Want to exercise your social muscles if you are shy?

Go into the biggest mall in your area,
walk into the stores (retail) and strike up a conversation with the sales persons (if it is a challenge to talk to the opposite gender ones, then force yourself to, to let yourself get used to looking in their eyes and actually interacting and not being nervous anymore)
The good thing is it's their job to talk to you and they will smile and be nice about it.

Start with the old "excuse me, but I'd like some help, I was lookign for gifts for my mom/sister/friend/brother and I wondered what you think of this ... blah blah" then try to make some funny observations from there and see if you can get them to laugh. Those salespersons often need a break and like to talk to real people.

I remember one time I tried this experiment talking to a salesperson (an attractive one at that). She said she was just working here temporarily, I said where I worked, and I gave her some future employment advice, then she wanted to give me her resume to get a job there. I gave her a website instead. I bet if I wanted to, I could have had an "instant" coffee date right then. But I had more shopping to do. (instant un-awkward get out of jail free card)

This was such a good thread for us to practice getting out there with.

Need someone to start it again and give a new mission.

So here it is:

You're mission, whether or not you choose to accpet it, is to get a stranger to laugh. (To be easy on the most shy of us, we'll include as strangers those people whose name you know but whom you never talk to or know anything else about)

Thanks, John! You're right, I missed this thread too!

Hmmm......let's see......who'll be my vicitm?????

Well, does last Saturday night work? I was at the Steve Green concert, and a couple from church was also there, but I didn't know them (my friend did), and when she introduced me to them, we started talking about my time in Nashville, and about one particular concert (that Steve was even in attendance) to where I had some industry people asking me if I was involved in a Sandi Patti look alike contest. This poor guy was howling! Steve was cracking up too - but he doesn't count.

No cheating Lisa. You've got to do a new one now that the mission has been issued. Get out there and do it again!

I'll assume my customers count since I don't know all of them really well.

A newer one came in last night (with his friend who is a longtime customer) who has something on lay-away and asked if he could take it home without paying the balance. I asked him if he thought this was like Whimpy on Popeye, "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today".

That got quite a laugh.

How exciting.....my first mission ever on this thread......and an easy one at that..........

Mission completed and repeated three times this morning........Nice thing about laughter is it is contagious. All it takes to make another laugh is to laugh yourself.......

So does this mean I get to assign a new mission?

Go for it. However people still need to solve the last one. (didn't want to give anyone an out)

You're mission, whether or not you choose to accept it, is too be observant of those around you. Watch for someone who seems to be down or having a bad day and brighten their day. ( The action taken will vary depending on the individual and circumstances and that is OK because it is achieving the goal which is important)

Mission Accomplished!

I was talking to an acquaintance of mine and we were chatting about a few things, and then I made a joke about something he said and we both started to laugh.

Your Mission, should you choose to accept it is to find out the birth place of a stranger or acquaintance. The intent is that the person is of the opposite sex, but if you are unable to do this (not sure why not ); then it can be someone within your particular xy, xx catagory. The key here, is to be able to direct a conversation to find out something a little more personal. Like where they are from/birth place.

Happy relating!

Well I finally remembered to enter my mission accomplished. Was in a teleconference today and had the lady on the other end in total stitches. Of course she was trying to sell us something so she had to humor me but hey, a laugh is a laugh

This isn't a chat thread - find the ones that say "chat" in the title. That's where you'll find the "action". Also, these are forums, not a chat room.

Welcome.

Shall we revive this thread again? I've missed all the challenges and I'm afraid I'm getting dull (no comments from the peanut gallery please!! )

Your mission, shall you choose to accept it, is to talk to someone new at work. This may be someone you haven't interacted with before in another department, someone new to your agency, a salesperson, or maybe a new customer. You can't just say "hello", you have to carry on a conversation, even if it's short.

Just wanted to make sure Michelle stayed sharp.

Mission Accomplished multiple times. I have talked to many people who came in my store about a variety of topics not including what they were buying or looking for.

Lets revive an old mission.

Your mission should you choose to accept it is to talk to someone standing near you in line somewhere: grocery store, bank, anywhere is acceptable. Just say something more than hi.

The topic of starting a conversation has been brought up in a number of threads so lets get this one working for us again. These missions are stretching exercises for our social muscles. We'll start off easy and get progressively harder. Here's the first one

Your mission is to talk to five (5) new people before Sunday July 6th 2008 (no weasel room!)

You must talk to them first. You must smile and make eye contact.

This can be as simple as looking someone in the eyes at the store and saying "Hi". Anything you get after that is bonus (but you can't count it toward future missions ).

Three people already done.........I am sure the last two will be completed by the end of the day......

New mission, for those of you brave enough, of those five people offer to pray for at least one.........and for those really brave ask if you can pray right then and there.

I wonder if any will take up the mission?

I love it! I have done that, met a new person, struck up a conversation, learned about a challenge they were experiencing, and offered to pray for them.

It's as much of a blessing to me as it is for them ... giving them the gift of prayer, seeing the unexpected look saying "thank you". Wow.

Not sure I'm going to do much of this between now and Sunday, only because I don't care to share these germs. (believe me, that will be a blessing in itself )

How is this a mission impossible? It is way too easy............Harder for me would be to not smile and say Hi to everyone I meet LOL

Three people already done.........I am sure the last two will be completed by the end of the day......

Joy, read John_O's whole post. This is the first of a series of missions possibles. Just b/c it is easy for you it is not easy for everyone. I'll accept the John_O's mission only I will try to do it outside my own store as that is where I have a harder time. It would be easy for me to complete in my store where I am in my comfort zone.
