Status: offline 		This might be surprising to some, but I was a pretty good kid growing up. Mostly due to the fact that I learned quickly from my older brothers' mistakes. Oh have I a list of stories of stuff they did!!!

Plus, being the baby and the only daughter, I had *some* grace against my brothers. Mom used to tell my brother "Larry Scott! Go pick on someone your own size!!!" teehee, I loved getting him in trouble.

Status: offline 		Growing up I thought my parents had selective reception. I didn't know the term for it, but I knew that they were always catching me when I hit my older brother back. They just didn't catch him hitting me. Eventually they did. They still didn't endorse me hitting him back, but they knew it wasn't random violence.

I usually catch Thing 1 hitting Thing 2. He's older so he should know better. I finally caught on that Thing 2 was hitting first. Took the wind out of his sail when I punished him for hitting.

Status: offline 		When I was 23, I started taking martial arts. My parents knew, but my older brother (who was married by this time) did not. He had started taking tae kwon do and wanted to show off to me what he knew. I have to admit I was impressed to see this almost 300lb individual do a kick that put his foot near my shoulder (I'm 5'10").
Then he wanted to show me his defense. It was very judo-ish IMO. He flipped me over his back and I landed squarely on mine. This entire time I was playing dumb. Then of course, my mother comes out of the house and says, "I thought you were taking karate too, James." (All forms of martial arts are "karate" to her.)

My brother says, "He must not be doing well. He just let me throw him, and he doesn't know how to fall."
After that, I just had to show him up. So I did.

Status: offline 		Thing 2 has been wrestling since he was 5 (although he took this past season off) and Thing 1 likes to brag about being able to beat him. Well, he has about 25 pounds on him. So Thing 2 took Thing 1 to practice one time and had the coach watch them wrestle...with rules. Thing 1 got dinged so many times and because of this wasn't sure how to proceed. So Thing 2 beat him everytime. Really made his day.

I use the same parenting technique for stomping up the stairs. I make them go up and down appropriately 25 times. By the time they are done we are all laughing so hard. They start doing it all goofy after like the 10th one and making weird faces. I love consequences that work, and are funny.

Okay here's another one.

"walk/shake it off." Heard other parents say this one.

My Mom used to say things that confused me for years, like;

Do you know how many hours Dad had to work to get you those shoes?
I was thinking, He's not even here??? I would never think to ask what does that mean? The tone she would say it in, told me it would be a very long lecture of some kind, which I wanted to avoid at all costs.

Another one that took me awhile to figure out;
"Don't let others change who you are." um...okay Mom???
Now I tell my kids this all the time. (but I explained it.)

Good morning, everyone. I only worked like 14 hours today. Today will be busier because I still am waiting on 2 pages worth of newsletter material to assemble before battling the copier this afternoon. Fortunately, the copier doesn't mind the paperstock used for the newsletter, so I usually don't have problems with that.

Igor has the waffle maker going this morning, so put in your requests!
