*Actual Hiker Comments*

These are actual comments left last year on Forest Service registration sheets and comment cards by backpackers completing wilderness camping trips:

"A small deer came into my camp and stole my bag of pickles. Is there a way I can get reimbursed? Please call."

"Escalators would help on steep uphill sections."

"Instead of a permit system or regulations, the Forest Service needs to reduce worldwide population growth to limit the number of visitors to wilderness."

"Trails need to be wider so people can walk while holding hands."

"Ban walking sticks in wilderness. Hikers that use walking sticks are more likely to chase animals."

"All the mile markers are missing this year."

"Found a smoldering cigarette left by a horse."

"Trails need to be reconstructed. Please avoid building trails that go uphill."

"Too many bugs and leeches and spiders and spider webs. Please spray the wilderness to rid the area of these pests."

"Please pave the trails so they can be plowed of snow in the winter."

"Chair lifts need to be in some places so that we can get to wonderful views without having to hike to them."

"The coyotes made too much noise last night and kept me awake. Please eradicate these annoying animals."

"Reflectors need to be placed on trees every 50 feet so people can hike at night with flashlights."

"Need more signs to keep area pristine."

"A McDonald's would be nice at the trail head."

"The places where trails do not exist are not well marked."

"Too many rocks in the mountains."

Yes I have when I was younger. We had this piece of property in Oregon which you could not build anything on so we used for camping a couple of times. It fine then...But I would not do it now I am not much of a wildlife girl. I am more of a city girl.

I experienced Racism today. Not Racism against me but just the uglyness of hate. There were two men sitting in front of me on the bus and they were talking about the Japanese. How they have ruined our economy. How they hated the (insert F word here) Japanese. That there was a good reason why we bombed that country.

There was more but I don't need to into it because it angers me the way they spoke. It angered me on the bus. And I know it showed. I thought was these were not the kind of people who should have children. I had to move seats because I felt I going to explode...And tell them what I thought and that would probably get me into trouble.

All I can say is thank God for people like you that can still get upset at that kind of talk. Racism is a cancer on this country.

For me I think being mixed or Hapa as we call it in Hawaii has something to do with it. All together I am Filipino, German, Spainish, English, Irish, and Scottish. And the fact that I have another time experienced racism in some form myself.
