Sounds like a camp song to this Boy Scout.

A Scout is TRUSTWORTHY, Loyal, Brave, Kind, oh, I forget a bunch, Thrifty, Clean and Reverent.

Where is the shirt? Can I have the patch???

I think they dropped the 'boy' in the 'boy scouts' so that girls could join. She could join if she lived here...

Big Bee!

This is the long answer, short one to follow.

Nah. In BSA - girls over 14 can join Venturing, which has crews that can be co-ed, or single gender. A crew focuses on a goal or program rather than badges and rank. So, you could have a crew that only does high-adventure or is interested in health care careers. In fact, our old 'boss' used to promote it for a church youth group. It would get you covered by insurance, provide support and ideas and trained leaders that have had background checks. BSA allows woman to be leaders (Cubmaster/Scoutmaster) as long as Youth Protection* is followed. Co-ed Crews have to have co-ed leaders.

Overseas the programs vary. And, yes, some places have a co-ed program that is under the World Order of Scouting, Boy Scouts of America is part of that.

Girl Scouts USA is different - there is no co-ed program and they are part of WAGGGS. The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. GSUSA does not allow men to be 'leaders' but they can be assistant leaders, as long as the 'guide to safe scouting*' is followed.

Some countries are WOS, some are WAGGGS and some are both.

I am a registered leader in both GSUSA and BSA. BigBee is part of a Boy Scout Troop and a Venturing Crew that supports the camp / staff. DeeDee is a Girl Scout and would like me to form a Venturing Crew when she is 14. She wants it to either focus on camping or 'fun'.

* Youth Protection & Guide to Safe Scouting both define 'acceptable' sleeping arrangments. Basically - SEPERATE!. Separate men from woman (unless they are married) Boys from Girls and this included the bathroom. BSA even divides by age, which means that Poppa and BigBee have two different showers. Either facilities or by setting times.

I know that is more that most folks want to hear, but I feel that it is important to give full info. So many times, people have mis-conceptions. I can also explain Religion in Scouting and answer the 'Girl Scout - Planned Parenthood question'.

Short comment? I am a Girl Scout Assistent leader. A Cub Scout Committee Chair. A Boy Scout Committee Chair and Wife of Scoutmaster. A District funddrive presentor. Staff member for both. My son is on Boy Scout Camp staff.

Yes, I camp with the boys. I don't even share a tent with BigBee and don't sit alone with a camper. 2-deep leadership at all times. Poppa goes to Girl Scout functions, but if he were to sleep over, he'd do it in the van and we'd have a sign on the bathroom that he could flip when he went in.

Wow! Thanks for sharing all that, MBee! That was very informative and good for them for being so strict. I wonder if all troops follow the rules. I bet they don't. :(

I know of times that rules get 'bent' but it is in very specific cases (that I have heard) Technically, when BigBee was the only camper from his troop, I was supposed to maintain 2-deep leadership at all times. But I knew his mom wouldn't sue me :)

It boils down to knowing that if you bend rules and something goes wrong, you have NO support.

I remember having a discussion about how to keep kids from sneaking off as a couple and it boiled down to bringing enough adults that the one who stays up all night and watches them can sleep all day. I'll take the night shift - give me a book, a lamp and bug spray and I'll be fine.

And, it is about teaching responsiblity. It is the TRUSTWORTHY and Obiedent words in the Boy Scout Law. (in girl scouts it is HONEST and Respects Authority)

edited because contractions are important...

So in other words there are many reasons why a boy would much rather be a boy scout instead then.

Um, not, not, not, sure, sure, sure.

I didn't really look at it too long. I kinda flipped through it trying to decide if there was a reason to keep it and then sent it soaring through the air to the big box of soon to be shredded and bailed "stuff".

Trish, I am doing fine. I am going to order some clothes today online, going to wash some clothes in the basement (washer & dryer is there), go the grocery store, wash some dishes and straighten things up a little around here.

I am being naughty today and "skipping" church. It's SS Rally Day and I have so much to do. I begin a bible study on Wednesday though.

Well, it's ok to skip church every now and again.

Do you know the topic of your bible study?

Poor Ben didn't know what he started.

I like KISMIF - Keep it simple, make it fun. A good guideline for all things with kids, not just scouts

edited to remove the Pennsylvania-ism that caused a typo. - which reminded me - did you I type Winders instead of windows?

Trish the study is a small group... Companions in Christ, The way of Transforming Discipleship.

I am really looking forward to it.
