sleeping through the night(whole other discussion on why, hoping to remedy it soon, but we're still in the same room due to lack of space), so I've been watching fluids, but haven't been doing temps because I''m up at least twice per night. Should I still try? Is there another time I can take it? Any ideas? We're getting ready to try for another, but I like knowing EXACTLY what is going on- I know the day dd was concieved and we talk about that as her "real" birthday (just dh and I- not sure when/if I'll share that with her). My last pregnancy had many issues, so it was very important that I KNEW what happened when because I knew my due date- doctors were not so good with that...and other things that charting makes easier... Any ideas?

Pjkas, I'm also up at least once during the night, with a 3 month old nursing baby, so I don't think I'd trust the temp. Though I haven't been doing it anyway, just watching mucous, or lack thereof. Hopefully, someone else has a better answer. Question: what does three straight days of small amounts of brown discharge (blood, but not fresh) mean in a nursing momma? I feel like I'm going to "start", but haven't yet. Just do it or don't already. I am losing all patience with my body lately. Grrrr.

It's not as bad as it seems Trish. But you could start with one finger and try to stretch it out to 2 that way. I find the more fertile I am the easier it is to reach up there.

I'm pretty sure I'm entering my dry spell now. I might try it, or maybe I'll just take my temps and save the mucous collecting for the next cycle.

WOW!!!! I just now saw your official engagement announcement!!! CONGRATS!!!! How cool!!!!!! It took me about a month to even fell comfortable looking for internal mucus. I finally decided to do it when I realized I had no external mucus. If you have plenty of external mucus to 'read' then I wouldn't worry about the internal stuff for awhile.

Anne, You have made a good observation. Feeling a wet sensation is actually more telling than observing it by examination. In fact, you count the last day of 'feeling' lubricative as your last fertile day if it extends past a day when you actually observe egg-white quality cervical fluid.

pjkas, I would still do temps. While I don't have a baby waking me twice every night, I have a lot of things going on that always seem to disturb my temp. On average, I am sick at least once per cycle -- usually around the shift time! I stay up too late, wake up too early, travel, time changes, blah, blah, blah. Even with all my irregularites, I still can get a pretty decent clue from the temp shift. Typically, I have to use the 'rule of thumb' technique to disregard a temp or two. As long as you keep track of the days that are disturbed, it usually comes out okay. In your case, if you consistantly wake twice a night, it shouldn't affect too much. I would check it when you've had at least four hours of sleep though. For example, if you wake at 12 and 4 -- check it at 4 a.m. rather than waiting until you get up for good at 6a.m.

Donna, You are having irregular shedding which is quite common in nursing Mommas. It could mean that your period is going to start any day... or it could mean that you are going to ovulate. Since you are breastfeeding, you have a 25% chance of ovulating prior to your first period. This could be sign. If you are in the 75th percentile, then it might be the begining of your 'warning period' which occurs approximately two weeks prior to the first ovulation. If you are temping, continue temping during this time. If your temp rises, (and you are trying to avoid pregnancy) abstain until your temp has been at the High Temp Level for three solid day and your cervical fluid has dried up for four days. Don't count bleeding as 'Day 1' until your temp drops back to the LTL. There is a section on 'irregular shedding' in both 'The Art of NFP' and 'Taking Charge of Your Fertility'.

I've never had any luck checking for internal mucus. I seem to have "stuff" there all the time. I do fine with external though- I have very definite fertile mucus for at least 1 day each cycle. Then I start looking for my temp to go up a few days after that.

I check mine first thing in the morning. I'm usually not aroused when I first get up and get in the shower. Then again ... sometimes I am. But usually this works for me.

Record the one at the time you will usually take your temp.

correct For example: I wake up at 6:00 to take my temp. I do this every day, regardless of the day and what time I actually get up. My thermometer holds the temp in it's memory until I use it again, so I can chart the temp later in teh day or that night.

The key with the temperature is consistency in the TIME you take it. Oddly enough, it doesn't matter what the actual number is. What you'll be looking for is the change in temperature. For that to be accurate, you need to take the temperature at the same time every day. I temp at 6am also, no matter what time I get up.

You're better off taking your temps at varying times (eg within a half-hour) than taking them at the same time all the time, when sometimes you've been up for a half hour. So if you normally get up at 7:15ish, take your temp at 6:50 the odd time you wake up that early, and if it doesn't fit the trajectory, use the "rule of thumb" to rule that one out as an unusual temp. You'll have fun crossing the time zone when you move to Ontario! (I think you're in a different time zone, right?) The way they recommend doing it is changing your wake-up time by 20 mins each day leading up to the trip.

If you have to get up earlier for some reason, then you can estimate it; or write down that it was an odd one. But you really should take it at the same time every day.
