*FunBetty gets serious* Most of you guys don't know why my mom is coming to town. Back in January a week after moving out here, my grandma passed away. This weekend mom and I will be driving out to Eastern AZ (where the high is supposed to be mid 70s! w00t!) for her memorial service. Here is a post from my myspace blog on February 4th. quote:
Today my grandmother, Madalynne, passed away. She was 86 years old. Even though we were not related by blood, she is the only grandma (on mom's side) that I knew. Grandma married my grandpa when my mom was 14. Grandma never had any children of her own, but that did not stop her from stepping in and taking in three young teenagers. Grandma brought a lot of joy to everyone she met. She was 6'0", and a feisty irish redhead. She had a massive clown collection, and play the piano magnificently. Grandma wasn't one of those traditional Chopin or Schubert players (though if she had wanted to she could have polished it off without much of a sweat). She preferred to play "Boogie Woogie" and ragtime and jazz. She was not one to play out of the command (or polite request) of others- she played when she wanted to play. Grandma's health started a rapid decline almost 2 years ago after a fall left her unconcious for 3 days. She was able to live by herself until last summer, when mom brought her from AZ to FL to live closer to our family. She had been diagnosed with dementia and alzheimers, and on my birthday she had a bad episode that drove my mom to take her to the hospital out of worry. From that point, she was taken to a care center (much like a nursing home but they offered rehabilitation and were so wonderful to our family). Mom visited her almost every day, bringing her milkshakes to help her gain weight. A few weeks ago, grandma had a lingering cold that had progressed into her lungs, and the care center suggested moving into a hospital because she had developed pneumonia. When mom and I went to visit grandma the first day, I could tell mom was visibly upset but she held it in so well. Grandma's mouth was so dry that you could not understand her when she talked, but you could tell she was still mentally there because she was making faces as usual and goofing around like she does best. Mom and I told her that I had gotten a job in TX, and she gave me a funny face. When we left, I kissed her on the cheek and told her to behave (sometimes you have to tell my grandma these things), and I told her that I loved her. I did not know this would be the last time I would ever see her, but I am grateful that my final memory of her is one of where she was still of sound mind. So tomorrow after work mom and I will be making the 12-13 hour drive to her house, where I will likely see it for the last time. In addition, I will be receiving her beloved piano and bringing it back to Texas with me. Grandma took the best care of this piano, and I will love it as much as she did. My grandma's house is out in the sticks, so I'll have no internet, no cellphone (except in the nearest town 15 miles away), so I'll be disconnected with you guys. We're driving back Monday, so if I become suddenly absent, you'll know where I am. Please pray for my mom and her siblings, as they now still have to decide on the house. Unfortunately, the decision has not been unanimous up to this point. But I'm still grateful for the chance to go (and almost call it a much needed vacation!).
