Okay, jumping in to ask what might be a really stupid question... Aren't bcp supposed to stop ovulation altogether? How are they abortifacient? Are they? I've been doing a little bit of research online and have read that they're SUPPOSED to stop ovulation... but if they don't, they'll prevent implantation from happening with a fertilized egg. Is this what's meant by abortifacient? I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but since it was being discussed, I thought I would see if anyone could clarify this for me.

Your correct, the do stop a fertilized egg from implanting. If you have further questions it might be good to just start a new thread or check out some of the other threads on birth control since this is a FAM/NFP support thread.

Oh, I know the methods are identical but DH trusted it more since TCOYF was written by someone with initials after their name

We had looked into NFP before getting married, but my parents pretty much told me I NEEDED to be on the pill, and that NFP/FAM wasn't reliable. I did what they wanted since I didn't want to argue otherwise. I was utterly miserable on the pill...for 3 months. After that Dh agreed to let me try FAM, mostly out of desperation. For a while we used condoms during fertile times, then we switched to trying to abstain, then we just quit charting all together. Its in God's hands now, and has been for probably close to a year now.

My parents are not involved in my life so no comments from that side. When my husband's parents heard that we were going to do FAM they said, "That sounds an awful lot like the Rythm method."

I am shocked at the amount of people, professional, medical people who do not know about FAM/NFP, especially ob people!! I feel like I am some kinda backwoods person when I tell them that. Oh there are times i wish I could just shake them. I am not a stupid person! I feel it takes more knowledge and discipline to do the FAM/NFP than just trust a pill or condom or whatever.

So how many of you have family members that know you use NFP/FAM? Do parents and in-laws think it is their business? I know my mom knows we're doing some sort of it. She knows I take my temperature in the mornings and that we're doing TCOYF together, but there is no way in the world I would just call her up and tell her our exact plans about it! I figured if his family ever said anything or asked I would politely tell them it is none of their business. I guess I'm just appalled that someone's parents said they 'had' to use bcp when they got married. I always thought it was a private thing!

My mom (not sure if dad does) knows we are starting to use NFP. My MIL does not. It isn't something that we talk about with her. Mom is not too excited about it because she does not want us to have more kids right now (especially since we just had Mary two weeks ago). However, she does respect our decision to use it.

All our parents knew and were/are supportive but they are all *very* prolife and anti hormonal bcp.

My mom knows; I don't think any other parents do. She didn't give input one way or the other.

I should clarify...my parents had some input before we got married (that's when they told me to make the dr's appt and get on bc). At that point I was living at home and DH and I didn't really know what we were going to be doing job-wise after we got married, or even for sure where we'd be living. I think I mentioned to my mom when I stopped the bc and she just said to do what I wanted. Since the topic hasn't come up for discussion lately I don't think my parents know what we're "doing", other than the fact that it isn't hormonal bc. I don't think DH's parents have any kind of clue. Those sorts of things are acceptable topics for discussion in my family though, although we don't get into icky details.

Stacy - I didn't mean to make you feel bad about it... It's just a totally different mindset than I'm used to, so it piqued my interest to see if that was usual. My fiance's mom has made comments about his sister's bc, which really offended me, but after seeing your comment I wondered if it was just normal and I was the oddball for expecting otherwise! I hope what I said didn't make you feel awkward. Please accept my apologies if your feelings were hurt.

Don't worry, I wasn't hurt. I did want to clarify though. Lots of things are discussed pretty openly in my family that aren't in other people's families. Its been like that ever since I was little though, so I'm used to it. It was a bit odd to DH at first, especially since his family isn't like that at all.

when I was just about to get married, I went to the ob/gyn and started birth control pills. My mom knew, but I didn't tell anyone else. When she told my dad... a couple of weeks later, he was upset that he didn't know that I had started that. Mom said that he just liked to know what was going on with me... not that he was upset about our choices or anything... and he never really said anything to me about it. He just wanted to know. Since we stopped birth control pills over 2 years ago, and we've had some fertility issues, they know that I take my temperature in the mornings and that I keep track of the temps, and such. They also know all about what the fertility doctors have told us, and what medications we have tried, etc... They don't really ask about that aspect, but I know that they like to know what's going on... medically speaking... and so I like to keep them informed. David's family knows nothing about anything... not even that we are seeking medical intervention and such. The last time we said anything to his mom, it was just after/as I was having a miscarriage. His mom was a bit... relieved... or something. She said that it was "for the best," because I would be "in 'dire straits' if I was pregnant" (due to being overweight.) We haven't told them anything since then.

I am so sorry..... But who are these people that are allowed to be parents???? Yikes! I want you to know that I am praying for you even when I can't post, since you post a lot in the fertility issues thread. I don't talk about this stuff with my parents. I did not even tell my mom when I got my period. i just got it, and took care of it. But I wish I was prepared for how painful it would really be. I think with a closer parental relationship, they can help you if they have experience in things that we don't know about. Just as I will tell my daughter, if I had one, that I have issuses with the pill. It does not do well with my body and this is what to look for, etc. I do think it is funny that everytime I have news, everyone says you are pregnant. And then I have to explain that no, we are waiting. Sometimes I even have to explain that we know how to use condoms! LOL!

Don't your parents want to/enjoy being grandparents? Part of leaving and cleaving, imo, is making decisions about everything marriage related (including sex & babies) as a couple without the outside influence of parents. It's none of their business and quite shocking to me that a parent of a grown child would feel the need to 'prescribe' the pill...
