I did some research and I felt inclined to share this information with you. The word masturbation derives from a Latin word "manus turbare" or "manu stuprare".

The word masturbation in Latin (manu stuprare) means to "to defile or disturb with the hand." This translation can be found in the Oxford English Dictionary.

And we all know that it is indeed a sin to "defile our body" as the bible says. Hence we can conclude from the Latin word "manu stuprare" which means "to defile with the hand" that masturbation is a sin.

The use of the Latin has nothing to do at all with the original languages of the Bible -- Hebrew (OT), Aramaic (OT, a few NT words), and Greek (Koine Greek/NT). The Greek word does not have the same meaning as the Latin.

Not only that, but it also means, according to your own definition, "to disturb with the hand." How can you assume that "defile" is the intended meaning and not "disturb." I believe it takes some disturbing to accomplish the task.[:D]

I was searching for some help with masturbation, and I came across this discussion.

Anyone that believes that masturbation is not a sin, must be looking for an excuse to do it. Why else would you argue the point.

Jesus said that if you even THINK about sleeping with a woman it is a sin. So, unless you are thinking about nothing or a man, it is always a sin to masturbate (i guess if you are thinking of your wife it could be technically ok, if she was on board with it)

like the guy says ,,,,think on noble and pure things.....

Remember what Romans says about not only practicing such things but approving of these things. Masturbation is pretty vile, I can tell you from 41 years of experience! I would hope that none of you are practicing it.

I just read my post and I did not mean to suggest that it was ok to think of men when masturbating...of course that is also a sin quoted several times in scripture.

No that is not what he said. He said to look at a woman to lust after her is a sin. They are not the same thing.

I haven't had the chance to read all of the posts for this "thread" due to the enormity (40 pages), but I just wonder......how many of you who have posted here have battled the "M" issue as opposed to how many of you are simply giving personal opinions, advice, or spiritual/scriptural advice. From the number of posts, it's quite obvious that this is indeed a BIG topic of discussion, but are we all being totally honest and open about whether or not we've personally been in the battle? Often we are quick to condemn actions of others when privately we may be doing the same thing, if not worse.

So if I, or someone else, were to masturbate while thinking about his wife and she was unavailable then he's sinning? Wow, then I guess while I was in basic training and my wife was unavailable I sinned. Then again, the five months I spent in Germany prior to my wife coming over I sinned as well. Of course, it may have made more sense to just go find a prostitute. Sorry, that was just sarcasm. But really, as long as the thoughts aren't impure or about someone other than your spouse, wherein is the sin? Please explain.

you have to ask yourself the question wwjd. i don't know if its a sin or not. some say yes some say no. everyone sins and falls short of the glory of God. a sin is a sin all we can do is ask God to 4give our sins and try not to do them any more

Give us a scripture reference, in context, without your supposition, that says it is. Legalism is the antithesis of grace.

Actually if you are thinking about her sexually you are committing the sin part of "M" anyway. The physical activity by itself is not sinful (see discussion earlier in the thread) it's theh thoughts that usually accompany the activity that are sinful.

Please forgive if I seem legalistic in my response to this discussion but, the teaching in the Bible is quite clear on sexual behavior.
Adultery and fornication are both prohibited as is same sex relations and sodomites etc.
Any sexual behavior outside of mariage that is not between a man and his wife is not accepted by God.
Masturbation is sexual behavior, it can not be abstracted to be nothing more than a health issue or natural bodily function.
Although masturbation can involve you mariage partner, it in this context does not, so is outside the sanction of Gods design for men and women.
Who ever argues otherwise is trying the Bill Clinton defence and as you know it did not work.
Sexual behavior is sexual behavior.
Masturbation has always been known as sexual in nature.
The other arguments just don't wash.

Well I just signed onto this site and I saw this and I had to comment. Half of you comment on how and man should just have sex with his wife, or w/e. Well i'm not th best looking guy and my chances of getting a girl are slim, so I see masturbation as a way of avoiding doing something sinful. So stop assuming everyone has a fricken spouse alright? I mean, just cause you do doesnt mean I do........ O well just wanted to put in my 2 cents.

Also, I just wanted to comment to those who think that by masturbating your losing your virginity. You are NOT losing your virginity by masturbating. Your not with a woman, and not having true intercourse, therefore, Virginity is not lost.

Just thought i'd made that clear.

Simple answer: Would you do this (masterbate) in front of your children or your mother, I doubt it. Before I became a Christian I used to have stacks of porn mags for this purpose; very strange this Christianity is, today I have no porn mags and I no longer masterbate. I was also an alcoholic until Jesus Christ dried me out I no longer crave drink whatever your addiction or secret sin is, give it to the Lord ask for His help, as an extra precaution get yourself an accountability partner. We are after all overcomers (no pun intended)

Not a good argument. I wouldn't have sex with my wife in front of my kid or others, but sex between my wife and me is not sinful. Porn mags are sinful since they encourage sex with others than your wife and outside of your own marraige bed. Alcoholism is a sin to be repented of--not a sickness.

It is a lewed behavior. I can't stand the fact that the world says "it's natural." Sex between married couples is "natural." Otherwise, if you do masturbait pray, ask forgiveness and repent.
