McCain, Huckabee Battle for First in S.C. Primary
McCain, Huckabee Locked In Dead Heat; S.C. Primary Could Crush Thompson's Candidacy

By JENNIFER PARKER
Jan. 19, 2008

Will the polls closed in South Carolina, Sen. John McCain and former Gov. Mike Huckabee are locked in tight battle for first place in the state's GOP primary, with former Gov. Mitt Romney and former Sen. Fred Thompson battling it out for third.

As the polls closed, news reports emerged that longshot Republican presidential candidate California Rep. Duncan Hunter, after a disappointing finish in the Nevada caucuses, and not expected to place well in S.C., has decided to drop out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, according to campaign manager Roy Tyler.

Reports of bad weather and voting problems plagued the Palmetto State contest -- a crucial first Southern primary that could winnow and clarify the jumbled field of Republican presidential candidates.

When it comes to politics, pastors and churches should just shut up.

That's the message many liberal watchdog groups hope will resonate with churches during this election season.

In fact, in Iowa a few weeks ago, pastors who were supporting former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's presidential bid received two ominous warning letters asserting that their involvement in the state primary could jeopardize the tax-exempt status of their churches.

A broadly conservative and majority evangelical electorate is turning out in the Republican primary in South Carolina, with values and the economy on their minds.

Preliminary exit poll results indicate that nearly seven in 10 Republican voters in the state are identifying themselves as conservatives, which is more than in the 2000 primary there, as well as more than in either Michigan or New Hampshire this year. And nearly six in 10 in South Carolina are evangelical Christians.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent is dead in California after being struck by one of two vehicles fleeing toward the U.S.-Mexico border during a pursuit by law enforcement today.

The officer, whose name has not yet been released, was laying spike strips across the road in the Imperial Sand Dunes recreation in the southeast portion of the state at about 9:30 a.m. when he was hit by a Hummer believed to have been driven by smugglers.

The Hummer and a Black Ford F-150 pickup truck escaped into Mexico, Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Jeremy Schappell told the Yuma Sun. It is unknown whether the vehicles were carrying drugs or human contraband.

Bloomberg Has Harsh Words for Washington

By MICHAEL R. BLOOD
Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who says he's not running for president, chose delegate-rich California Saturday from which to deliver a scorching assessment of Washington for failing to keep up with the need for new airports, roads, water systems and bridges across America.

While China and other nations are investing heavily in ports and high- speed trains "Washington doesn't have a plan" to address crumbling U.S. infrastructure, Bloomberg said.

In remarks clearly aimed at a national audience, the mayor said politics trumps common sense in Congress, where pork-barrel spending takes priority.

McCain Defeats Huckabee, Rest of Pack in South Carolina Republican Primary
by FOXNews.com
Saturday, January 19, 2008

John McCain took the early lead in the South Carolina primary Saturday, and never lost it.

With 82 percent of precincts reporting, McCain had 33 percent and Huckabee, 29 percent. Fred Thompson had 16 percent, Mitt Romney had 15 percent. Ron Paul was polling at 4 percent and Rudy Giuliani at 2 percent. Duncan Hunter, fairing poorly in both Nevada and South Carolina on Saturday, was returning to San Diego and planned to drop out, FOX News learned.

A win for McCain could be a big boost going into the Florida primary Jan. 29 and Super Tuesday Feb. 5, when 24 states hold a variety of primaries and caucuses for both parties. There has been no breakaway frontrunner in the GOP race — Huckabee won the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, while McCain won the Jan. 8 New Hampshire primary. Romney won lower profile contests in Wyoming, Michigan and Nevada, but leads the delegate count.

Bizarro Goldwater?
McCain can win.

By Wynton C. Hall

Republicans have a decision to make: Do they want a Barry Goldwater–style bloodletting that sacrifices political victory on the altar of ideological purity? Or do they want to beat the eventual Democratic nominee come November, even if the candidate best able to do that is the dubiously conservative senior senator from Arizona, John McCain? Barry Goldwater, the patriarch of the modern American Right — who was so ideologically untainted that he came to be called “Mr. Conservative” — drove the Republican Party off the electoral cliff in 1964, winning only six states and 38 percent of the vote. John McCain, the perennial sandspur in the conservative sandal, may be precisely what it will take for a post-Dubya Republican to win the White House.

Obama Wins More Delegates in NV Than Hillary, Will Media Notice?

By Noel Sheppard | January 19, 2008 - 20:06 ET

With Hillary Clinton receiving the most popular votes during the Nevada caucuses Saturday, it seems a metaphysical certitude media members will crown her the victor.

However, due to apportioning rules, Barack Obama actually won more delegates.

Which will get more attention from press members in the next 24 hours?

SOME EARLY THOUGHTS (Not fixed in cement) : An interesting Sat. of politics....Obama must win SC to keep his mo going;Edwards may play king-maker or queen maker... McCain if he wins Fla. may be almost unstoppable.

I would agree w/ Chris Matthews that perhaps after McCain sleeps on it tonight he reaches out Sun. or soon to get Nancy Reagan's endorsement.

On the dem side if this racial thing rises up again & Hell-ary wins for party unity she'd almost have to ask Obama to serve.

Looking way ahead if that happened, McCain would maybe ask Condi Rice, to run as VP..as a counter-strategy vs. a woman & black on the other side's ticket.

I think Huck doesn't have many places to go; Guliani is slipping & Romney still has a chance---but if Rudy surges in Fla. it could very well go to a brokered convention...BB1

Analysis: Tax Rebates May Spur Economy ***NEW***

WASHINGTON -- With the economy's prospects growing bleaker seemingly by the day, politicians in both parties have rallied around the three Ts, the mantra that any stimulus package needs to be timely, targeted and temporary.

One might add the three Bs as well - the ability to deliver the biggest bang for the buck. In that regard, tax rebates have quickly risen to the top of a list that also includes extended unemployment benefits and a boost in food stamp payments.

All three proposals have one very big advantage for politicians worried about what the economy will look like when voters go to the polls in November. They offer the promise of getting assistance out quickly to low and moderate income people who won't delay in spending the extra cash.

The illegal immigration problem, according to the various presidential candidates, seems to have no practical solution. The illegals (mostly from Mexico) come across the border by the millions looking for work to support their families left back home.

Willing to work for less than minimum wage, they send half of their paycheck to their loved ones. Others bring their wives and children with them so they can be educated and receive medical treatment at the expense of the American taxpayer.

WASHINGTON, January 20, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The following text is a proclamation by President Bush:

On National Sanctity of Human Life Day, we recognize that each life has inherent dignity and matchless value, and we reaffirm our steadfast determination to defend the weakest and most vulnerable members of our society.

America was founded on the belief that all men are created equal and have an inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and our country remains committed to upholding that founding principle. Since taking office, I have signed legislation to help protect life at all stages, and my Administration will continue to encourage adoption, fund abstinence education and crisis pregnancy programs, and support faith-based groups. Today, as our society searches for new ways to ease human suffering, we must pursue the possibilities of science in a manner that respects the sacred gift of life and upholds our moral values.......

Why is AIDS disproportionately today a black disease? Why do black women account for one-third of all abortions?

The unfortunate lesson that blacks walked away with in 1964 was that they should start listening to politicians rather than preachers. They bought into the new American world without wisdom.

Russert Sees Bill Clinton as 'Racially Divisive,' As In 1992 Rapper Flap
Photo of Tim Graham.
By Tim Graham | January 19, 2008 - 23:20 ET

At about 9:10 Eastern time on Saturday night on MSNBC, NBC's Tim Russert was discussing the Democratic race and the Nevada caucuses, and suggested that Bill Clinton could be seen as racially divisive, trying to drive apart blacks and whites, as signified by his 1992 campaign speech denouncing rapper Sister Souljah. It was famous enough that they started calling it a "Sister Souljah moment" when you spoke out against your own base.

It's tough to come to Bill Clinton's defense, but a little context was missing. If Clinton was seen as divisive by the Jesse Jacksons of the world (let's grant that), what on Earth was Sister Souljah? What was said? She said this in The Washington Post: "If black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?" Clinton picked up on that and shot back days later: "If you took the words ‘white’ and ‘black’ and you reversed them, you might think David Duke was giving that speech."

In everything that has followed, political writers have been more offensive than Clinton. For example, in 2000, when John McCain attacked Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell as "agents of intolerance," he was hailed for a Sister Souljah moment. Was it fair to smear these ministers into being just as offensive as the "Let's have a week to kill whites" rapper?

BARRELING OUT OF CAROLINA MCCAIN OVERCOMES HIS CURSE
By RICH LOWRY

January 20, 2008 -- The curse of South Carolina is lifted. John McCain has won the state that rejected him in 2000, sending him spiraling into a period of estrangement from the GOP that made it appear impossible he would ever again have a chance at winning the Republican presidential nomination.

But now the Arizona maverick is victorious in his Southern bete noire and looking strong in the fractured GOP field. McCain ran to the right in South Carolina, emphasizing his national security credentials and fiscal conservatism and even occasionally talking about his pro-life record in the senate.

He won over some of the state's political establishment, in contrast to the almost uniform opposition to him eight years ago.

Travelers returning by sea or land will have to show 'proof of citizenship' starting Jan. 31

Get ready to present more paperwork when traveling by boat or car back into the United States from nearby countries.

Starting Jan. 31, adults and children who are U.S. citizens will be required to show "proof of citizenship," such as a birth certificate, naturalization certificate or a U.S. passport. Adults also will need to show government IDs, such as a driver's license.

But at least in South Florida, don't expect the headaches that accompanied last year's requirement that U.S. citizens show passports when returning by air from Mexico, Canada, Bermuda or Caribbean countries.

People that watch HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" are infinitely aware that the host is not only an atheist, but is also an antitheist, meaning that he hates religion.

No finer example of Maher's disdain for theism and Judeo-Christian principles occurred on Friday's installment of "Real Time" when he actually declared, "At least half of the [Ten] Commandments are stupid!"

This came moments after Maher proudly stated, "If I had a child, the last book I would ever give to teach morality would be the Bible, especially the Old Testament." This led one of his guests to say that Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani, and John McCain should be stoned for committing adultery.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Eli Manning has arrived, just in time to take his New York Giants on an improbable trip to the Super Bowl. A suddenly matured Manning guided the Giants to their 10th straight road win Sunday, a frostbitten 23-20 overtime victory over the Green Bay Packers for the NFC championship.

Now comes Mission Impossible for Manning and the Giants, who will play the unbeaten New England Patriots in two weeks for the NFL title.

After Lawrence Tynes missed a 36-yard field goal at the end of regulation following a bad snap, he got a reprieve in overtime following Corey Webster's interception of a struggling Brett Favre. He nailed a 47-yarder on his third attempt to win it, then sprinted directly to the locker room as the rest of his frozen teammates celebrated on the field.

Giants Stun Packers and Head to the Super Bowl

By JOHN BRANCH
Published: January 21, 2008

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Under a full moon, a black sky and a crisp and cruel blanket of cold, the Giants stood on the frozen sideline of Lambeau Field, waiting for a rush of warmth.

With one kick from the right foot of Lawrence Tynes, the Giants would send themselves to the Super Bowl, out of the northern prairie and to the southwestern desert. But the snap from Jay Alford was high, the hold from Jeff Feagles was down, and the kick was wide left.

A cheer erupted, accompanied by wild applause muffled by mittens. But the sounds were replaced by a groan when Brett Favre — the 38-year-old beloved hero of so many Packers victories, trying for one last chance to lead the team to the Super Bowl — was intercepted by Corey Webster.

Hundreds gather at King's Atlanta church

By ERRIN HAINES, Associated Press Writer 49 minutes ago

ATLANTA - Hundreds of civil rights leaders and others crowded Martin Luther King Jr.'s Ebenezer Baptist Church on Monday to the celebrate the man and his legacy.

"We would be remiss if we did not commemorate Martin Luther King Jr., a champion of peace in a time of war," said Isaac Newton Farris Jr., a nephew of King.

The King Center has asked the nation to commemorate his birthday for 40 years — for more years than the civil rights leader lived, Farris said. King was assassinated at age 39 on April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of a motel in Memphis, Tenn. He would have turned 79 this year.

Popular view of King ignores complexity

By DEEPTI HAJELA, Associated Press Writer Sun Jan 20, 6:56 PM ET

NEW YORK - They are some of the most famous words in American history: "I have a dream ..." And the man who said them has become an icon.

Martin Luther King Jr. has certainly gotten his share of attention this year, the subject of a presidential campaign controversy over his legacy that blew up just around the time of the holiday created to honor him.

But nearly 40 years after his assassination in April 1968, after the deaths of his wife and of others who knew both the man and what he stood for, some say King is facing the same fate that has befallen many a historical figure — being frozen in a moment in time that ignores the full complexity of the man and his message.

Historians fear MLK's legacy being lost

By DEEPTI HAJELA, Associated Press Writer Mon Jan 21, 9:23 AM ET

NEW YORK - Nearly 40 years after the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., some say his legacy is being frozen in a moment in time that ignores the full complexity of the man and his message.

"Everyone knows — even the smallest kid knows about Martin Luther King — can say his most famous moment was that 'I have a dream' speech," said Henry Louis Taylor Jr., professor of urban and regional planning at the University of Buffalo. "No one can go further than one sentence. All we know is that this guy had a dream. We don't know what that dream was."

King was working on anti-poverty and anti-war issues at the time of his death. He had spoken out against the Vietnam War and was in Memphis when he was killed in April 1968 in support of striking sanitation workers.

Why Christians should seek MLK's dream

Mon Jan 21, 12:16 AM ET

By Tom Krattenmaker

An African-American woman is secretary of State. A black man is a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. African-Americans coached both teams in last year's Super Bowl.

Judging from appearances, it might be tempting to pat ourselves on the back for living up to our founding principles when it comes to the question of race. Tempting and wrong — wrong in a way that challenges citizens with regard for the American, and religious, ideals that infuse our culture.

Apart from notable success stories such as these, you'll find overwhelming evidence that we have a long way to go to carry out the agenda, and honor the legacy, of the civil rights prophet we remember today and of those who stood with him in the struggle for racial justice. Let Christians — the followers of the faith that fueled the work of Martin Luther King Jr. and helped change a nation's heart — lead the way.

Clinton, Obama Clash at Debate ***NEW***
Jan 21 08:44 PM US/Eastern
By NEDRA PICKLER
Associated Press Writer

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama clashed bitterly Monday over Bill Clinton's role in his wife's campaign and Obama's recent praise for Republicans in a presidential debate five days before the pivotal South Carolina primary.

After a brief discussion of the nation's economic woes, the debate devolved into an angry exchange between the two senators, with Clinton noting Obama had taken campaign contributions from a political patron facing fraud charges and Obama calling Clinton a "corporate lawyer sitting on the board of Wal-Mart."

As Obama tried to defend his comments about Republicans and Ronald Reagan, Clinton interrupted and said she has never criticized his remarks on Reagan.

It was heated & may have favored Obama; but as a NYer I remember when Hell-ary (a carpetbagger then) ran & her male GOP opponent became too agressive..things turned against him. Also, the whole thing as of 1/2 time made John Edwards look like the adult.

I was glad to hear Obama state that all three's health plans DO NOT cover illegals; they however are responding to polls showing illegal alien issues are moving towards the top of the lists of our concerns.

The debate audience's reaction suggests the Clinton camp's recent attacks on Obama are backfiring.

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina (CNN) — Hillary Clinton just drew the first boos of the night. She said Barack Obama doesn't take responsibility for his votes, and took issue with his 'present' voting in the Illinois Senate.

It's evidence the nastiness between the two is beginning to backfire.

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina (CNN) – This could be a debate where John Edwards gets back in the game. He's effectively making his points, while Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are in silly squabbles. Voters have too many concerns to care about Obama and Clinton's political potshots.

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina (CNN) — Well, it's obvious who the Democrats think will win the Republican nomination: They're all talking about who will run strongest against John McCain.

This is new — and it's likely the result of his South Carolina win on Saturday. Now each are laying out their plan on who can beat a Republican candidate who has repeatedly shown he appeals to independents.

Clinton is holding strong on her mantra that she's a fighter who has withstood the "Republican attack machine." Obama and Edwards, on the other hand, are stressing their broad appeal to voters not usually inclined to vote for a Democrat.

LONDON (AP) - Stocks fell sharply worldwide Monday following declines on Wall Street last week amid investor pessimism over the U.S. government's stimulus plan to prevent a recession.

U.S. markets were closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but the downbeat mood from last week's market declines there circled through Europe, Asia and the Americas. Britain's benchmark FTSE-100 slumped 5.5 percent to 5,578.20, France's CAC-40 Index tumbled 6.8 percent to 4,744.15, and Germany's blue-chip DAX 30 plunged 7.2 percent to 6,790.19.

In Asia, India's benchmark stock index tumbled 7.4 percent, while Hong Kong's blue-chip Hang Seng index plummeted 5.5 percent to 23,818.86, its biggest percentage drop since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

The American mediascape is about to experience an earthquake, Rupert Murdoch is preparing to topple the New York Times from its position as the pre-eminent general interest daily newspaper, generating severe financial pressure on a struggling media company reeling from mismanagement. There is every indication he will succeed.

The New York Times has long enjoyed the status of America's leading and most influential national general interest newspaper. A wide range of advertisers, particularly purveyors of upscale goods, have paid escalating advertising rates to reach the elite readership presumed to read the nation's leading daily.

The paper has capitalized on its nationwide reach and influential readership to promote a liberal agenda (its public editor admitted the Times was ‘of course...a liberal newspaper" ).

Retired Air Force officer "Buzz" Patterson believes it is the atheists, agnostics, and Wiccans who have too many rights in the military, and who are preventing Christians from freely practicing their faith.

OneNewsNow has reported that an organization called the Military Religious Freedom Foundation is party to a lawsuit claiming Defense Secretary Robert Gates permits a military culture in which soldiers are pressured by their superiors to adopt and espouse Christian beliefs -- and that officers sanction activities by Christian organizations.

But Lt. Col. Robert "Buzz" Patterson (USAF-Ret.) says it is the non-Christians who are forcing their beliefs on Christian members of the military. "I would say that the atheists and the agnostics and the Wiccans have too much say in what happens in today's military. So I think they've got the cart before the horse," he argues.

The play, named Corpus Christi, is due to open next month as part of the city's annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Sydney's Sun-Herald newspaper reported.

A senior Sydney churchman called the play "historical nonsense".

They've severed the fingers of their rivals with machetes...brutally murdered suspected informants, including a 17-year-old pregnant federal witness...attacked and threatened law enforcement officers...committed a string of rapes, assaults, break-ins, auto thefts, extortions, and frauds across the U.S....gotten involved in everything from drug and firearms trafficking to prostitution and money laundering...and are sowing violence and discord, not just here in the U.S., but around the world.

MS-13 members perpetrate violence – from assaults to homicides, using firearms, machetes, or blunt objects – to intimidate rival gangs, law enforcement, and the general public. They often target middle and high school students for recruitment. And they form tenuous alliances...and sometimes vicious rivalries...with other criminal groups, depending on their needs at the time.

Who are they? Members of Mara Salvatrucha, better known as MS-13, who are mostly Salvadoran nationals or first generation Salvadoran-Americans, but also Hondurans, Guatemalans, Mexicans, and other Central and South American immigrants. And according to our recent national threat assessment of this growing, mobile street gang, they could be operating in your community...now or in the near future.

Liberals’ Plan to Stimulate Inflation
By Thomas E. Brewton | View comments | Print This Article Print This Article

Liberals propose to follow the same game plan that gave us stagflation in the 1970s.

As success with the military surge in Iraq increasingly belies their claim that the war is already irretrievably lost, liberals have changed the subject from Iraq to the economy and the rising possibility of a recession. Liberal Republicans and Democrats, as usual, prescribe Federal deficit spending and higher taxes on “the rich.”

That is the doctrine of Keynesian economics, which advocates consumer spending as the exclusive highway to full employment and prosperity. According to Keynes, consumer and business savings must be offset by massively increased Federal spending. What the money is spent for doesn’t matter; just flood the market with money created by bookkeeping entries at the Federal Reserve banks.

Base Runner
Huckabee tries but fails to win the votes of non-evangelicals.
January 21, 2008

Mike Huckabee tried his best to expand beyond his evangelical base in South Carolina and appeal to what his campaign called "Joe Six Pack" voters. Mr. Huckabee was the only candidate to pander to devotees of the Confederate flag, telling crowds that outsiders should leave the banner flag, now displayed in a corner of the grounds of the state capitol, alone: "If somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we'd tell 'em what to do with the pole, that's what we'd do." Contrast that with the comments of Mr. Huckabee's fellow Southerner Fred Thompson: "For a great many Americans, [the flag] is a symbol of racism. I'm glad people have made a decision not to display it . . . in a state capitol."

Mr. Huckabee also tried pandering to immigration foes. As governor he had opposed measures targeting illegal aliens. Just before the primary, he signed a pledge that he would use law enforcement to send all 12 million illegal aliens home. He vehemently denied any inconsistency in his views. It didn't work. Among the one-fourth of voters for whom illegal immigration was a top issue, Mr. Huckabee defeated John McCain by only 33% to 24%--a sign that many voters recognize the issue's complexities and view it in context once they get inside the voting booth.

Fed Cuts Interest Rate 3/4 of a Point

Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rate Three-Quarters of a Point to Try to Head Off Recession

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Federal Reserve, confronted with a global stock sell-off fanned by increased fears of a recession, slashed a key interest rate by three-quarters of a percentage point on Tuesday and indicated further rate cuts were likely.

The surprise reduction in the federal funds rate from 4.25 down to 3.5 percent marked the biggest one-day rate move by the central bank since it cuts its discount rate by a full percentage point in December 1991, a period when the country was struggling to get out of a recession.

Analysts said the Fed will likely delay cutting rates further at its Jan. 29-30 meeting but will probably keep moving rates down aggressively as the economy continues to weaken.
