Yes, I think the mechanism itself is worn, too. I certainly don't have the skills for that. Plus, I'm very much not a "girly girl" but I distinctly distaste having dirty hands, and am quite adverse to breaking a nail. Just the thought makes me queasy. No -- I hadn't really considered actually cutting my nails as an option. Basball & Gary - This sounds like a hand-in-a-mit fit.

And while you're here, maybe you can help me w/my windows. They're the kind that crank out to a 90 degree angle from the house. Two of the windows' cranks don't work. Thus, I can't open the windows. Of course, if I could get them open, it would be mighty hard to shut them. Do the cranks slip on the post (that is, the crank turns but the windows don't open) or is teh crank just very hard to turn? If the cranks are hard to turn, open the window (pushing on the outer edge while turing the crank should help some and then clean the gears. You may need to open the mechanism box a bit. Clean and then grease the gears. quote:

While the dishwasher was not running (that is, it filled with water and then sat there) was the motor making any sound at all? A hum or a click or something? dishwasher filled w/ water, sometimes you can hear a bit of a hum, as if something is trying to work / sometimes can't hear anything. no clicking sounds, unless you turn the dial because it hasn't started & you just hear the cycles click. last time it started to smelled hot, so i unpluged it and let it sit for a while - then when i tried again, it worked, no problem! it's running right now, started right up when i first turned it on but when it first started it sounded a bit slow then sounded normal. something sticking? do you have to clean out a dishwasher motor? or maybe it's just tired out... and i can't look at the dial switch unless i take apart the whole door. and i can't find the owners manual.... mm, where did those goblins put it?

I'd guess that the starting capacitor on the motor is going bad. This is a service call item as you can't do it yourself. May even be a "replace the motor" item. Seems that the switch is doing what it is supposed to do. You can test it by setting it for a two hour delay and see if it moves.

Hey honies....I need to know something. If I bring my car to my favorite mechanic and he works on it all morning long and then realizes the problem is more than he can really fix and tells me I probably need to take it to a dealer and then does not charge me for any of the time he took to try and fix my car...do I just smile and say thank you or should I insist on paying him something for his time?

Veronica - you offered, he refused. Leave it at that. However, if you DO want to do something for him - send him a nice hand-written thank you note telling him how much you appreciate what he did for you, and that you will be referring him to all your friends, and will be back when you are in need of his services again. Believe me, that note will speak volumes to him and mean so much more than money!

And the referrals will bring him more money than you could ever pay. Look at his time on your car as advertising expense. He seems to be a good mechanic. Give him all the business you can. these guys are hard to find.

Veronica, you must use my mechanic. One time he didn't charge me as much as the part he installed cost. Great guy. Thankfully, he's about my age, so hopefully he'll be around a while. John, I'm glad to hear your wrist is almost healed. At the very least the cast is an inconvenience and at it's worst - well...I'll just let that be. Good news!! I think I got the door fixed. At least it's better. Both the upper and lower part of the door is now on the tracks and has been all evening as I went to and fro. A can of WD40 did the trick. Yes, it actually took quite a lot of WD40 before the door slid easily. And then a tweak or two with the screw driver and I was done. Thank you for the instructions and vote of confidence. As for the windows: quote:
Do the cranks slip on the post (that is, the crank turns but the windows don't open) or is the crank just very hard to turn? The cranks slip. quote:

electricity. Most newer automobiles are so computerized that the average do it yourselfer can't work on them anymore. With the electrical courses you can at least do stuff around the house. I thought electricity too because I also have some electrical problems, and they're petty so I can't get anyone to come over to work on them. And my male friends all have their own to-do lists. The reason I would consider auto mechanics is because if my friend the auto mechanic would move or stop working for some reason, I would at least be able to identify parts and have some basic understanding of what the new mechanic is telling me. Right now, I just call and say, “It's broke.”, and he calls me back and says, “It's fixed.” I don't trust anyone else as much as him. And neither do many of the men in my acquaintance.

I posted in the ABC thread all my car woes ... the second time I went to Nu Mecanic this week, I mentioned that I had recommended them on the message boards of the local gasbuddy site. He really appreciated the free referrals! (Alas, NuMechanic is also married! Although his morals are such that I do hope he's a believer!)

Could you do the laundry, vaccuume, sweep & mop, wash the car, drive the kids to and from school, and their sports activities, and of course make dinner? O and read me a story, & sing me a lullabye? How is that for a honey-do list? I nominate John! (He's oh SO accommodating!) Of course he seems to be among the missing right now ... ETA: P.S. Hope you're feeling better soon!

Well, John seems to be a wee bit busy at work right now, but I'm sure he'll make his presence felt here at some time during the day.
