Born and Raised in Dallas, currently live in a southwest suburb, and just got married to a PA girl. (Very happy to be a Yankee! love the wife) {please excuse the wife typing over the shoulder}
Have lived here all my life. Love the Dallas Area, except the local politics, and love the Rangers, and Stars, (Can do with out the Mavs, and can't wait till Jones sells the Cowboys)

I wasn't born in Texas, but got here as soon as I could! Originally from the midwest... Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska... by way of Arizona. Husband is originally from Iowa, and feels he,too, finally came home when we got here over six years ago. We moved his parents here from Iowa five years ago; my dad and his wife moved here from Florida in January. Must be Texas' magnetic personality. We're just west of the Metroplex in Parker County.

I was born in Ft. Worth at Harris Hospital. LOL Along with my brother and father. Mom was born in Dallas.
Both sides of the family are there. My Aunt and Uncle finally came back to retire (missionaries) after living all over the world! Its neat to have cousins that were born all over the world!
We moved to the Midwest when my father was transferred! We do like going home to visit when we can! Now that I'm married and have children - I doubt I will ever live there again. LOL but I can dream!

Hello to all!
Whoever said they didn't understand the Texas thing until they moved there, I have the opposite story. LOL!! I had visited many places, but I was oblivious to the Texas pride thang and thought people outside the state made a bigger deal out of it than Texans do. But now I'm singin' another tune. I have lived out of Texas for seven years, and I get it now. There is no place like Texas. No, it's not the prettiest state. Far from it -- although I know there are some pretty places. But it's not how the place looks. It really is a state of mind.
Whoever said West Texans were friendlier, I generally agree with you. I think most places in Texas are pretty friendly as a whole, but West Texas is the friendlist IMO. We have some friends who live right outside of Brady, Texas, and we used to visit them quite a bit as well as some other places further west of there. The people are so nice in that area. Sometime though I'll have to tell the story about sleeping with the rattlers.  That's my one big qualm about West Texas.

When I was a kid my Dad pastored a church in West Texas. You're right, the people are very friendly up there. We really enjoyed it.
If you want to swap rattler stories, I can tell you how I nearly stepped on one as a kid! 
I hear you about the heat. I was just in Dallas for the past couple of weeks, where the average temp was 100. I didn't mind, but I worried that my British husband wouldn't survive. To my surprise, though, he made it through just fine.

Alright, here's mine, Lori.
My husband had been invited to preach at a church out in the Brownwood area, and we went to stay with these people who ran a ranch that did outfitting and trail rides and hunting expeditions and such. But this was their off season when we went. We got down there, and they told us that we would stay in their lodge down on the river (Colorado). I was exicted about this, and after dinner, I was admiring the artifacts (arrowheads and such) that they had mounted on their living room wall. Then their 16 year old son showed me a big jar of rattles on the book shelf. I shuddered, but he proceeded anyway to tell me about how they caught rattlers and sold them for the meat and skins, and how they were stored down at the lodge. I thought, "Yuck -- a bunch of dead snakes down there with me while I'm sleepin'." Didn't give me a warm fuzzy at all.
So we finally got in the car to drive to the lodge, and of course it's so dark out there that you can't see your hand in front of your face. I had a small baby at the time and was pregnant with my second child and it was August. When we got out of the car, I insisted on someone holding a flashlight to my feet because I was freaking out about the snakes. Then we entered this lodge and to use the word gorgeous would not be sufficient to describe this place. It slept about 120 people, and it was absolutely a beautiful lodge with a huge rock fireplace down one wall and a bar down another, and it was just a cool looking place. Then I heard it -- rattling. I looked toward the sound and there at the end of this lobby was one of those 200 gallon aquariums full of live rattlesnakes. I nearly fainted, but I wanted to be a mature little Christian, so I put my chin up, Inside I was dying.
Well, it turns out that they had forgotten to turn on the air conditioner and they apologized profusely, but they still had to leave the door to our room open so that it would cool off much quicker. Of ALL THE STINKIN' PLACES in that huge lodge that they could have put us, they put us in a room a few feet from the aquarium. I was livid, but didn't trust myself to speak and not make a scene. My neck was turning red and there was a ringing in my ears and I was just generally having a major anxiety attack -- so I kept quiet. My husband was outside talking to someone and then everyone cleared out and he walked in, and when he realized what was going on, it was so late at night we felt we shouldn't ask to be moved. Plus they would have to drive back down there to open any of the other rooms. About half way through the night I had to go to the bathroom, but I would not budge off that bed to set my foot on the floor and I never went to sleep. Oh, I should mention that they did cover the top of the aquarium for us because they said that would cut down on the rattling, but not to worry because they couldn't get out. 
I said, "Lord, I don't know what's going on, but I"m having a really hard time just resting in this situation." I prayed all night long.
The next day I was dressed and ready to go pronto, and we went off to church. We got there early and people were trickling in and several ladies came to speak to me and introduce themselves. This really neat older lady I had met the day before came up to ask me about my stay. "Did you stay at the lodge last night?"she asked. I said, "Yes, ma'am, I did." "How did you do that?" she asked. Not realizing she might know about the snakes, I just said, "Well, I don't know; I just did." Then she said, "I am so sorry I didn't know they were going to put you in the lodge. If I had known that, I would have insisted that you come to my house. Next time you come, you're staying with me -- if you would like. I have lived in West Texas all of my life, and I COULD NOT have slept in the same building with that tank of rattlers!" Then I proceeded to tell her that I really had a fear of snakes, but that these people had told me that they couldn't get out even if the top wasn't covered." She started laughing and said, "Oh, hon, snakes can and do get out." I about fainted. I have since learned that they can and do sometimes get out of glass.

Yuk.
When I was about 6, my Dad pastored in this dinky town in the panhandle of Texas. It was such a small town that the school had closed down, and the town just used it for community events.
One afternoon my mother and some ladies met there to plan a craft fair, while us kids played in the old schoolyard. A girlfriend and I decided to go inside and ask our mothers something-or-other. As we ran through the foyer we suddenly heard this huge rattling sound. Needless to say, we instantly froze. As we looked over to our right, we saw a giant rattler stretched along the base of the wall. (We later speculated that it had crawled inside to get away from the heat outside.) We both screamed, then my friend ran inside while I ran outside. Suddenly, everybody was screaming, mothers and kids. My mother ran outside to round the kids up, and everybody began climging onto the cars, which were parked nearby. Then my mother ran next door to the cotton gin, and some of the men came over and shot the snake. Afterwards they said it had been shedding its skin, and so couldn't see. We had stood so close to it, that the men said if the snake had been able to see it probably would have bitten my friend and I. Instead, it attacked the wall behind it.

I cannot believe I've lived in Amarillo my entire life and have NEVER seen a rattle snake (outside of a cage). I'm thankful for that, too.
I know that people who live in less developed areas of town (fewer houses and businesses, not poorer) have issues with snakes sometimes.
I think the saying is, I wasn't born in Texas but I got here as quick as I could.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS - TEXAS STYLE People here in Texas have trouble with all those "shalls" and "shall nots" in the Ten Commandments. Folks here just aren't used to talking in those terms. So, some folks out in west Texas got together and translated the "King James" into "King Ranch" language: Ten Commandments, cowboy style.

Ooh, I missed this post earlier. My brother lives in a Southwest suburb (Cedar Hill to be exact). I am stunned at how developed that area and south of there has become. I remember when Alvarado to Duncanville on Hwy 67 was barren. It almost looks like 75 going through Richardson now. Wow!

I don't get why that keeps happening. I guess I'm not up to speed on the ins and outs of this new system. I noticed in my subscriptions that a couple of things were not highlighted that I knew I hadn't read, so I came over here and checked this thread and lo and behold, there are two posts. I don't get it. End of rant.
