Will the polls closed in South Carolina, Sen. John McCain and former Gov. Mike Huckabee are locked in tight battle for first place in the state's GOP primary, with former Gov. Mitt Romney and former Sen. Fred Thompson battling it out for third.
As the polls closed, news reports emerged that longshot Republican presidential candidate California Rep. Duncan Hunter, after a disappointing finish in the Nevada caucuses, and not expected to place well in S.C., has decided to drop out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, according to campaign manager Roy Tyler.
Reports of bad weather and voting problems plagued the Palmetto State contest -- a crucial first Southern primary that could winnow and clarify the jumbled field of Republican presidential candidates.

That's the message many liberal watchdog groups hope will resonate with churches during this election season.
In fact, in Iowa a few weeks ago, pastors who were supporting former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's presidential bid received two ominous warning letters asserting that their involvement in the state primary could jeopardize the tax-exempt status of their churches.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent is dead in California after being struck by one of two vehicles fleeing toward the U.S.-Mexico border during a pursuit by law enforcement today.
The officer, whose name has not yet been released, was laying spike strips across the road in the Imperial Sand Dunes recreation in the southeast portion of the state at about 9:30 a.m. when he was hit by a Hummer believed to have been driven by smugglers.
The Hummer and a Black Ford F-150 pickup truck escaped into Mexico, Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Jeremy Schappell told the Yuma Sun. It is unknown whether the vehicles were carrying drugs or human contraband.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who says he's not running for president, chose delegate-rich California Saturday from which to deliver a scorching assessment of Washington for failing to keep up with the need for new airports, roads, water systems and bridges across America.
While China and other nations are investing heavily in ports and high- speed trains "Washington doesn't have a plan" to address crumbling U.S. infrastructure, Bloomberg said.
In remarks clearly aimed at a national audience, the mayor said politics trumps common sense in Congress, where pork-barrel spending takes priority.

John McCain took the early lead in the South Carolina primary Saturday, and never lost it.
With 82 percent of precincts reporting, McCain had 33 percent and Huckabee, 29 percent. Fred Thompson had 16 percent, Mitt Romney had 15 percent. Ron Paul was polling at 4 percent and Rudy Giuliani at 2 percent. Duncan Hunter, fairing poorly in both Nevada and South Carolina on Saturday, was returning to San Diego and planned to drop out, FOX News learned.
A win for McCain could be a big boost going into the Florida primary Jan. 29 and Super Tuesday Feb. 5, when 24 states hold a variety of primaries and caucuses for both parties. There has been no breakaway frontrunner in the GOP race — Huckabee won the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, while McCain won the Jan. 8 New Hampshire primary. Romney won lower profile contests in Wyoming, Michigan and Nevada, but leads the delegate count.

At about 9:10 Eastern time on Saturday night on MSNBC, NBC's Tim Russert was discussing the Democratic race and the Nevada caucuses, and suggested that Bill Clinton could be seen as racially divisive, trying to drive apart blacks and whites, as signified by his 1992 campaign speech denouncing rapper Sister Souljah. It was famous enough that they started calling it a "Sister Souljah moment" when you spoke out against your own base.
It's tough to come to Bill Clinton's defense, but a little context was missing. If Clinton was seen as divisive by the Jesse Jacksons of the world (let's grant that), what on Earth was Sister Souljah? What was said? She said this in The Washington Post: "If black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?" Clinton picked up on that and shot back days later: "If you took the words ‘white’ and ‘black’ and you reversed them, you might think David Duke was giving that speech."
In everything that has followed, political writers have been more offensive than Clinton. For example, in 2000, when John McCain attacked Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell as "agents of intolerance," he was hailed for a Sister Souljah moment. Was it fair to smear these ministers into being just as offensive as the "Let's have a week to kill whites" rapper?

January 20, 2008 -- The curse of South Carolina is lifted. John McCain has won the state that rejected him in 2000, sending him spiraling into a period of estrangement from the GOP that made it appear impossible he would ever again have a chance at winning the Republican presidential nomination.
But now the Arizona maverick is victorious in his Southern bete noire and looking strong in the fractured GOP field. McCain ran to the right in South Carolina, emphasizing his national security credentials and fiscal conservatism and even occasionally talking about his pro-life record in the senate.
He won over some of the state's political establishment, in contrast to the almost uniform opposition to him eight years ago.

People that watch HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" are infinitely aware that the host is not only an atheist, but is also an antitheist, meaning that he hates religion.
No finer example of Maher's disdain for theism and Judeo-Christian principles occurred on Friday's installment of "Real Time" when he actually declared, "At least half of the [Ten] Commandments are stupid!"
This came moments after Maher proudly stated, "If I had a child, the last book I would ever give to teach morality would be the Bible, especially the Old Testament." This led one of his guests to say that Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani, and John McCain should be stoned for committing adultery.

A cheer erupted, accompanied by wild applause muffled by mittens. But the sounds were replaced by a groan when Brett Favre — the 38-year-old beloved hero of so many Packers victories, trying for one last chance to lead the team to the Super Bowl — was intercepted by Corey Webster.

After a brief discussion of the nation's economic woes, the debate devolved into an angry exchange between the two senators, with Clinton noting Obama had taken campaign contributions from a political patron facing fraud charges and Obama calling Clinton a "corporate lawyer sitting on the board of Wal-Mart."
As Obama tried to defend his comments about Republicans and Ronald Reagan, Clinton interrupted and said she has never criticized his remarks on Reagan.

Britain's benchmark FTSE-100 slumped 5.5 percent to 5,578.20, France's CAC-40 Index tumbled 6.8 percent to 4,744.15, and Germany's blue-chip DAX 30 plunged 7.2 percent to 6,790.19.

Retired Air Force officer "Buzz" Patterson believes it is the atheists, agnostics, and Wiccans who have too many rights in the military, and who are preventing Christians from freely practicing their faith.
OneNewsNow has reported that an organization called the Military Religious Freedom Foundation is party to a lawsuit claiming Defense Secretary Robert Gates permits a military culture in which soldiers are pressured by their superiors to adopt and espouse Christian beliefs -- and that officers sanction activities by Christian organizations.
But Lt. Col. Robert "Buzz" Patterson (USAF-Ret.) says it is the non-Christians who are forcing their beliefs on Christian members of the military. "I would say that the atheists and the agnostics and the Wiccans have too much say in what happens in today's military. So I think they've got the cart before the horse," he argues.

As success with the military surge in Iraq increasingly belies their claim that the war is already irretrievably lost, liberals have changed the subject from Iraq to the economy and the rising possibility of a recession. Liberal Republicans and Democrats, as usual, prescribe Federal deficit spending and higher taxes on “the rich.”
That is the doctrine of Keynesian economics, which advocates consumer spending as the exclusive highway to full employment and prosperity. According to Keynes, consumer and business savings must be offset by massively increased Federal spending. What the money is spent for doesn’t matter; just flood the market with money created by bookkeeping entries at the Federal Reserve banks.

Mike Huckabee tried his best to expand beyond his evangelical base in South Carolina and appeal to what his campaign called "Joe Six Pack" voters. Mr. Huckabee was the only candidate to pander to devotees of the Confederate flag, telling crowds that outsiders should leave the banner flag, now displayed in a corner of the grounds of the state capitol, alone: "If somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we'd tell 'em what to do with the pole, that's what we'd do." Contrast that with the comments of Mr. Huckabee's fellow Southerner Fred Thompson: "For a great many Americans, [the flag] is a symbol of racism. I'm glad people have made a decision not to display it . . . in a state capitol."
Mr. Huckabee also tried pandering to immigration foes. As governor he had opposed measures targeting illegal aliens. Just before the primary, he signed a pledge that he would use law enforcement to send all 12 million illegal aliens home. He vehemently denied any inconsistency in his views. It didn't work. Among the one-fourth of voters for whom illegal immigration was a top issue, Mr. Huckabee defeated John McCain by only 33% to 24%--a sign that many voters recognize the issue's complexities and view it in context once they get inside the voting booth.
