ORIGINAL: Billboy We went to Fairfield, IL, to see the Kingsmen today, at what has been their annual appearance at the same venue for the past few years. We last saw them there last year when Jeremy Peace was still with them and Brian Hudson had just rejoined them, so this was the first time to see Harold Reed as their tenor. The last time we had seen Harold was at the same venue a few years ago with the Dixie Melody Boys. He was sporting a beard and spiked hair today, but it was the same good, high tenor, and he really seemed to be in his element. I thought this current group had great stage chemistry, and seemed to have a lot of fun as well as made good music and presented the gospel in song. Brian has basically taken over the duties as mc and did a very good job. This is the best Kingsmen group, imho, since Jeremy, Phillip, Tim, and Ray Dean. The one thing missing today was a piano player. Phillip told me they had been without one since December, but would again have a piano player beginning next Sunday. Brandon did not play drums, either, but he did run their sound. This was the first time I ever saw them with only tracks. They did a good job, mixing recent stuff, with a lot of the older Kingsmen hits. One highlight was the old Jim Hill song, "What A Day That Will Be". Harold sang the verses on that one, and it literally got the full-house crowd into the spirit. Brian wisely called for the chorus to be sung again by all present, without music, and it sounded like one big, good choir. The second half was all requests, including "Healing Stream" that Ray Dean continues to shine on, "Wish You Were Here", that Brian sings almost as well as Tim did, among others. We were blessed and entertained. The Kingsmen still put the big quartet ending on most of the songs they do, which is a bit of a throwback to the older quartet style, and the crowd really seemed to like that aspect. We were really glad we went, my bad back and all, and had a great afternoon of church. The Kingsmen are still the Mighty Kingsmen! We look forward to their return next Spring. sounds like a great time! Glad to see that they are getting a keyboard player! I think it will really help bring back that exciting punch they need. Hope brandon hurries back to the drums with the piano player.

It started out featuring Aaron on a couple of songs, "If God be for us" and "After While" and quickly moved to 'Ain't that what it's all about'. Before the concert someone had told me a funny story about a big guy with tatoos dancing around and singing 'In My Robe of White' so when they did that one next I was laughing pretty hard. Anyone who didn't hear the story probably thought I was nuts! I had enjoyed the group with Bruce just after he joined but really wanted to see how he was sounding after several weeks traveling with them. Plus I enjoy seeing all of them. I was not disappointed. Someone asked either here or on another board about the MC duties. Daniel is doing a great job with this and Steve steps in a a few times as well. They keep a steady flow of music going. Danny talked a bit about Doug which always brings tears to my eyes. I can't imagine how much he misses him, I know Doug will always be special to many folks. They then sang one of Doug's songs 'I'm Saved, I'm Sealed' followed by 'Gotta Keep Runnin'. Next up was "One Scarred Hand" and if anyone of GC reads this - Bruce should sing this EVERY NIGHT! He nailed this song! Danny was featured next on 'Mercy Came Running' and then Aaron on "Under Control". I had mentioned before that I'll always like Tim's version of this song but I have to say that last night either Aaron did an even better job than usual or I managed to listen without comparing to anyone else because he did a tremendous job on it. Now the first concert I had seen Bruce with them, the church was 'over the top', those folks were wound up. The church last night was very receptive but not as enthusastic in their response but you could tell they were enjoying them. 'I Believe in the Blessed Hope' was next followed by 'Truth is Marching On'. "Not Anymore" was the first song following the break and you know Steve was kind of like the Energizer bunny on Steriods all evening - the boy was wired!!! As Danny began to talk Aaron interupted him to tell him that someone had requested he do a song HE WROTE. He told how 'earlier in life' he had been a great songwriter. That raised a few eyebrows. I'll just say if he wrote that song, he must have been a baby cause I saw George Younces do it first many years ago. But everyone there enjoyed his lighthearted number! "Praise God I'm Free" and "I'm Rich" were up next and then the song everyone is expecting these days when you go to hear them "Preach the Word". Bruce stepped up then to tell about a new venture for Gold City as they partner with Gospelink to help send the gospel to all parts of the world. I took a brochure and from what I've seen this seems to be doing a wonderous job of taking the gospel often where missionaries can't go. They finished out the concert with perhaps GC's most famous song, "Midnight Cry". Now on this song that has been loved for years and in following the footsteps of two legends in this business, I'll say this - He isn't Jonathan and he isn't Ivan - he's Bruce and that is not a bad thing. On this song as well as others Bruce has mastered vocally the challenges of stepping into a position where your predecesor is loved by many of the people sitting in front of him. He hasn't imitated or tried to be like either of them, he has taken the songs and made his contributions to them. A couple of neat things from the concert. Before the concert I was talking to several couples and they mentioned Jonathan leaving and wondered what they would sound like. I gave them my opinions. After the concert one of the men came up and said 'you didn't do him justice, that boy is GOOD!!! I heard another lady say 'man I didn't think they could get any better, but they did'. There may have been folks who didn't agree with these folks but I didn't hear them if they were there. Also, while there were many older and middle age folks there, there was a group of young folks that I could see from where I sat. They had a total blast!!! They were loving every minute of it! Mike LeFevre was there but I didn't get to speak with him. He slipped in late and out quickly.

We were privileged to spend the weekend enjoying two concerts with Soul'd Out Quartet in Illinois (That is hogfan--Tanner). Their concerts are simply from their hearts to my ears!!! Dusty did a great job and it was really exciting getting to meet him. The entire group was amazing from the Tenor to the Lead to the Baritone to the Bass. The enthusiasm and spirit that they have during all concerts is simply contagious. I hope all of Tanner's forum friends can see them some day. In case you have not heard this--Tanner is GREAT on the piano!!!!!!!! We can't wait to see and hear Soul'd Out again.

Well, I have a "surprise" posting tonight. The Greater Vision concert in Marietta, GA that was not supposed to be open to the "public" WAS opened to Dinana, RobertYork, his bride Carol, and me! This was a special concert for the Senior Adults at the United Methodist Church. The Senior Adult coordinator gave the four of us tickets and we were delighted! I e-mailed Gerald Wolfe this morning to let him know that we would be there and that I'd like for him to sing my favorite song, "God Will Pass By." (More about this later!) Here's what they sang: -- Tell Me The Story of Jesus - They seem to be starting all their concerts (or at least all the ones I've been to recently) with this song. I think it's very appropriate since that's what they are there for! --God Will Pass By - I was thrilled to pieces! I LOVE this song! --He'd Still Been God - an all-time great song of theirs --As I Am - this was done very well! Neat, peppy song; Then Gerald introduced Jason as the "youngest person on the platform" (which is his standard intro), and then he looked around and said..."really, he's the youngest person in the room!" This got a big chuckle out of the Seniors! --Redeemed Medley --A Mighty Fortress - very powerful song, done very well; Gerald does a great job on the "bass" notes on this oldie --It Is No Secret - piano solo (with organ pedals) done by Gerald; included an audience sing-along on the chorus. Very touching and appropriate for the audience. --My Name is Lazarus - what can you say about this all-time hit? Still as good as when they first introduced it! --O Holy Night - I particularly enjoyed this, especially since we have another thread on here debating who does this song the best! Now, I know y'all think I'm prejudiced (maybe a little ), but I can emphatically tell y'all that it is GERALD WOLFE that does it the best! I'm hoping Dinana will post her video of this song. Gerald started the song, got the first phrase out, then stopped and said, "don't look at me that way----it's snowing somewhere!" and then he continued singing right in synch with the music!!! Absolutely hilarious. And such a beautiful song! --It Means Just What It Says - easy to see why this one is so high on the charts! --In Times Like These, concert ended with a standing ovation on this song! And I've got to tell you one more cute story. I had mentioned in my e-mail to Gerald this morning that Dinana would like to take a video of GV singing "God Will Pass By." Well, as you can see, it was the SECOND song that they sang. After the concert we had a chance to talk a little while with Gerald. I thanked him for singing that song for me and he said he was glad to. Then he turned to Dinana and said, "You weren't ready were you?" It had really caught her by surprise that they sang it so early in the concert. She had to scramble to get the camera going! I know she'll post it on YouTube, but I hope she posts it here, too! Just a wonderful concert!

Just got home from seeing the Kingsmen tonite. They were great as usual. They had Zack Swain playing the keyboards, and he is quite a player, fantastic. Wish he would stay with them. They did old classics and songs from last 2 projects, but the new project was still not out, so they didn't do any new songs from that album yet. They said another couple to 3 weeks yet. But i still enjoyed myself, and i got to talk to most of the guys, Brandon recognized me out in the parking lot, and said, "youre the guy with the cat"! LOL. I told him, she died , he didn't know! lol, he asked me if i broght her. LOL. But ,it was something he recognized me. Then Bryan walked in when i was looking down playing with my cell phone, and i heard him say , Hi David! I had the time of my life . Those guys just get better all the time! I bought the package deal tonite.

I was gonna post last night but decided to wait for the twins to make their post about GV concert. It was a great evening at the Methodist Church. Thanks to Jo Ann and Wanda for letting us attend the special senior program for the Church. As Dinana said the Methodist are not as routy as the Baptist, but you must consider that all but TWO were seniors. A lot of grey hair there. They also had a very delicious meal.

Obviously being ouside there isn't going to be a sloped floor. How is the sound?

The sound is fantastic. Draughn Brothers from Fayettville, NC does sound and lights. If you buy artist circle tickets a chair is provided and you are very close to the stage. You can even see well in the general admission area too. I think you would enjoy it.

I was there the first year they did it and it was great. The crowd wasn't phenomenal that year, but by the pictures it looks like to took off!

Yes, attendance was really up last year and according to the folks at the Children's Home, ticket sales are already well ahead of last year. If any of you can come I do not think you will be dissappointed.

I am recovering this morning from my trip to Lynchburg VA last night (4/18/08) for the 'Shake The Foundation' concert put on by Lifting Him Up Ministries. This was the first time I had been in Thomas Road Baptist Church and it was a really great venue for concerts. The promoter mentioned there were about 1,500 people in attendance. The concert was fantastic. There was something for everyone. Here are highlights in order of appearance. *Down East Boys - Their traditional quartet sound (at least compared to the other artists on the program) brought the house down. "I'm Saved", "Mountains Will Be Shaken" and "Shouting On The Hills" were highlights from their set. The LU Praise team backed them up on "I'm Saved" and "Shouting On The Hills". It was awesome! *Austins Bridge - They were my favorites of the evening. I really enjoy the modern country style groups that have come along the last couple of years. They are one of the finest in this area. Their program was flawless from beginning to end. The ease of a live band had them flow from one song right into the next. Every group member was playing an instrument and vocally they are better than a lot of the mainstream country acts touring nowadays. "Dry Bones", "Rain Down" and "Hold On To Jesus" (An awesome new song written by Justin) were the highlights of the evening. *Mark Ivey and LU Praise - The LU praise team were awesome!! I remember Mark filling in with the Greenes and was in the quartet arena for a while also. His set consisted mainly of praise tunes but the crowd really enjoyed it. *Jamey Ragle - This is the first time I had a chance to see him preach. He is a riot. I know he is doing some Preach The Word dates with Gold City. His message was short but straight to the point. There were 14 life changing decisions made last night. To God be the Glory!! *Crabb Revival - They ended the night with a bang. They had it 'rocking' out. Their version of the Crabb classic "Something Going On In The Graveyard" is amazing!! Things ran over and with them being the final act they were rushed along. Amanda fit in well with her harmonies. Terah was sounding great last night. "Something Going On In The Graveyard", "You Amaze Me", "Here I Am To Worship" and "Through The Fire" were highlights of their set. I know the event was held at Thomas Road/LU and there were a bunch of students there, but it was great to see so many young people. I know there were a bunch of young people who were being exposed to Southern Gospel for the first time. Another awesome concert for 2008!!

Thomas Road supports Southern Gospel Music. They were the home of The Old Time Gospel Hour Quartet formed when Jerry Farwell was pastor there. OTGH sang once a month at the morning services until they desolved the group. Mark Ivey is a member there and he sings on Sunday mornings also.

Mom and I got up at 4 a.m. Friday morning and were on the road to Tulsa, Oklahoma by 5 a.m. to attend Frank Arnold's SingFest events. We arrived at the Hilton ballroom a little after 9 a.m. and got our tickets and stood in line to wait for the doors to open. We managed to get seats in the fourth row (not front like we like... but could have been worse!!) Mark Bishop opened the program. I'd never seen him live before and while I'm not a huge fan of soloists, I enjoyed is 25 minute set. He sang several "serious" songs, but I enjoyed "Bottled Water" and the song about Walmart he wrote for Jeff Easter the most. Haha! Next up were The Browns. The Greenes were originally supposed to be the group singing, but Frank said that they had cancelled a couple weeks ago because of the situation with Tarenda and the baby, they weren't sure they'd be able to travel at this point or not. So Frank switched colors for us... instead of The Greenes, we got The Browns! This was also my first time to hear this group and boy was I not disappointed! Those kids are fantastic. I definately hope it will not be my last time to see them. My favorites of their set: "Lookin for a City" and "Ride That Glory Train" Next up was... TRIUMPHANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The guys were fabulous as they always are. The fact that it was 11 a.m. when they took the stage didn't bother them at all. I guess all those years singing the morning shows at the Miracle is still paying off. They sang a few songs of their new album (which is awesome by the way!) and several other old favorites. Old White Flag is always a favorite...and mom and I proudly waved our white flags along with Clayton. (By the way, I had gotten Clayton to sign my "flag" before the concert and that impressed the ladies sitting next to me. Haha) It's always a pleausre getting to spend time talking with each of the guys as well... we felt very lucky to get to go to Frank's burger place and have some great food and fellowship with Triumphant and The Browns as well after the concert. That night after we took quick naps at the hotel, we attended the night concert at the Mabee Center. The line up for the night was: The Arnolds, The Talley Trio, Brian Free & Assurance, The Booth Brothers, Aaron Wilburn, and Jason Crabb. All the groups were absolutely great! It's always nice to see Vicky and Frank on stage...they are such sweet people! The Talleys were great as usual...Lauren is such a sweet lady and has a powerful voice! This was my first chance to see this current line up of BF&A...and they are terrific! Several of the other groups also remarked on how good BF&A are sounding. "Prayin' Man" and "Long As I Got King Jesus" were favorites of their set for me. The Booths...what can you say about them that hasn't already been said? They are just too good. They got a great response from the crowd when they were introduced and everyone really enjoyed them. It's always a pleausre to see and hear them. Aaron Wilburn... had everyone in stitches but what else is new! Jason Crabb closed out the first half... and I know I mentioned earlier that I'm not much on soloists, but Jason doesn't count! Haha. That man is just so awesome...he sang mostly all old Crabb songs which everyone loved. He's also just put out a CD of his "favorites" from the early Crabb years...got one and it's awesome! At this point it was already nearly 10:30 p.m. and we were just starting intermission! The crowd hung in there though and only a few were gone when the second half started. Each group came back and performed another song and then they closed out the night with Frank letting Jason choose a song for everyone to come back and sing together... they all did a great job on "Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey" and it certainly ended the night with a big bang. Everyone was on their feet clapping and cheering. All in all it was a great (less than!) 24 hours and even thoughg I'm exhausted...I'd do it all again tomorrow!

I was going to attend, but I had Revival at church. I actually entered a contest on Joy FM to win a CD from one of the groups there, and I totally forgot about it till I recieved my prize in the mail yesterday. I won the Down East Boys' latest CD, The Cross Still Stands. I had never heard them before, and the first track absolutely blew me away! I haven't even listened to the rest of the CD yet because I keep pressing go back on my iPod to listen to that song again!

Just retuned home from a Signature Sound Worship Service. And that is exactly what it was. Some may disagree with the stage antics but God is using these guys. The singing was great, song selection great, and the theme was great! Jesus! The venuse had been sold out for weeks and this was Richmond, Virginia. A very tough SG market. I've promoted many concerts in the area and you are very lucky to break even in most cases. Ask Legacy Five or The Isaacs. A real testament was the diversity of the audience. Just as many older couples as young and kids of all ages, especially teens. I feel blessed and thankful that I have a 14 year old son and 9 year old daughter that have ipod's crammed with Signature Sound music. As well as Greater Vision and Poet Voices. God is Great!
