Yeah, what she ^ said! LOL Another thing that gets on my nerves is to see a kid pop back on their heels and grab a parent's arm and expect the parent to pull them around. And the parents act as if they expect it and politely oblige! Hello, you have legs of your own kid, use them by walking.

My kids will not use heelies, if they ever get them, which is unlikely, in a public area unless it is in an uncrowded OUTDOOR area, like the park. Absolutely NEVER in a parking lot. TOO dangerous. I see a lot of kids on these things in parking lots lately and it is so dangerous! If that child were to fall they are very likely to get hurt, maybe even seriously! My brother tossed his dd heelies in the trash after she nearly gave herself a concussion this summer on those stupid things and nearly got hit by a car. My neices mother was pretty upset about him throwing them away until he made it perfectly clear that she nearly lost her dd's life and that the loss heelies were a small price to pay to keep her dd from getting seriously injuried or killed. Blessings, Garsy

My children aren't old enough for them yet, but I voted "I don't allow my children to have" them. I can't stand them... You see this perfectly normal kid coming toward you and then they start "gliding"...and they don't do it in non-crowded situations...it's in the supermarket, the mall, etc. I would beg any mothers who have or are considering getting these for your children...kill the fad...throw them out! LOL

My kids are too old for them now, but there is no way they would have been allowed to use them in public places unless it was a park or another recreation area. Definitely not in a store, or anyplace like that. It shows a complete lack of boundaries to me. quote:
Nothing is more annoying and rude to me than some kids skating like a madman around a store that's already crowded and difficult to get around. I absolutely agree! My mother was knocked over in the mall by a kid wearing them, and there was absolutely no reason that should have happened.

When my kids are old enough, I'll consider these as a possibility for recreational equipment... Not banned from public, but mostly for outdoor use, on bike paths, parks, skate-parks, possibly on sidewalks if both control and courtesy have been demonstrated, or in a gym that allows them. I would consider helmets to be appropriate during their use, unless they are slower than I think they are. If they ask to wear them as ordinary footwear, I would consider it, if they showed adequate judgment of situations and a compliance with rules. If they wore them to the store, just to be cool, fine, but if they used them in the store or parking lot, they'd be walking back out barefoot. If the school allowed them (I don't think most do) I'd consider that their decision, and probably allow it also; again - only if good judgment had been demonstrated.

Our school does not allow them - as well as a number of other items per our dress code. Apparently the kids that wear them do use them after school and according to my eldest they are using them as they are heading out to meet parents in the parking lots. SO DANGEROUS especially since some of these kids are walking between and around busses to meet their parents. I would hate to hear about a child slipping and falling under a bus and then getting ran over by the bus as it pulled away! I'm wondering if I have to make a call to the school although I'll likely get told that at that time it is no longer school hours, but it still school grounds so who knows maybe something could be done. Blessings, Garsy

My son wanted them a few years back but I'm glad I did not get him one. First of all, schools here will not allow them to wear these shoes. The stores, will not allow them also. They have signs on most stores here about not to have heelies. I remember one time going to the store with my son and a manager talked to me that heelies are not allowed and I said my son's not wearing heelies only to find out that he thought the kid who walked with us was also my son. Even the thought of using this in a skate park or on the sidewalks, I've seen kids getting knocked down on their heelies when other kids with skateboard and rollerskates are around...they're not made for recreational or to speed up and kids with heelies sometimes thinks that they can outrun someoone on skateboard or rollerskates.

I let my kids use them in our gym or if we are outdoors somewhere where they aren't going to run into anyone. My kids have the kind of shoes that have the skate inside the souls and they press a button to pop out the wheels.

I thought they were all made so that the wheels could be removed. Our AWANA has a rule that they can't wear the wheels.

It plays out looking sort of like an old Kung-Fu movie where the good guys stand in the middle and the bad guys, one by one, come forward and are quickly dispatched so that at the end of the scene the good guys are standing in the middle of all these people lying on the ground. Hi-Yah!

Besides the risk of concussions, there are other health risks associated with heelies. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/276596/health_dangers_of_roller_shoes_or_heelies.html I'm so glad my kids are all grown up and I don't have to ban these shoes.

After reading that article, I am really glad that we seem to be making good choices. We chose shoes where you can put the roller parts up and out of the way. Furthermore, they are rarely ever allowed to wear them unless they are going to use them. AND we have regular visits to the chiropractor who would tell us if we were doing something damaging to their backs. To us, they are to be used like roller skates.

yeah that was my main concern when they came out...the pressure on the ankles and knees to be in an awkward position. I don't mind the ones like Ellie has, but as someone with lots of ankle and knee problems I could see how the ones on just the heel could be very had for that. If my kids get anything it will be roller skates (and the proper safety equipment)...I was thinking of getting the kind that you hook to the bottom of your shoe for them for Christmas...by then we will have a big empty cement pond for them to skate in...woohooo....lol. Matt is already looking forward to the draining of the pool so he can try out the slope with his skateboard...lol. Kids.....

My dd had them and loved them. She could skate anywhere that was appropriate (not at school). They are pretty fun shoes to have.

My son has a pair, his school does not allow them, even with he wheel out. If he school did allow them, I wouldn't let him. He only wears them outside or where it is very uncrowded. Today I saw something I thought was strange. When church was over, the kids were all waiting outside on their parents. About three of them had skate boards, going back and forth in front of the church. This is very dangerous. There were elderly people with walker leaving and other people exiting church. I think this is awful. Am I the only one who sees this as wrong?

ok, based off of the majority of the posts, I'm also in the minority here. DD has a pair and we allow her to skate in public as long as she is respectful towards us and other people, in which she always has been. She loves them and we don't have anything against them either. People who don't train their kids properly ruin it for the rest of us...
