Just a couple of weeks ago I was in WalMart when I was coming around a corner and was nearly plowed over by a couple of kids on these blasted things. And quite honestly I do think a few bad apples spoil it for everyone. MOST of the time I see them being used in places where it simple isn't appropriate, like a crowded WalMart on a Saturday afternoon, in the mall, or at a school or indoor sports event. The rudeness and inappropriateness is what bothers me. If parents are okay with the possible health/safety related problems that's really none of my business. I'm simply tired of being ran over by kids who think they own the road and everyone should automatically move out of the way just for them.

Blessings,

Garsy

Well, I don't have kids, but my parents let me wear them around wherever I wanted. They knew I wouldn't be ridiculous and run into people in crowded areas.

Let me tell you, though. . . those things on escalators . . . wheeeee.

Oh and what I forgot to mention is that the kids yelled at ME for being in the way! One even told me to "MOVE!" I looked around to see if I could determine who these children belonged to but I wasn't sure. Had those boys been MY boys - you'd better believe they would have been walking around in stocking feet for the rest of our trip, and holding on to the cart as well. If they can't behave like I've taught them, they will be treated like toddlers that are still learning.

Blessings,

Garsy

Holy cow! Those kids sound like they would be an issue with or without heelies!!! Don't blame the heelies!! And yes, if my son ever acted that way it would be the END of his heelies!! Maybe even the end of his life!! KIDDING

I am 33 weeks pregnant and a few weeks ago I was waddling around the mall. I was there by myself because I was in the area and wanted to drop by Motherhood Maternity to find something to wear for my baby shower. I was in the mall for a little over an hour, but most of that time was spent in the store. While I was there I had 3 kids on heelies run into me. I was so upset. There are signs all over the mall saying they are not allowed but many kids (and parents) don't seem to care.

Very true! But I do also believe that sometimes, some parents and kids assume that because something is a fad or popular for time that it is perfectly okay in ANY and all situtations and often do throw out all common sense and courtesy. Not all but some.

I hope it's OK to have an opinion, even though my kids are older and never had them.

I have gone places where it is posted "no skates, etc.", yet parents think it's OK for their children because they are technically shoes and not skates. Are they teaching their kids there is a fine line when it comes to obeying the rules?

I have seen a lot lately where businesses will put up signs saying "no skate boarding, roller skates, heelies" and they go on to list all of the usualy offenders. Sad when they have to do that!!!

My kids will never have them...for one reason because of the physical toll it takes on the body...the body isn't made to hold the weight like it has to when using your heels to "roll" or walk. Also because there is not a place that would be appropriate for them to use them in.

Our mall sign specifically says no heelies as well. I'm with the crew that says it's bad parenting, not the shoes ... but I will never allow my kids to have them, partially because of the way a number of kids act with them, and partially because of the havoc it creates on the spine, etc.

While in the mall about a month ago, I was waddling along, and pushing a stroller with the two youngest in it ... I had a kid on heelies plow into me and knock me over, and would've taken out the stroller too, had I not given it a good shove out of the way.

Wow! I never had any idea this was such a huge issue. I've never had a problem with any shoe skaters running into me or been bothered by them in any way. I see them all the time, but we either have very courteous ones where I live or I've just never run into the militant ones.

My girls are too old for them now, but I don't think I would have had a problem with allowing them.

they are expensive. I would not have allowed them when my kids were small.

Nor did mine ever have $100.00 athletic shoes. Their feet grow too fast for that kind of money.

No I wouldn't. I think they need to be banned in public places such as stores, etc, and ESP IN CHURCH. It's rude and leaves terrible scuff marks all over the floor that someone has to clean up.

I'm a minority too. (which I'm finding to be quite common)

Both Things own them and while Thing 2 can't maneuver on them, Thing 1 is quite talented. But both are quite considerate of others around them.

I read through the thread. I have to say the whole thing was rather funny. Come on, it's no big deal. It just sounds like a group of people complaining about how rebelious and rude the newer generation is. Give them a break. Although if I was run into or told to move the odds are high that the kid might have an "accident" when I put my foot infront of him

The only problem with that is I as the adult would be held to a higher standard of behavior, and would very likely be accused of assult for the "accident" that I would have LOVED to have "allowed" to happen. And it's really not about the rebelious rude new generation - It's FULLY about their parents that are choosing NOT to do anything about that sort of behavior and allowing it in the first place!

Now I don't say anything about the kids that are being respectful - it's just that I haven't run into very many at all.

Blessings,

Garsy

I used to have a pair of Heelies. In my senior year in high school is when they first started to emerge. Only three other kids in my school had them, well at least wore them to school. They weren't against the rules at my school because it wasn't a problem back them...Only a few kids had them. The kids I knew all seemed to be respectful of other people. And, no one got hurt (except me when I was at my job). I wouldn't have worn them if I had known they were bad for my body.....well, yeah I was 16-17, so I probably would have anyway.

But, it seems that now they are a problem, probably because so many kids have them. I won't let my kids have them if they are still popular by the time my kids are old enough. Not because they could possibly be irresponsible with them, but because they are bad for their bodies. It is the parent's job to keep our kids healthy when they don't know how, or are too young to care.

Our child isnt even born yet, so I am sure we will have a new fad by then, but these things drive me crazy. Mainly its because the kids lack discipline and respect. I have seen way too many kids running people over and using them in inappropriate times. Thats not saying I wouldnt allow my children to have them. But if they used them inappropriately they would no longer have them.

All three kids who ran into me at the mall that day had an adult with them who didn't seem to care about what the child was doing. One kid ran into me and his mom (I guess it was his mom) said "I told you not to run into old people or pregnant ladies!!"

In many states children are required to wear helmets for bikes, skates and skateboards. Why aren't they required for heelies?

Last Sunday I taught children's church and there was a girl there who was about 4th grade. She had them on and was really quite a pain because she was using them when we played Four Corners. I told her that if she continued to use the wheels, she'd have to sit out the rest of the games. She wound up having to sit out.

My daughter has a pair that was given to her as a birthday gift. She is only allowed to wear them at certain times and only in a place that is safe. Thanks for posting that article though (whomever did) because I wasn't aware of the health risks. She really doesn't wear them too often, and they are the kind that the wheels stay inwards until you hit the button, and can also be removed completely and used as just regular tennis shoes. At any rate, this is good info and something I'll definitely keep in mind in the future. She has almost out grown them, and I don't plan on replacing them.
