I've got a question - is the moby wrap warm? It seems to me like all that fabric wrapped around you would be warm!

the fabric isn't so much of a problem as the baby warmth for me. I mostly don't wear the moby now though...I use the meitai and it's a lot cooler because the straps are not as thick. I still love the moby though!!!! I think Jack is at an in between stage with it though...maybe when he is a little bigger I can go back to it and put him on my back instead.

While browsing at the goodwill store today I found a really pretty piece of fabric that I'm pretty sure I can turn into a wrap without too much trouble when the time comes. I'm not sure exactly what kind of fabric it is, but it has a good stretch- felt like what I found wandering around JoAnn's. Maybe cotton gauze or jersey, and definitely strong but lightweight enough for this heat. It is a bit more than half as long as I want, but twice as wide, so I'm thinking I can cut it in half lengthwise and get my aunt to help me sew the ends together, a la Maggie's sling. I realize that it will have to be a very strong and probably overlapping seam b/c it will have to bear weight, but my aunt is really good at sewing and I'm sure we can figure something out. And the best part is...the length of fabric was only $2.99!!

I'm not exactly sure (no label or tag), its just a swatch. I can tell you about the fabric though- maybe you can tell me what it could be. It feels like what I found at JoAnns when I went looking for cotton gauzes and/or jerseys, and my hands tell me that it should work.
There aren't any hems at the edges (all 4 are raw) and I see no fraying. It has a decent but not huge amount of stretch in each direction, more vertical (pulling the stripes apart) than horizontal (pulling the stripes longer). It has a wrong side, but its not very obvious. It is fairly soft, but feels like it has a bit of grip to it. It is fairly lightweight (important for here), and breathable (I held it over my mouth to check), but it feels strong (I pulled as hard as I could and felt it pulling back). The edges roll a bit when I stretch it. The fabric seems to be woven, not ribbed like a t-shirt.
Here is a picture of it. I don't know if that will help, but its so pretty I wanted to share. It is folded in half width-wise and some of the width is hanging off of the counter.
Now for the technical questions- is my plan of cutting it in half and sewing them together feasible so long as I make sure its a good strong seam? I've already checked and I can match up the striped pattern with 2 halves.

ahhh....now your picture has a bit of a sheen which suggests a poly blend...the edges look like poly too. that's cool!!!!
in sewing them together this is what I would do...put the two pieces wrong sides together...hold it up letting the length fall. On that side (which would be the middle when it's done) fold down one inch. Then fold down another inch. You could even do three (I probably would). Lay it out on the floor or table...then unfold the top side and pull it out to the length of the wrap keeping the folds in the middle. Pin the folds. Sew down along both sides of the fold in a zigzag pattern...maybe sew down each side twice. The zig zag stitch is important because it will stretch with the material unlike a straight stitch. If your machine is very fancy you may be able to choose another type of stretch stitch besides just the plain zig zag. Mine is a quilting machine so I have all sorts of fancy stitches. One that I love looks like a vine with leaves!!!!

I'm having a hard time picturing it (I have no sewing ability). I tried it with 2 sheets of paper. When I folded the ends over 3x and then unfolded it and laid it out, I have 3 creases in my paper/fabric. I'm assuming the creases are how I line up the fabric with itself and keep it even, and then sew on either side of all 3 creases? That would make 4 lines of stitching if I do each once, right?

ok...let's try again step by step...
1. put the two pieces right sides together...lay it down (I have used two different colors so you can tell where each one is)

2. fold down one inch..........Then fold down another inch......... You could even do three (I probably would).

3. unfold the top side and pull it out to the length of the wrap keeping the folds in the middle.

4. Pin the folds.

5. Sew down one side where the materials meet, on the side where the folded material is
(on my material this first sewing line would be on the green right next to where it meets the pink)

6. Flip it over and sew the other seem where the materials meet on that side. (on mine this one would be sewn on the pink right next to where it meets the green)

if you sew it like that it does two things...one it strengthens the seam (because you have several layers of each side of the material together)...and two it makes the seam look nice and finished (no raw edges) from both sides.

lol...yeah my mom was a seamstress...had her own business for many years, then when she lost her love of sewing she prayed that God would return it to her and she told God she wouldn't charge people anymore if He gave her love of it back...and He did. So for many many years after that she did things for others for free. She still does that...when she has a chance to.
I started sewing when I was barely able to get to the machine. My favorite things are making patterns and quilting. For a while I even had a quilting business, but it was taking up too much of my homeschooling time so I quit. I still like to do it though.

That was a really good tutorial- the pictures do help. Just one more question...doesn't "put wrong sides of the fabric together" mean put the 2 faded (wrong) sides inwards so that they're touching? Your pictures show what I would have thought of as the "right" (printed) sides inwards so they're touching. That does make more sense because then the little bump from the folding over is on the inside of the wrap.

Thanks!! I was wondering if it was just my utter lack of sewing skills. What would you think would work best for the width measurement of a wrap? I want the stripes to match up when I'm finished, and 1 rotation through the pattern is a bit more than 25" wide. Is that wide enough?

I don't know if this count as babywearing, as I don't use a wrap. But lately I've been carrying Nathan around in a soft carrier (no metal bracing) that I purchased on sale at Target.

He hated being carried in a sling as an infant, he didn't like being tucked in towards me (for head support) and wanted to look out onto the world. I was a little puzzled, as I thought babies were supposed to love it. But now that he's 3.5 months and has great head control, we go for walks together and he faces out and has a grand ol time. Often he falls asleep on the return trip home!

Really, being carried like that will sooth him when nothing else works, and I get an extra workout.

Same with Reagan. She was just always like that though, not just when in a carrier or sling. She would not ever lay down (except to nurse), and didn't want to be cuddled or held close. She always wanted to look out. I'm hoping this next baby will be content to snuggle in a sling close to me. However, I'm not buying a carrier until he/she is born and I figure out what they like. There is a crunchy mom shop less than an hour from my house that lets you try on wraps & mei teis & tons of other types of carriers. I'll go there with the baby and figure out what to buy.

I found it! THIShttp://www.taylormadeslings.com/instructions.html link is really great for showing different ring sling positions and how to get into them and it is in pictures instead of slow downloads...

had to buy myself a new mobywrap. I left the other one at my mom's house...which isn't a big deal, except she can't find it! So I just got a new one. I figure if the other one turns up, then I'll have an extra for when one is in the wash.

Speaking of that, how often do you all wash your wraps?

Levi is getting awful heavy lately and my tummy troubles are not helping. Since he can sit up now, I'm going to bring my cart cover next week to Walmart and see if he can sit up the whole time. If he falls asleep, I can just lay him down in that. I am a little sad though...

When it's smelly or has spots from spit up and drool all over it...LOL Actually, it's only about once a week or so.

Ok, well I need help...

I'd like a sling, or wrap or something, but I don't know what I need/want!

I would like to have something to bring the baby to church gatherings or weddings or whatever so that we're not carrying the car seat around, but not just carrying the baby around, but I don't even know where to start.

I would love to make one, but I have absolutely no sewing skills...

I just bought THIS WRAP the other day. I tried it on and figured it out right away. It seems really comfy and nice....I hope it works ok with a baby!

Amber, that looks just like the Moby. Give it a couple times to tie it just right for how loose/tight you want the baby in there and you'll be fine.

Yolanda, I vote for the Moby. I may be biased.

You could do both, Nicole.

I have my Mei Tei and the fabric for a Moby, I just need to hem the ends and then it's ready to go.

I can't believe the prices for a Moby, it amazes me that they can charge $40 for 4-5 yards of fabric
