John:

Totally impossible. I do not work with any women who are attractive to me in the least. I refuse to give the wrong impression by buying a gift (even something as small as coffee) for someone I'm not attracted to. Buying donuts for the whole office though is something I've done before.

I once bought something for a guy I knew I was not interested in. I sent him a small little Hawaiian care package...in the mail to the mainland! He used to post here a lot. The reason I sent it to him cause I was impressed with his love for Japanese food and such and just simply felt like blessing him with it. It was clear that we were only friends though before I sent it to him. That and I told him beforehand that I would send it. He was totally fine with it. lol What guy will say no to food? lol

There's a guy at work who never brings lunch and is always starving. One day I brought extra food for lunch so that he wouldn't be so hungry. He's single and is trying to not spend too much money but I felt bad for him one day so I just bought him a small lunch. The way we act towards one another is casual and friend-like. The way I gave it to him was, "Dude, you need to eat something. I got you something so you won't starve today." The next day he returned the favor and brought some cheese and grapes.

It's the way you do it I suppose. Act like a buddy and they won't think you are interested. lol I'm not worried so much about what they would think. I have done these things to women as well. The key is to find a clear reason why you bought them the coffee. And it depends how much you talk with your co-workers. If you hardly have ever talked to them at all then an out of the blue coffee would seem strange. Maybe you find a buy one and get one free coupon and just roll into work, approach a lady and say, "Hey I got a free coffee. Please enjoy it."

::

I think I'll post a challenge soon. Muahaha! lol. No, no it will be easy I promise.

Important words bolded

quote:

There's a guy at work who never brings lunch and is always starving. One day I brought extra food for lunch so that he wouldn't be so hungry. He's single and is trying to not spend too much money but I felt bad for him one day so I just bought him a small lunch. The way we act towards one another is casual and friend-like. ("hey. She brought me food. She must be interested in me! After all the way to a man's heart is through his stomach!!!")

quote:

Act like a buddy and they won't think you are interested. lol I'm not worried so much about what they would think.

I've found that no matter how I act if I bring a gift to a woman she thinks it's more than what it is. So I don't do it.

I'm also very concerned about what they think, Why hurt someone unnecessarily? If there's a risk of misinterpretation I won't do it.

quote:

And it depends how much you talk with your co-workers. If you hardly have ever talked to them at all then an out of the blue coffee would seem strange.

I work in a very non-personal office. About the only time I talk to people (or they talk to me) it's business related, except for dad and Don M. (Don's been my friend for years and years)

quote:

Maybe you find a buy one and get one free coupon and just roll into work, approach a lady and say, "Hey I got a free coffee. Please enjoy it."

("What a cheapskate! he expects to impress me with a coffee and he didn't even pay for it!!")

Some things are just better left undone. As I said before I have no problem with buying for the whole office from time to time. But buying for just one person (female) is walking into a minefield blindfolded. (For that matter, these days buying for just one person (male) could also be walking into a scarier minefield.)

There is also free coffee where I work. Actually, community coffee. There is a guy who brings the strongest coffee and makes a big ole pot of it every night. I only felt tempted to partake on election night, and loaded it down with cream and sugar.

The others I work with are:

* My boss (married.)
* Managing Ed (female)
* News ed (male, and in a relationship. With a co-worker. Since our shifts are opposite, I never work with him much anyway.)
* Copy ed. I'm having a hard time thinking of any conversation we've ever had that is not work-related.

Anyway, I think the point of this little assignment is to get us out of our comfort zones and talk to people we wouldn't ordinarily. It is not necessarily to get a date, though we might, eventually.

I'm not saying I won't do this ... just that I can see it being more feasible in 2 weeks, when I am on day shift. They don't have free coffee in that office, and there's a St. Arbucks around the corner ...

Mission: Offer to buy a co-worker a cup of coffee (or beverage), or better yet just bring them one. This cannot be a co-worker that you routinely buy coffee, socialize with outside of work (unless you only have one or two co-workers). Extra points for those who will buy the boss a cup of joe!

Ha! I dodged the bullet again , I work alone.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

Yes, I have been busy all weekend and haven't left the house much. But this afternoon, I couldn't stay inside any longer and needed to make something to eat. There's a little farmer's market that has fresh veggies and fruits just about a mile from my house. So I went there to get some zucchini, yellow squash, and bell pepper.

I drove up, and could see the guy was busy. So I found my produce and went to check out. The guy looked to be about retirement age. When I was there before, I found out that he and a friend own the market and they live out of town.

So as he was ringing up the purchases, I chatted about how nice the weather was and how we have a nice cool front coming down at the end of the week. I knew I wasn't supposed to only chat about the weather, so I continued talking. He said that the nearby lake brings in some nice breezes, and I asked how it was in the summer. He grimaced. He said he wanted to go swimming in the lake, but lamented that he needed "permission" of the owners. I said I wanted to go water skiing, but he said the owners don't allow that, either. So we kept talking about the lake until the co-owner walked in.

The co-owner was the one who helped me pick out a nice watermelon last week. I complemented him on choosing just the right watermelon. He beamed, and said they came from West Virginia and that they were very sweet. We chatted a minute or two longer before heading back to the truck. It was fun and we had a good laugh.

So here's my challenge, if you choose to accept. Find a coffee shop, a bagel shop, or some quaint specialty store in your town where you can get something OTHER THAN coffee. For this assignment, you are not allowed to get coffee, but you are to check out what they do have to offer and report back what you bought (a muffin? bagel? sandwich? tea? water?) You are also to chat with either someone in line or with the clerk, but they have to be of the opposite sex. And the conversation should have more depth than "what's good to eat here?" Conversation about the weather is appropriate for this assignment. Eye contact is optional but highly recommended.

I do that all that time. (can you imagine me NOT talking to someone?) I think my problem is not not being able to talk to people, it's finding the right people to talk to.

This is true - John not talking is like me not driving fast. Just doesn't happen.

I read the OP and thought ... golly, I talk to everybody!

Last week during a practice lab I asked one of my fellow students (a real cute strong Christian) about his work at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta because it is a place I would love to work if I knew for sure I would be staying here once I graduate. The question turned into an hour long discussion about many things! My teachers were smiling at me as if they were suspect of my motivation and his interest! ... we were the only ones left in the lab. But that was not my intension at all!! (I look a lot younger than my years, and many think I am in my ... late ... twenties but I am pretty sure it would be a Demi Moore type of relationship.)

This past Saturday, while teaching my spinning class, I assured them that if anyone had a heart attack during the class, that I was a CPR Instructor and would teach someone how to save them if they needed help. (Joking of course.) I also mentioned that I was a student nurse, so they would be fairly safe. After class, one of the students came up and asked me what school I was attending and what area did I wish to go into. I told her where I went to school and that I hope to work in pediatrics oncology. We talked a bit, then she told me that she was a manager/trainer for the Nurses at Children's Healthcare (for over 20 years) and she would like to help me get a job and scholarship there!!! I was floored ... and will be calling her tomorrow when she gets in her office.

So ... talking to strangers can be a good thing!

You must naturally give off a charming personality. Me, can go back and forth between being "Charming" and "buddy-buddy".

How about bring it for all the ladies? lol Kidding.

quote:

John:

"hey. She brought me food. She must be interested in me! After all the way to a man's heart is through his stomach!!!"

Nope. He doesn't think this.

quote:

John:

"What a cheapskate! he expects to impress me with a coffee and he didn't even pay for it!!"

Hmm. I guess people in general think differently here. Here, if someone gives something free that they picked up they wouldn't assume that the person is automatically trying to impress them. They just receive it as a kind gesture.

Could be a "cultural" difference.

Ok, this one should be interesting for the guys especially...

Ask for specific directions to a destination.

This shouldn't be a problem for me at all being that I am bad with directions.

Na ... I don't think it is cultural. You are right on ... it is a kind gesture. They could have easily used it for their own benefit and chose to give it away ... that's called kindness in most dictionaries!

One thing my mom told me when growing up about our assumptions and how we can project our own feelings onto how we believe other's think ... a lot of people assume that the other person's motives are the same as there own. As far as therapeutic communication is concerned, this phenomenom is called ... I want to say projection???? I will need to look it up. At any rate it is always wise to be aware of how the way you view life affects the way you think about another's motives. I think this is an area that can get all of us in trouble at times.

I think your mom was right.

When it comes to kind gestures we shouldn't automatically assume that there is a motive. I do think that people see kind gestures as motives. Should it be that way though? In my experience and life, kind gestures are taken exactly as that. It's nice to practice the 2nd greatest commandment without worries on whether or not it will taken wrongly. I speak of this in general and not so much in the context of the opposite sex.

Within the context of the opposite sex I suppose we have to assume that just about anyone can take something wrongly. I'm glad I haven't had to run into that problem yet though.

I was going to try to do the OP challenge today I had to get 1 item at the grocery store so I went later than normal but there was only 1 checkout open and the self serve lanes. The checkout had a line 6 people long all with carts full and no line at the self serve so self serve it was. So much for next in line. I'll try again!

I did get directions from someone, but it was over the phone and wouldn't count anyway.

I was going to try one of the challenges this morning, but I couldn't get out the door in time, and had too many errands to run first thing. Maybe tomorrow though.

Did that today at the car rental place. Two times in fact. Once to the hotel and once to the nearest karaoke club. (She was cute too but a bit too young. Bummer)

Mission (almost) accomplished

This morning, sometime after 8am, I decided to try out a little coffee shop. It's located near the courthouse, so there's not much parking, and I had to drive around.

The place was kinda cute. There were various coffee mugs placed around the building, and the color of the walls was like a "coffee" color. They had their menu written on a chalkboard. There were so many variations of coffee including my favorite - the iced coffee. But they had so much more, including water (but I didn't see any tea. Maybe I missed that). But they had muffins, bagels, and even breakfast and lunch sandwiches. This morning, I got a huge blueberry muffin to share with a co-worker. And I got an iced coffee, too. (sorry, just couldn't reisist). All to-go.

The people who were there were alone and looked like they had a lot on their minds, and they didn't look like they were up to conversation. But for some reason, I wasn't either. So my mission wasn't accomplished. But I may go back for lunch or breakfast tomorrow.

I kept thinking about how it would be an ideal place to meet someone for lunch. It was a small, intimate setting, and brightly lit. I need to meet with a gentleman who works at the courthouse, and he's invited me out to lunch. I'm thinking that might be a good place.

Tried to do a number of the challenges today none worked out .

The grocery store had no line at it and a guy cashier.

At the post office I was the only one in line and had a 50/50 chance of getting a guy to wait on me and I got the guy.

Went to the UPS shipping store 3 doors down from my store and once again no line and the girl who sometimes is there wasn't and got the old guy who I talk to regularly instead.

I don't know if I'll ever accomplish the challenges at this rate.
