Daniel..... You're right Archie is the only man crazy enough to hang around as long as he has! He must REALLY LOVE singing!

Crazy enough or smart enough, depending on your perspective.

The reason that Archie has lasted so long as a tenor is because Martin makes sure that the songs The Inspirations sing are within his (Archie's) range. All too often, tenor singers sing too high for comfort, and, while they sound good for a while, they burn out in a few years.

Martin said he almost ruined Archie's voice back in the 70s, when they would do the "Smokey Mountain Trio," which featured Archie on HIGH tenor, Eddie Deitz on lead, and Troy Burns on baritone. They sang too high for Archie, and it almost cost him his voice, but when they quit doing that arrangement, Archie's voice returned to normal.

I hate to say it, but I've noticed Archie's voice is beginning to show signs of age. Their last album clearly showed it, in my opinion...but 42 years in the same part is phenomenal!

I've often wondered what would happen to The Inspirations if and when Archie and Martin retire...would they keep going with new personnel?? Would they retire the name?? Personally I don't want to think about it!

You make some good observations. Archie's voice is beginning to show signs of age, and has to an extent for the past ten years or so. (Compare any of their recent CDs with their old '60s and early '70s records, and you will easily hear a difference.) You said, "42 years in the same part is phenomenal." That is true, but it is beyond phenomenal when that part is tenor, a part that wears singers out faster than any other.

I think that Mike Holcomb, Matt Dibler, and Melton Campbell (or at least two of the three) will want to keep singing after Martin and Archie hit their final notes. Whether or not Martin gives them the "Inspirations" name, I would not be surprised to see them find a pianist and a tenor and keep up the good work. I'd love to see Mike Holcomb as an emcee!

If what I remember reading the Inspirations book, the group is set up for continuation. Ownership being determined by length of time with the group.

Well, in that case, Mike Holcomb (and, perhaps, Myron Cook) are in good shape!

Their book specifically mentions Mike Holcomb, but my copy is not where I can get to it to check on exactly what the wording was.

Mike Holcomb would certainly have seniority if ever Archie and Martin retire...however, I don't think any one member has sole proprietary control over the corporation.

Personally, I would love to see The Inspirations continue with Bro. Mike as the emcee! He's come such a long way from the shy, skinny teenager who began with the group in 1972! However, I personally think Archie and Martin are going for a 50 year tenure, which will be in just over 7 years. Unfortunately, that will put Martin at almost 80 years old, and I don't see that happening, to be honest.

At any rate, Archie and Martin will leave mighty big shoes to fill, if and when that day comes!

It would be neat to see them make it to 50 years. Archie does a great job on the I Know project. I especially like the song "At His Feet." It would be a good play list song for radio. Personally, I'll take Archie Watkins with some age to his voice up against any other tenor in Gospel Music today for listenability. (Is that a word?)(LOL). I still love to hear him sing.

Right now I'm listening to "The Inspirations: Going Home for Christmas". I love all the songs, escepcially "Christmas at Calvary" , "Going Home for Christmas", and "Christmas is for everyone".

I was just watching the Inspirations video "Live In Alaska." Martin Cook was not with them on that video, they had a piano player named Mickey McMahan. The spelling may not be correct. He was from the Carolinas also. This man did a fantastic job on the piano for them. Does anyone know of his whereabouts now a days. Just curious if he is with a group currently.
Also, if you haven't heard it, Mike Holcomb really does a wonderful job on the bass. The closing song "He Made A Way," is unbelievable. Bro Holcomb is as low and clear as it gets. I have no idea how low, but it is really, really low.
More than anything, I enjoy their testimonies during the concert. The Gospel was well presented by these gentlemen from Bryson City.

I'm here....just been extremely busy with my new job. I've also been sick with the flu for several days here recently, but I am recovering nicely.

I'm glad to see that some of you were genuinely concerned for my whereabouts!

I'll try not to stay away so long next time!

I finally got curious enough to check this out. I talked my son into running this song on his computer. It creates the voice pattern. From there we measured the wave length and did the math. Mike hits the double low C more than once on this song. It is incredible. The crowd also went wild at the end.

On what project, again, do you find this song?

Mike has hit the Double Low C on a few songs...just off the top of my head on " Bend Away Down Low " and also on his first solo project the song "I'll Have A New Life" , where he also does all the voices...he sings a great tenor on that song as well...
