Kim, I don't know what a "real" Moby is like. I made my own out of jersey knit, and it's great. Mine looks sloppy though, because I have lousy scissors. You just buiy 5 meters of fabric, then when you get home, you cut it lengthwise so it's 52cm wide by 5 meters long, and that's it.

the one I have is 18ft (548 cm) long and 24 in (61cm) wide. The ends are tapered down at the ends so that it isn't as bulky on the ends. It is two layers, serged together on the edges (but like I said, that isn't necessary). The length you could easily cut down to a shorter one....it is big on me and I am much bigger then you.

Ooh, maybe I'll taper mine too... About how many inches or feet from the end sdoes it begin to taper?

Thanks for the specs =)

I found a 'gently used' one today for $30!!! It's indigo, which isn't my favourite colour, but for $30, I really won't complain! I'm hoping to set up a time to go pick it up

I'm leaving now to go pick up my new-to-me Moby!!! The lady I'm picking it up from is going to show me how to use it, too. She's got 3 littles (the youngest is 3 mos.), so I'm going over at nap time!

Cool beans! I hope you like it! There's also links to instructions in the pinned topic Women's Links or something like that made by Kath.

I'm so jealous!! Yea for you! I really want to get a Moby and have thought about making one, but I can't seem to convince myself that I am capable of doing it. Maybe I'm just too lazy (which is not unusual for me). I have not actively looked at prices to buy one yet. I just know I really really want to get one.

Nicole, I SO don't sew. I can't even hardly cut a straight line (which is all that is required), but mine still came out totally usable. When I made mine, I actually made two because of the width of the fabric I bought. It was like 55 inches wide or something. I'll check to see if my friend still has the other one. I know she doesn't use it anymore, so I'll see if she'll give it back, so I can mail it to you. I dunno why I didn't think of that earlier. You'll have to clean up the edges a little though because of sloppy scissor work, but it'll work just fine. It's blue like THIS.

That is a very generous offer and I appreciate it. We are pretty good cleaner uppers here, so I think mom and I could tackle that pretty good. My sister gave us her stroller and it was pretty dirty from sitting in storage, but it looks wonderful now! Do you know how long it is? I am "fluffy" (that term cracks me up) and I don't want you to go to all this effort if it is too short for me. Again, thank you for your kindness.

If it's the regular length of a moby, it's looooooooooong =) I really had no idea how long they are until the girl I bought it from was walking me through the steps on how to tie it! It's a really pretty blue ... the official colour is "indigo". I'll have to tie it on me and put a baby doll in it or something and take a pic for the blog!

she said up above that hers is five meters long...so roughly 16.5 feet long. The official one is 18ft long...so not much smaller...and I think it would fit you fine Nicole (I am fluffy too....and the official one is long on me...well, when I am not pregnant it is long on me a little...I just don't wrap it around twice like smaller people have to do)

I'm going to buy a mini Moby for the new baby to give to Hannah. We always have gifts for the older siblings from the new baby. She'll be so excited to wear her dollies like Mommy wears the baby!

IF I had my sewing machine then I could make that mini-meitai I promised you a long time ago for Hannah!!!! I still have the material all set aside, and it's cut out...just no way to sew it up for her.

It's okay, Sarah! I still love ya. Plus, I use the Moby when they're real little, so maybe your machine will be fixed by the time I start using the mei-tai.

In that pic I was wearing size 18, and I wrapped around twice, so it ought to fit around anyone at least once. My friend hasn't written back yet, but I'll be giving her a call tomorrow, so I'll let you know then if I can send it to you.

I just remeasured mine. It's actually 6 yards, 18 feet. I thought yards and meters were the same thing. I forgot that I got an extra yard from the directions because I thought that because I'm fluffy, I'd need it bigger than that. But, then I found out the real deal Moby is 18.5 feet long.

I went to price cotton knit and jersey knit the other day, and they were $12 a metre! I might as well go buy the official moby!
Now, there might have been some on the big discount pile, but I didn't really know what I was looking for there.
I'm planning to take my mom sometime, she'll help me.

yeah that's why I bought the official one....cause I couldn't find the material for the price of buying the wrap off ebay.

I ran into the same issue, but because of the width of the fabric, it made it worth it because I made two wraps from it. The fabric was like $6 a yard at Joann's.

I would LOVE to find the material at $6/yd ... as was previously mentioned, here in Canada it is around $12 per metre, and the fabric isn't even as wide. Figuring on 5 metres, that is $60, and it would only make one wrap. I'd go with the real deal from the Moby website instead!
