I can understand it and read it, but keeping it straight in my head and, above all, using it is another thing. And then, who would understand me if I did? And adding the thing about high C being different for men and women is unpardonable (jk), because that is where I lose it for sure. Having said that, I would suggest that bigboytenor's paragraph and djm's practical exposition be included in the next glossary of SG terms!

The informal term "high C" for a high male voice (tenor) refers to C5, while the informal term "high C" for a female voice (soprano) refers to C6.

So ... would you say that men generally sing an octave lower than written music?

A few people mentioned Tim Storms: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFbjtmubBFQ "By vibrating his vocal cords at 8 Hz, Storms set a Guinness World Record for the lowest note produced by a human. His record was certified in January 2002[2]. This note is below the range of a human's hearing ability, two octaves below the lowest B on a piano. Storms also holds the Guinness World Record for the widest vocal range for a male. His records have been published in the Guinness World Records 2006."

I've been reading the posts in this thread, and, while I don't know enough about music theory (I did attend the Stamps-Baxter School of Music one summer, but I was in the "remedial" class!) to say for sure what JD was capable of singing, I know that he, according to Mark Lowry, was a freak of nature! LOL!! I just recently purchased the Live At Murray State University album that the Stamps did in 1975, and, 32 years after the fact, it STILL gives me goose-bumps when I play it! At the end of Rainbow Of Love, when JD slides two octaves, I just wanna shout every time I hear it!!! Bill Baize is also awesome on that album. I saw JD and the Stamps in 1995 in Henderson, Kentucky, and while it was apparent that JD was not in the best health, he still put on a fabulous show, and he still had the depth! I'll never forget, Rick Strickland, who was singing tenor for them at the time, came out on stage before the show and warned the people sitting on the front row, "You folks might want to move back a few rows!" They were sitting in front of the stack, and the bass would have probably stopped their hearts! Granted, most super-low bass singing is produced by clever mic-gain techniques and lots of volume, but JD was unique and will never be replicated! He may not have had the tone quality of George Younce or others in the field today, but He could easily sing lower, and he's my favorite bass singer ever (with the exception, of course, of Mike Holcomb...gotta be loyal, folks!)

I'm really glad I stumbled upon your site here. I remember taking a cassette into my Choir teacher in 1987. I said: "Mr. Ransom, this background vocalist for Elvis hits so far low, I'd SWEAR it's the second to the last key on the piano!". I pushed play & you ALL know that it was a wonderful song with Elvis, called "Way Down". We both were smiling ear to ear as we picked our jaws up off the floor (he being a high-pitched Tenor). Yes, Mr. J.D. Sumner, that was way down - - 2nd to the bottom of the keys. I tried to hit it (as a fellow Bassist/Baritone), but felt like my larynx was about to shoot right out of my throat. Impressed I was indeed. Now that I'm almost 39, I still try & it hurts but I'll never be there. The Bassist for the Statler Brothers really kills me too (and an incredible range has he). There's a lead singer of a rock band by the name of Peter (Type O Negative) who sings majorly low as well. But I got his tagged. Sorry my friends, I listen to all music, though that is certainly NOT Christian music. Don't go there, unless you want to be appauled. I gave it a chance & I like only some of it. But I was really enthused to see how each of these wonderful youths, were so excited to talk about the Low Double C & all that's been shared in this blog/string. Rather than talking about what's accurate, I'll say one thing: Whether you be in Middle, Double Low or Double High C, you've got to understand one thing - it is a unit of measure. Just like Time, Length, Weight AND all of the measurements you can think of - - even Space itself - - they are ALL relative. Relative to what you use to measure it with. Just by reading this, people have interpreted what the others were saying, it was all a great read. As long as we can all try & harmonize together, THEN our voices will be as one, no matter what scale it is measured upon. Thanks for this wonderful site! God Bless J.D. Sumner & Elvis and all of us FANS! -Lone Wolf
