Yeah, there was some fry in the first verse. So what? Nearly all bass singers utilize this. Truthfully, it sounded like you hadn't been singing that low very long. That is something that normally improves with both practice and age. That's the real trick, to use it and make it sound good!

ORIGINAL: danielmount He sings the lowest C on the piano regularly (many nights) and can go lower on occasion. Now here is proof that this gentleman does not use vocal fry. You could not sustain it as long as this gentleman does on the very end. Non Vocal Fry Low Bass SINGING

Folks there are many styles of bass singers. Tim Riley is but one. Aaron McCune is more like a Big Cheif, and he is very good a what he does. When I did a project for Palmetto State, when he was with them, he blew me away. At that time, the best bass I had ever worked with. George Younce was a Big Chief kind of bass too, maybe a bit lower. Then you have Armond Morales, who is plenty low, but there has never been a smoother bass voice anywhere, anytime. Our bass, Alan Brewster, in my humble opinion is among the best going today, if not the best. He is a cross between Big Chief, George Younce and Tim Riley. He has the best solo bass voice I have ever heard. And yeah, I am biased no doubt. But listen to the guy and you tell me.

For my money, combining a huge voice, a nice bass solo voice and knocking the bottom out of it, Tim Riley is absolutely the man. JMO

Well, I went to their website when it was announced that they had the preview on there, and there was one song that I had to listen to twice. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out who had the lead part. Then a blogger (I believe it was Daniel Mount) posted that he thought it was David singing it, and I guess that's a logical assumption. That guy is good!

I have scanned over all nine pages of this thread . . . so I may have missed a post or two . . . but one name seems to be missing from the discussion. Gerald Williams of the Melody Boys Quartet is one of the finest all around bass singers in the business today. He is not just a low singer. He is a SINGER with a low voice. He is a wonderful soloist, he's one of the best at singing "modern harmony", he can sing rhythm songs, and he's also got the low notes to go along with it. Mr. Williams is the complete package. Gerald is well into his seventh decade, and he has been singing gospel music professionally since he was 16. I think there is no finer bass singer on the road today than Gerald Williams. He may not rattle the rafters with his low notes song after song, but each note he sings is a quality note, square in the middle of the pitch.

Gerald, who was inducted in the SG Hall of Fame in 2006, has one of the smoothest bass vocies in the industry. He can surely hit those los notes also. He has sang with the Melody Boys since 1949, over 50 years. That's probably a record, if not very close to it.

No doubt Gerald has one of the best bass solo voices going and he is indeed a Gentleman, along the lines of say Squire Parsons.

Hidee Everyone, This is my first post; however, I have been reading for a while. Mr. Czar, I appreciate you mentioning my favorite bass singer, Gerald Williams. I know that he is not the lowest; however, his voice is simply beautiful. He does not sing his lowest notes in concert. However, he "blew away" the GOGR audience at the Jam Session when he sang "Standing by the River" with a scrap iron Quartet and evermore nailed the low note roll on the word "shore"! Many of the young men you have mentioned in this thread have come to Gerald at NQC and other concerts and expressed their appreciation and asked him for vocal tips. He is now in his 59th year of singing in the "Quartet World". I'm glad he is finally beginning to receive some credit. quote:

You know being low is not even what it is all about. I would ten times rather hear a good blend than a growl. Still think Mike Allen has got it for me. I guess my other 2 would be Jeff Chapman and of course Tim Riley. Mike allen just has it all in my opinion. If you havent heard his solo cd you need to.
