Eric can sing down to the lowest F-sharp on the piano or thereabouts; I know I've heard him go that low, and maybe to the F.

Would there then be an opportunity for a bass that can hit the double low F? I know these guys can 'sing' but I really would like to have an idea of what type of opportunity there would be for a bass that could do this and be committed and dedicated. There are thousands of guys that can do this but you don't hear of them because they are not with a 'big name' quartet, maybe don't care to be,,,,but I am just wondering how many would really be interested if a bass was available that could do this???

It would depend on a couple of other factors:
(*) whether the bass could also sing a good solo line
(*) how well the bass could sing his harmony part (and, depending on the group, complex harmonies)
(*) how well the bass blended
(*) whether or not the bass smoked--some groups prefer a non-smoker
(*) whether the group was looking for a bass at the time.

If you're interested in becoming a full-time Southern Gospel quartet member, probably the best route is to gain experience with a local or regional group, then apply for openings with a lesser known national group to get experience on the national exposure. It's typically someone with that kind of a resume that the most prestigious groups hire.

Definitely David Hester....and yes, he does hit that double-low C, below the F mentioned above by someone else.

Definitely David Hester!!!!!!

There are a number of great basses out there, but my favorite is Eric Bennett. He can sing the low notes with richness and tone, not just hit them. I also like Tim Duncan, Glenn Dustin, Aaron McCune and Jeff Chapman. Haven't seen any of the others lately.

That is what separates the good from the great bass singers. JD could sing lower than Chief but Chief had that richness and tone that,in my opinion, makes him the greatest of all time, course I'm an old Statesmen fan so I guess I'm a little partial.

With that statement I am in total agreement. I do not like to hear a bass singer just growl.

The topic is low bass, and in that category I have a lot of favorites.

But for pure, smooth, beautiful bass, nobody can beat Eric Bennett and Joe Brown.

I heard Eric in the same time-frame I mentioned when I started the thread. I like him a lot because he is so smooth with his bass harmonies and leads. He was my bass pick in the quartet draft we did on the thread Daniel started a while back. However, I do not think I have heard him go as low as the others I mentioned.

Daniel mentioned Cecil Stringer. I've heard him go down to Eb live with no trouble. JD may have been right in bestowing "lowest bass" on him and Mike Holcomb.

There was mention of Big Chief as having great tone, I agree. However, I've never heard any bass take a solo/lead like George Younce could. JMO

I have been a sucker for bass singers ever since my first SG concert when I saw Big Chief. I love watching and listening to Aaron McCune, Glen Dustin, Tim Duncan, David Hester among others. BUT....Eric Bennett is my favorite Bass whether or not he can or does, hit the lowest note!

I am biased for sure, but my favorite bass is our bass...MIKE ALLEN.
What a beautiful voice! It is really fun and amazing to sing with him.
I have no idea who's the lowest bass.

I do know that Mike is very conservative in his approach to singing the bass part. It's been kind'a fun to see how Ed Hill and Bill Baize (of The Prophets), encourage Mike to "show out" a little more when we are singing...even rehearsing. They always explain to Mike that they are accustomed to "hearing a lot of bass", from all their years of singing with JD.

I would have to agree with Paul on this one...Mike Allen is in my opinion the best bass singer overall. His solo project proved it all to me...He can definately carry a great solo and he has the ability to grab the low ones as well.

As I posted earlier I would much rather hear someone like Mike Allen singing bass than someone like JD Sumner that growled out notes so low and amplified so much that I could feel the vibrations in my chest. To me the only excellent bass singers are those that can and do sing a fourth harmony part not just a growl.

I first heard Mike on the Poet Voices "Trust the Truth" album, and I became an instant fan. It was one of the first albums I heard, and I didn't realize how good he was until I started getting other groups cds.
