Well we just did about 5 min or so of tummy time. It did help produce a good burp! Oh, and Ryan LOVES to watch me nurse Mary. He thinks it is the most amazing thing to see. However, he is very against me nursing in public. Not that it makes him uncomfortable, but rather those men out there who are single or have no children; he doesn't want me making them feel uncomfortable. In my opinion, my baby's hungry I feed her.

I think if people are uncomfortable with it, that it's their problem, not mine. Now I wouldn't choose to feed him in the middle of some busy place, but that's my choice, because, well, at this point, he's not so modest about nursing...too busy and popping off all the time to look around, and he's waaaaay too nosy for a blanket overtop!! LOL

I was never personally comfortable with nursing in public. I either nursed him in the car before going into the public place or I would nurse him in the car after we left. I have also nursed in dressing rooms and our mall has a nursing nook that I used a few times. It really was never a matter of worrying about the comfort level of others, it was my concern about what I was comfortable with. I was unable to always be discrete with making sure the blanket stayed getting him latched, etc. Then when he got older he was distracted way to easily so it wouldn't have worked then either. I do want to get a really nice cover/wrap for the next baby because I think I might be more comfortable that way knowing it will stay in place unlike a blanket.

Something I have been wondering as we near closer and closer to trying again for another baby so I thought I would ask. Is it a lot harder to nurse a second child and have to deal with a toddler at the same time? The thought scares me silly. I have seen my best friend do it, but she sounded like she didn't enjoy nursing the second time around because she was having to take care of a toddler. I enjoyed my nursing time with Hunter a lot, but it was always (usually) a relaxing time for us. I got to sit on the couch for 20-30 minutes, watch tv, and put my feet up. Next time around I don't want to be like "hurry up kid I have things to do". Hope I am making sense, just curious if some of you found it difficult to stick to nursing your second or even third child due to having other children to take care of.

I loved the breaks that nursing afforded when I had my second child. It's important to take breaks! Brandon was 2.5 when Nate was born. I did come down with an extremely bad cough and cold afterwards and was always asking Brandon to bring me a kleenex, and, being 2 and a half, he would bring me imaginary tissues...so do keep a box nearby, lol. Also once early on he wanted to nurse, so I told him he could and he crawled up on the pillow on my lap, stuck his mouth on my boob and then sat there, waiting for the magic...when there was no magic he decided it wasn't anything to brag about, climbed down and never asked again! LOL But other than that, I don't remember a problem...we would read books or he'd play or we'd talk, or I'd cross stitch--I never had an experience where I couldn't take care of Brandon because I was nursing Nate. We did use the babysling a lot with Nate, though, so I had my hands free much of the time. I could even nurse and shop at the same time, lol, of which I was very proud.

Is it a lot harder to nurse a second child and have to deal with a toddler at the same time? I haven't found it that much more difficult because of older ones being around. I mean, they learn pretty fast what is and is not going to work while you are nursing the little one....and remember that you are looking at his abilities now, but in a year (or more) he will be much much older and able to do more on his own and for longer times. By that age (2.5 or 3 or so) you can trust them more to play on their own, or color on their own, or any number of things. I keep the same expectations with each baby then I did with our first....my main objective was to provide what the littlest needed first...but sometimes that meant setting up the older one before I could do that. I have spent countless hours analyzing what does and does not work with our needs as far as organization goes. If it doesn't work the way it is, I change it to a much easier way. I am constantly trying to reevaluate what our specific needs are at that time in the kids/babies lives. Most kids by the age of three or a bit younger like doing things to help you out, so I utilize that...I put things more in their reach so they CAN help (like their cups, or small individually divided already snacks for them, colors and books, etc)...and that comes in handy!!! My main thing though was to not have my expectations too high...I don't ever expect that the end of pregnancy is going to be the end of relaxing for a while...like Jennifer said, relaxing is important and nursing affords that great opportunity...if you choose to utilize it.

What should a normal breastfed poop look like? Mary has frequent bowel movements, but they are very small. They are very yellow and curd like, however they are also very watery. She squirted on my hand at the last diaper change and it was all liquid. Is this normal? She is 11 days old.

Sounds normal, Nicole. My babies are always very watery in the beginning, hence the up the back poop explosions the second they pooped. Nursing with an older toddler...the only problem I have had is the older child testing to see what you will do if they act up while you are nursing. Sometimes, it is necessary to put the nursing baby down (yes, screaming for milk) and deal with the toddler so that they know they will NOT get away with any baloney while you are nursing. It didn't take many times, and they did learn. It's also a good idea to have specific things you only allow them to play with while baby is nursing, or even, if you are desparate, allow them to watch a favorite video or TV show only while you nurse. You also may need to snuggle and read to the older child after the baby has been fed and satisfied. None of these things are a big deal and you just adjust your life to fit two, or three, or four, or five.

We're hoping to have our kids relatively close, so I've been thinking about the same thing as you, Chelle. The idea of a toddler Nathan and an infant is ridiculously scary to me, but not enough for me to space them 4 years apart, unless God steps in a forces a long wait. ETA: I almost never nursed away from home, and when I did, I usually went to the car. I just felt more comfortable that way.

It's easier with the 3rd and 4th because there's older kids to entertain the youngest while you nurse. Honestly, when we had our 2nd baby - the oldest got to watch TV while nursing, especially at the beginning. She got into everything otherwise!

I have not found it that difficult... with my first two..they were two years apart..and I just kept a basket of books that we could only look through when I was nursing the baby....we also had some toys that were only for that time...I also made my oldest as much a part of that process as I could...she could explore his feet and hands and we would talk alot about everything..I also made sure to have her sit on the side of my "free arm" so that I could hug her too. With the third one...she was 6 years younger than her brother...not a big deal at all. With my fourth....the older one was 3 3/4...and she had just weaned 2 weeks before he was born. Used the same techiniques that I used the first time...and she loved to hold his little hand while he ate. With my fifth...her brother was only 22 months when she was born..and loved to sit on my lap and watch her eat and hold her fingers or come and stand there and touch her head...he was so proud to be a big brother...he was still nursing as well so he would wait patiently for his turn (and sometimes they'd get nursed at the same time). A lot of what makes a different is YOUR attitude about it. If you are stressed...they pick up on that and react accordingly (in other words..they will make it MORE stressful)...if you are relaxed and ready to have activities that are theirs only at feeding time....they will see it as a special time for them too. And it is amazing how quickly you get good at feeding baby while walking toddler to the potty, etc!

That's a really funny comic. When I'm BFing I call myself the "lunch lady" (anybody hear the Adam Sandler Lunch Lady song?).

Great. Now I'm going to have the lunchlady song stuck in my head all day. May have to pull out my Best of Adam Sandler DVD tonight to unstick it. Will always calls me "Momcow" during the nurse-all-day sessions at the beginning. He also loves to call my pump "The milking machine." --Kat
