What kind of material is it made from? Can you just make one? I imagine it needs to be a little thin if you are wrapping it that many times...

glad this is back up. I don't want to get a moby because I am not that into slings, but I did want to get an ergo, that way hubby could use it too. Has anyone used the ergo? We are going to be going interstate about 12 weeks after the baby is born and want to use it then. Do I have to use that newborn insert still? I do not imagine I will use the ergo before then so if I don't have to buy the insert I would rather not.

The Moby is a wrap, not a sling, and Daddies can wear the Moby just as easy as Mommies.  But...not everything works for everyone.
Sarah knows what kind of material it is, I'm sure. I'm not good with that stuff. It's kind of a stretchy cotton?? I think Maggie made one out of a plain old sheet...she has pictures on her blog.

The Moby can be made from a couple different fabrics. I've seen stretch knit, gauze, and plain old cotton used successfully. My SIL has one thats made from a Lycra type of material but I don't really like hers.
Nicole, You could try a Mei Tei if you like the idea of the Ergo, they carry in a similar fashion.

but isn't a mei tei made of just material, my hubby would refuse to wear anything like that unless it looked like a backpack which is what the ergo looks like

ok...sorry...I missed a few posts...so now I will go back and respond to them...
the official Moby Wrap that you buy offline is made of doubled (two layers) Jersey Knit material, surged on the sides, tapered on the end. Mine is in the van but I will get it out at lunch when Paul comes home and measure it so that anyone wanting to actually make their own will have those dimensions.
Wrapping the Moby is very simple. I do not do it like the instruction sheet, I actually do it a little different, but it's one swoop with my one hand instead of doing it even on both sides. It still looks the same, but instead of tying it on the front I tie it on the side. Also I take it off in such a way that I can usually wear it two or three times before I have to re-tie it...I take int off in three rings and hang it like that on the back of the seat...to put it back on just put all three rings around my waist again and put the shoulder parts up on my shoulders. It's really not that difficult. I have tried to explain in writing how I tie mine but I think it's too confusing...if anyone is really interested I guess I could make a video of how I tie it.

So does anyone else have pictures of your babies in their carriers? I have a few of Jack in his moby from a few months ago...I will have to go find them. I am sure they are buried in the depths of my computer somewhere...lol
Nicole...what kind of interests does your hubby have? you can make a meitai out of anything. Matt says he wants me to make one out of black material with orange straps and orange flames on the pack part...then he says he will wear Jack and Emma more...lol. Paul likes wearing the wrap and the meitai...but I guess he is weird.
Donna.....sorry it took so long for me to get to your meitai...I have been so unorganized these last few months that it was driving me crazy, but now I finally have everything of ours in one house and not spread out here and there...so I just found the material for your meitai and wanted to make sure you still want one before I sew it up...so do you still want the same kind of material I did mine with (THIS) or do you want something else? If something else then what color?

Christina, Levi gets fussy when I put him in the hug hold too...because he knows he is going to fall asleep. LOL I snuggle him in and give him his bink and he's out in just a minute or two, every single time. It's great to put him in after he has shots too because it keeps Hannah from mauling him.

Oooohhhh Sarah- yes, measurements please... I think I can make one for $10- that's money I'm willing to experiment with...
So...Do I need one layer or should I sew it so that there are two layers sewn together? Has anyone else made one or just bought them? Do they get hot? It is very hot here now and I don't want to make her too uncomfortable...

I forgot to get it out of the van while he was here for lunch...so I will get it later tonight.
If I were sewing one myself I would do one layer because it can get hot.
I would also guess that a sheet would make a great material for it because of it's strength and lightness. great use for flat sheets if you don't really use them for much else

yeah that sounds about right...about 15 feet.
fabric comes in different widths, so you may want to measure if it looks really wide. You may get more then two out of it.

I'm short and small-ish, so what do you think if I got 5 feet and cut in in half (assuming 45")- would I just turn all the edges and sew around? I'm also quite short waisted- should I go a little shorter?

If you get jersey knit, you don't have to sew it because it won't fray, but if you wanted it to look neater, you could sew it. But, I'm thinking the weight of the baby might make your thread break? Maybe? You could try it at 20 inches, and if it's too tall for your waist, you could probably shorten it.

yeah I would say if you can't surge the edges then just don't sew them at all...the thread will break. All the material will do is roll in a little bit on the edges.
I think you could get away with a shorter one Jennifer...I am significantly larger then you and I still have to wrap the 5 yds around me a ton. I think the directions call for wrapping it four times around you total?...anyway like I said above I don't do that. If you really want to know how long you personally will need though, take a long ribbon and wrap it loosely around yourself like you would the wrap...then add on the length to tie and a little length to put baby in there. then mark the ribbon and measure how much you will need. Remember, you can always cut some off, but you can't always sew it back on as easily, so think longer then you think you need and cut it down after you get it done.

Sarah-even if it had a picture of hubby's favourite car on it, he wouldn't wear one!! To put it how he would say "any man who wears that is "soft". except he would use another word for soft that I am sure will not be allowed on here 
My mother has said she will buy us the ergo as a present. I did look and they say from 3-4 mths you don't need the insert but it depends on baby. I could always not get the insert and then see when it comes Christmas time whether baby will need it or not.

Yea, Micah said he will wear a Mei Tei if I make it in digital cami print, he doesn't like my girly green and blue one.
Jen, you can definitly get away with less then 5 yards, I bought about 3.5-4 and mine fits just fine. I'm built about normal, around a size 6-8.

jennifer...t-shirt material will be fine just cut. It will roll a bit on the edges so add to your size to allow for that.

. I think it's the only backpack type in existence that is not hard on the baby's back. I think the infant insert still needs to be used to 4 months old, but you may want to check on the website. I think the purpose of the insert is to be easy on the baby's back unlike a Bjorn or Snugli. Without the insert all the weight is put on the baby's crotch. 
I wanted to give my cousin directions with her sling, but instead I had to say I would email her
