Thank you for the tips!

By the way welcome to the bicycling thread.........how is your father?

Thanks! Hopefully, I'll be able to contribute...Dad's getting a more thorough evaluation from his cancer doctor. We're awating the results but are comforted by this doctor's calmness and knowledge. And we're trusting more and more in God, a huge blessing from this entire experience. Thanks for asking! (You know you can PM me if you ever want or need to ramble/release/vent!)

Strangely enough, yes. Nice to know, and nice to have, after 50 miles or so.

BTW -- the Firecracker 100 is a 100 km ride -- around 63 miles -- wherein the last 13 miles can feel longer than the first 50!

Well I'm off to my Montana ride. I leave tomorrow morning (3am!!!!) to drive up to Idaho. Next day we drive over to Yellowstone for a ride. Friday we travel to Glacier Nationak Park and Saturday ride the Going To The Sun Road. Back in the car and drive to Whitefish Montana to check in for the event ride. We start in Whitefish and ride through such towns as Hot Springs, Troy, Libby and Eureka (I have no idea where any of these towns are other than NW Montana!!!) and then back to Whitefish. 6 days of riding and 458 miles (daily mileage is 80, 49, 100, 95, 75 and 59).

Wish me luck. I plan on taking alot of photo opps, especially on those long days!!!! I also plan on carrying some Chamois Butter with me - I think I'm going to need it!!!

Sometimes, the dragon wins

I faced my annual dragon, the Firecracker 100, newly attired from head to foot. Father's Day had brought a cycling cap into my wardrobe, to replace the raffish bandanna previously worn under helmet. A more dramatic break from tradition, Shimano cleats, adorned the once-smooth soles of my seven year old Shimano shoes. I was finally going "clipless."

I thought Trey at Opsware was exaggerating when he asserted that this mod would add 2 mph to my average speed. He wasn't.

Again, in an effort to beat the heat and the crowds, I started riding 23 minutes ahead of schedule. One hour and 13 miles later, several hundred sleek Spandexed forms slipstreamed past with the ritual cry of "on your left!"

The day began cool, in the low 70s. The fragrance of Mimosa vied with the rarer scent of crepe myrtle along the ride. I passed nobody -- the one drawback to starting early -- but did move ahead in the pack by shortening my rest stops -- just so they could pass me again. The clipless pedals increased the smoothness and efficiency of my power transfer, and my average mph kept going up, reaching a high of 14.5. And staying there until mile 51, when my kevlar-shielded rear inner tube exploded for cantankerous reasons of its own. The spare inner tube had a hole in it, noon o'clock had arrived, and I thought it was a good time to call it a day, and catch a ride on the sag wagon. The dragon won this time.

That may have been a very wise move. My training this year focused more on interval workouts, with fewer long rides. Maintaining my all-time best pace in the face of a persistent headwind, fueled by adrenalin and endorphines, took more out of me than I'd realized.

But, wait 'til next year!

Back from my trip. First of all I thoroughly enjoyed my Yellowstone ride and doing Glacier National Park although I sepnt so little time in either place. Someday I want to go back and do both for a week. FYI if anyone is ever interested in doing the Going to the Sun Rd do it East to West. Much less traffic, less climbing, more scenic.

I did not enjoy Montana much. First of all it was very hot - not good for riding. The ride started Sunday and ended Friday and the temp went from 101 to 108. I was a rag the whole time!!! I also did not enjoy the traffic on some of the roads we took. Very heavy, very fast, and no shoulders to ride on. Scenary was just Ok, some highlights, but mostly just trees and water. Oh well lesson learned.

I had to pray to God a few times to hold my temper in check. Some of the ladies I went up with were hard to tolerate, even one that claimed to be christian. We were camping on school grounds where no liquor was allowed and each night she would sneak in wine and pass it around. Oh well I guess rules are for other people.

Anyway glad to be back home. I really live in a beautiful place. Weather here is fairly nice, at least a respite from the ot weather up north.

Just got back and I am off to St. Paul MN on Wed. for business. Hopefully will get to ride again this weekend. This week I am taking off.

FYI distance for the week was:

Sunday - 85
Monday - 44
Tuesday - 93
Wed. - rest day (or optional 92 mile ride - I rested)
Thursday - 73
Friday - 56 (I choose not to ride Friday - just done with all the heat)

Sorry to hear your ride didn't go as expected Pam. We are having triple digit temps here so I have cut my riding way back. I had a story to relate that pertains to critter encounters that were being discussed a while back. My husband rode home from work the other day after dark and told me that when he rode under the bridge that the bike path runs under hundreds of BATS came to life and were flying in every direction. He said none of them hit him but it still FREAKED me out! No more underpasses for me even close to dark!

Funny you say that... one of my favorite evening rides takes me under BAT BRIDGE at Newport's Back Bay. I love having the critter comes out and swirl around me while I'm riding through.

Each month I participate in a "bat count" with a naturalist for the County of Orange. A healthy bat popular is important t keep down pests like mosquitos. I love watching them come out. I've had a few near misses as they buzz and fly by my head, but they have never hit me.

Bats are truly cool critters!

Pam one of my favorite memories with our boys when we moved to our current home 4 years ago was going out after dark with our flaslight, shining it on a big fat moth and waiting for a bat to swoop in and grab it. Great fun! We have three small lakes on the property where our townhome is and there are lots of bats out here in the summer. And I definitely appreciate their purpose in the ecosystem but I don't want them swarming about me by the hundreds while I am on the bike in the dark! Thank you God for echolocation!

edited to add: Something creepier than bats... while hiking in Glacier National Park I ran across some plants totally covered with tent worms/moths larvae. We don't have those in So Cal so I was fascinated. I get back to the car and lo and behold find out I am covered in the worms, they are in my hair, on my back, everywhere. Apparently they hang from a thread and wait for someone or something to travel by. Uuuuuuuuuugghhhhhhhhhhh! I still shiver thinking about it!!!

I did a bat count once with an ex-boyfriend but we were at a cave.....counting the bats as they flew out at night. It was a very fun night.....good memories.

How is everyones riding coming? My training is going ok.....I am getting out and riding at least three times a week.......I need to get back to everyday but life is just so busy at the moment.......

Has anyone been watching the tour?

My training sort of peaked before Montana and now I am slacking off. The hot weather and work is keeping me indoors. I promise, starting this weekend I will start to get out again and do some weekday rides.

Just started a job at a site 5.3 miles from home. Waterless hand cleaner can get one smelling sweet at the end of a ride, if your workplace lacks a shower. Five changes of clothing don't take up that much room. It helps to have a pair of shoes you can leave at work. On a very good day, I can average 16.2 mph over the course of 12 miles -- not anything to brag about, unless you're one of the "over 50, overweight" cycling fanatics.

I have been managing to get some riding in despite the heat. I am still biking to work almost every day but I take the short route that is 2.5 miles one way. So most days I get at least 5 miles in and some days more. Today I biked 15. I had a week of jury duty last week and had to drive every day. It was in a very high traffic area of town and made me so glad that I don't have to drive to work every day! So on Tuesday I was back at my job and thrilled to be biking again. How is everyone else doing?

I have been awfully lazy. I've been riding on the weekends but short easy rides, nothing significant. Still having trouble getting on a bike (or doing anything productive) during the week. I see the doctor next week and will ask him about my "sluggishness". I think I've gained 5lbs or so from doing nothing. Not good!

Whenever there are prolonged periods of high temps I get sluggish. I know there are people who get depressed during the last days of Winter but I think I experience that in the last days of Summer. I am just tired of feeling hot! Also the heat really does suck the energy right out of me. I have been squeezing in rides here and there whenever I can but I look forward to a time when I can comfortably ride 20-25 miles again.

I am longing for Fall with its cool temperatures. I so hate summer!!! Unlike some folks I tend to gain weight in the summer and lose in the winter.

We are having alittle heat wave right now and it's been hard to go outside but I have to start forcing myself. Tonight, I promise, at least a 10 miler around the neighborhood!!!

Good for you Pam! I am glad we are not getting the heat and humidity that much of the US is experiencing right now. In fact the last two days were in the high 80's and low 90's. Very tolerable. I have been riding at least 10 miles a day so I am at least maintaining my skills so I can pick it up when it cools down. I love, love, love the smell of the river that the bike path runs next to, especially at dusk.

Well I have been riding and so glad about it. It's amazing once on the bike I feel really good. Last night rode down to the beach. I knew the temperature down there would be nicer. In fact, I got cold (yeah!). Did 19 miles. Had to fight a head wind out but coming back I was flying. The night before I did 12 miles but some climbing up into the hills. Tonight I hope to get out on the mountain bike and do an easy ride around one of the parks.

OK it's a start. Just gotta keep at it!

Hey Ruthie.......welcome to the thread.........I have not done any mountaineering or rock climbing yet.......the closet I have come is reading books/watching movies (documentaries) on climbs......though not in the physical shape to do it myself nor do I think I have the right mindset .....I am drawn to people who push themselves mind, body and soul to the extreme.........I read stories of attempts at Everest or K2 which ended in a tragic outcome and wonder if I would be able to overcome such conditions and what is it about some people that they will push the limits.......

I backpack and have gone up pass tree line many times just not to the top.....

I look forward to hearing tale of some of your adventures.........

Have you ever thought you could not make it? if so what drove you on?

Has anyone else been doing much riding?
