There are several stop-smoking products that are scientifically proved to help you quit smoking. They can't do all the work, but using stop-smoking products can help you feel more comfortable and in control while you adjust to life without cigarettes. In fact, they double your odds of quitting for good.

Quitting, period, does work, if you have incentive.

That's great, Jordan (and I like your quoting John 14.6).

The places where I've checked indicate that the longterm success rate of cold turkey far exceeds NRT.

That was my understanding as well.

Here's another recent study (May 2006) that shows Cold Turkey is TWICE as successful than NRT or Zyban.

The Mayo Clinic page doesn't back up it's statement at all, just asserts that NRT does something that doesn't pan out with people I've known.

Bottom line, NRT doesn't cure anything. It is only a delaying tactic that at best separates you from tobacco, but in the end you will still have to go through withdrawal from the NRT at some point. ALL of the physical withdrawal is from nicotine, not anything else in tobacco products.

If using NRT helps you eventually quit for good, then I applaud you.

I used Chantrix, but now I don't even take that anymore!

I have stopped nicotine for 4 days, 21 hours, 39 minutes and 18 seconds (4 days).

I've not smoked 49 death sticks, and saved $15.94.
I've saved 4 hours and 5 minutes of my life.

Great, Abe!

Well, last night I smoked my last cigarette with my hubby, and we had two leftover, so we broke them up and tossed them. I washed the ashtray (for the first time, yuck!) and put it under the sink. I put the patch on before bed, and I had some vivid dreams. It was pretty cool. I dreamed I was walking in the desert with Moses, and we ran into Osama Bin Laden...weird. But, it was cool, so I plan to wear it at night too.

I just woke up like 20 minutes ago, so I'm still feeling pretty good. I'm drinking coffee.

Ok that's good to know, the docs keep giving me all kinds of junk, patches, fake cigs, etc. Please pray for me, I have been smoking 28 years.

I wanna quit!

That is quite normal, especially considering all the associations we forged with nicotine. But whenever the "lost friend" feeling pops up, remind yourself why you are going through this process and why it's so difficult. A friend would never do that to us. Nicotine is like a parasite and a destroyer that won't leave you without a fight and it will lie to you to regain entry. (Even after it has lost all appeal to you, it will whisper the worst kind of lie, "I can have just one for old-time's sake.")

The battles can be hard but the victory is truly worth it!

I was where you are, only at 30 years addiction. I can give you all kinds of pointers for getting through physical withdrawal and the mental battles that follow, but I don't know how to tell you how to take that first step of "Closing the Door" on tobacco & nicotine. I can tell you that there will never be a "good time" to quit. As long as we live, we are either dealing with some difficulty or are about to wrestle with something. There are some unusual situations that have helped some individuals quit, like a 3 month coma or recovery from tobacco-induced cancer, but most of us just do it. I still can't point to a single event that pushed me to begin this journey, but I did give it a lot of prayerful thought and, one day I decided that then was the time because it would never get any easier.

I will continue to pray for you because I know God wants you to experience freedom from this addiction - it's a grand and glorious thing to experience!

Thanks Jimbo. Thinking of why I quit in the first place is a good idea. Yeah, the "just one" thought has crossed my mind, but not too badly. I know an alcoholic can't have "just one" drink, so I imagine it's very similar with smokers.

About how long after you stopped the nicotine gum did it take for you to start feeling better about the cravings? I've still got a while to go on my patches, but I want to be prepared for what I'm in for.

I'm not sure when cravings became a non-issue for me but I discovered a lot of what I thought was cravings was really misreading what my body was telling me. I was drinking a lot of coffee and did not realize that its effects double when nicotine is removed. Halving my caffeine intake helped a lot in reducing "pseudo" cravings. Another thing was my body getting used to normally processing food. That after-meal nicotine fix also caused a spike in blood sugar (a reason that tobacco users can skip meals without experiencing intense hunger or mood swings non-users feel). I also found that too little sleep would make me think I was having a crave when I was simply just tired.

As I learned how to deal with those three (too much caffeine, too little sleep, and bad eating habits), most "pseudo" cravings went away for me.

True withdrawal cravings subside after about 72 hours of going nicotine-free.
