Ok, so Chase had been doing wonderfully at night the last couple of weeks, going to bed at 10:00 and sleeping to 3:30, feeding and then sleeping til 7:00 or so...until the last couple of nights, he's been waking up at 1:30, then again at 4-ish and then again... last night he was up almost all night, he ate 4 times in the night. I hope we get our old schedule back again soon!

Sarah, how old is Jack now? I find our nighttime routine usually helps... Bath, feed, bed. Then the first feeding in the night, he goes right back to sleep. Sometimes after the second feeding he'll go back to sleep, and sometimes he'll stay up. If the second feeding is close to 7 or 8, I don't mind, but when it's still 5am, I would love for him to go back to sleep. I really like routine...it's frustrating when they keep switching it up. Hubby thinks maybe it's a growth spurt, but we just had one last weekend, not sure how long they last!

the nurse that came around to visit me the 2nd week home said they have found research to suggest that babies not only go through physical growth spurts where they will eat alot, sleep differently, but intellectual growth spurts too which would count for some of the changes that Sarah has noticed as there are alot, their little brains are learning so much and taking so much in that just before a new thing or trick is learned their brain has begun to develop it all. Oh, I just read the bottom paragraph of Sarah's post where she mentiones the mental growth. LOL

he was a having a mental growth spurt Ruth, that's what the midwife told me to look out for, you don't know its happening while it is happening but after once they have done something new you can be like "ohhhh that's what last week was about!"

Something I've been curious about. My little ones seem to temporarily regress before a big mental or developmental jump. Take Luke for example. He was starting to babble pretty well, using 5 or 6 words consistently, then for about two weeks, quit talking almost completely. Then he starts back and has added about 10 words and his comprehension has grown by leaps and bounds. Anyone else experience that? --Kat

My boy is a lot younger than your Luke, but he definitely has periods of chattiness and periods of quiet (not just during the day but over the span of weeks). My dH is bummed, as Nathan hasn't said "da da" in over a month. He makes lots of sounds, but not always the same ones.

I posted a question in the "breast wasn't best" thread. We're discovering for my own well being, and because of severe sleep deprivation the last couple of nights, we're going to supplement with formula, maybe one bottle per day, and maybe not even that much. I just want to know the "right" way to do it...can anyone enlighten me?

Yolanda, when DH is home from work he gives her the middle of the night bottle. I end up going between 6-9 hours without nursing depending how she is sleeping. I've found that even if I wake up and pump for 15 minutes it's still more restful then nursing for 45 minutes, but usually I don't bother. It doesn't seem to have bothered my supply much...

ORIGINAL: Sideways So, I read in one of the Parenting threads that the worldwide average age for weaning is age four. Has anyone else heard this? Are there statistics out there somewhere for typical BFing times in other countries? I'm genuinely curious. Age four sounds pretty old for an average weaning time - I would buy age two if we're talking non-US countries, but not age four. And though this isn't BFing - who in the world came up with the crazy idea that 5 hours of sleep is "sleeping through the night". Sounds like one of those idea like "all pregnancies last 40 weeks" - pulled out of thin air. I count 8 hours of sleep as sleeping through the night, although that hasn't happened much lately. For the first half of the night, Nathan was up every hour, on the hour. At least he slept straight through from 2am to 6am. Unless your name is Prudent, most of us would like to have more than 4-5 hours of straight sleep. (I know we don't get it, but we'd like it.) here are some stats on it.

ORIGINAL: Sideways Oh, indeed, I believe that many other countries wean later then we do. I know the World Health Organization recommends BFing until age 2. But an average age of weaning being four? That must mean that there's a whole lot of children still BFing at age 5, 6 and 7. When you and the child can stand next to each other and be able to BF - I think it's time to put the breasts away. lol...Unless you are really short or your child is really tall (or you are really really REALLY saggy) most 7 year olds could not stand and nurse anyway.... That said...keep in mind that even if a child DOES nurse until age 6 or 7...it is not like nursing an infant..you are talking MAYBE one nursing event a day IF that.... I have never nursed one that long. I have nursed until age 4. He was nursing maybe once a week if that much...and so when he turned 4, I simply said "okay...no more nummy" (we had told him several months prior that when he turned 4 there wouldn't be any more nummy). He was okay with that. I have had one self-wean at 18 months, one at 2 1/2 years (with a little encouragement from me because it is what his dad wanted at that time...I always regretted it and so did my husband), one who self-weaned at 3 3/4 years, one weaned at 4, and one who is still nursing at 2 1/2. I also think developmental age has something to do with it. I know a lady who still nursed her child at 9 years of age...but please keep in mind this child was severely retarded and had the mental age of about a 18 months old. The mother was working on weaning her, but not quickly...just the way you would an 18 month old. Health issues were the main reason she had continued it for so long.

Yolanda I would do the forumla with Grace just before we went to bed, or hubby would do it, then I would go to bed, he would stay up and feed her, it was easier than making him wake in the middle of the night when he had to work all day so we kept to that routine for a few months until I didn't need him to do it any longer.

Yolanda, if you give one at the same time every day, it should work out.

as long as a bottle is something PLANNED into your schedule, your body will adjust to that and not diminish milk supply. IF you do it randomly (just whenever, not at a set feeding such as before bed, or the feeding before bath ...notice I said feeding, not time), that can affect your supply because your body does not know what to expect. My SIL worked full time after my niece was born...she nursed her at home and on her days off (which were set) and formula fed her during her work hours (well..the babysitter did) and she had no trouble making enough milk, and baby did well also because there was a routine as to when certain things happened, even though actual times may have varied....

So even if we did it at bedtime every other day or something like that, it should still be ok? Last night we gave formula at bedtime, and I pumped, then hubby gave the pumped bottle in the middle of the night to give me a rest, I had a rough week, so it worked out well, and babe had a good night last night, unlike the last few nights this week. Thanks for all the opinions, encouragement and support ladies, I'm so glad I have somewhere to go with all my questions! Now, does anybody know what I could give to help with constipation? Poor baby has been pushing all morning, so hard he's spitting up, but he's not getting anything out. How long should I wait before doing something? Could the formula have caused that?

How long should I wait before doing something? Could the formula have caused that? How old is baby? That determines what you can do..... Yes, formula could be the cause....the iron content in formula can constipate babies pretty quickly... I would wait till this afternoon and see what happens....you might try giving him apple juice or white grape juice (diluted!!!!!) in a bottle or by tsp (tiny little bits) if he has not gone by then. If he is 4 months or older...try prunes...but if I remember right he is a newborn (under 4 months) correct? You can also give him a tummy massage....rub his tummy in a big circle clockwise (going to YOUR right) and then stroke downwards hand over hand.....then gently bring his little legs up (bend the knees gently) and straighten them out gently several times...this helps with gas and can help the bowels to move. The I Love You technique also helps. With I L U in mind, start at the bottom right hand side of the babies abdomen. Using small, gentle circular motions, gently rub towards the top right forming the letter I. Make sure to stop when you feel the rib cage. Repeat this action then move across the abdomen, but this time immediately above the belly button towards the left hand side, forming the letter L. Repeat this action then go down to the bottom left to form the letter U. Repeat the I Love You massage between 5 and 10 times

He's 6 weeks old, I will wait a little bit to see what he does. A doctor told my neighbour that a drop of maple syrup would help also...

ORIGINAL: towgirl A doctor told my neighbour that a drop of maple syrup would help also... That's because adding some form of sugar to a baby's diet is a constipation remedy that has been around for centuries. The sugar works by drawing additional fluid into baby’s bowel to soften the stools. I'd suggest that if you decide to try it, or brown sugar, you give it diluted with a little cooled boiled water, preferably just before the formula feed. Actually, giving a little water can be as, if not more, effective than adding sugars to a baby’s diet. The idea is to offer just 1oz of cooled boiled water, once or twice a day.
