We make it as we go since Miss Picky Pants will only drink it at a certain temperature(just a couple degrees below TOO hot).

One more then I'm going to take a nap... We use tap water at home, and when we visit MD we use bottled water since my parents have a well.

ORIGINAL: peculiar_lady2 does everyone make it all up at the beginning of the day, or just as you need it?[/ I used to make it up once or twice a day. By 5 months they were both only have 4 bottles a day so it wasn't much to make up. It was especially easy with my dd as she liked to drink it cold straight out of the fridge! (still only likes ice cold milk now!) My ds was happy with it just with the chill taken off (I'd put the bottle in a jug of warm/hot water for a minute or so).

Is something wrong with well water? We have a well and I just use water from the tap. Oh, and about dumping uneaten stuff--is that REALLY necessary? I always do because all the "books" say to, but what is the concern? Bacteria, I think? What does it harm?

What does it harm? ok...this one I know.....hehehe. It's the same with uneaten baby food....the saliva gets into it and can cause it to start breaking down the enzymes...cause that's what saliva does. It's the first thing the digestive tract has that starts food digesting. So any formula or food that is uneaten that the saliva could get into you need to throw out.

ORIGINAL: reach I know that I am planning on bottle feeding some feedings. Especially since I will be working, and I want my morning husband to be able to get up with the baby in the morning and feed him/her. If I am able to pump this bottle, great. If not, I will use formula. This will give me a few hours sleep, so I don't go crazy. I am a night owl, so I could do the night feeding, as long as I get my sleep in the morning. My husband is up at 5am, so why not feed and change the baby and let me sleep. That makes for very happy parents. I know that I am talking about a perfect world, but hey, I can dream! I am not against formula or breast feeding. To be honest, I would probably not BF at all if it wasn't for the cost of formula, and God gave us the ability to make it, why pay for it. (That is my husband speaking through me). This is what we did with Grace, although hubby stayed up late with her and gave her a bottle before he went to bed and put her down, meant I got a few hours extra sleep, it wasn't about trying to "fill her up" which is what some ladies on here (and irl) seem to think people use supplementing for, it was because I needed a break (had PPD) and I didn't want to sit pumping (applause to all those who do!). So that makes me kind of mad when I read "just because you give them some formula doens't mean they will sleep any longer". That may be true, but it gives the MOTHER a chance to get some sleep! And that's what I used it for, but even if I did use it to try and "fill her up" that's my business, and if it doesn't work, I will learn :) btw I added this post BEFORE I read all the other pages, but Manda has stated in the OP that we can talk about the guilt that we feel using formula, so I think the other posts where someone was mentioning it were valid. btw I think it can go both ways, and I don't think its right to say "just don't read the thread" we can read whatever thread we like, but if you do get offended, don't go back there for a while. anyway...

Thank you for all the nice comments, I wasn't fishing (really)! We use Enfamil Lipil with filtered tap water (because I prefer the taste and we live in an area with tobacco farms) and I make it up during the day but leave a bottle in the fridge for either the morning or a rare 3 am ringing of the dinner bell. I do not dump them if he does not finish them, but I don't let them sit around all day either. Bug either sucks them down or sips off and on for awhile(1-2 hours in this mode) so I let him do his thing. If he finishes half and stops I put it in the fridge. I think the sipping is sign of thirst more then hunger so I am working on getting him to take water from a sippy cup. I would not take this approach with a newborn or young baby. Kris

Amber, we use bottled water there because it hasn't been lab tested that my parents know of(it's a rental) and I don't want to risk it with ickies and high mineral content, etc...

Thanks Ryanne for the tip about asking my Paed about the formula and whether we should try it or not. I would prefer to just keep breastfeeding if I can as I know it is best for him, but its good to know there are options

I was thinking if he could give you samples of different kinds then you wouldn't waste your money buying something he won't drink. I know our Ped's always have TONS of those samples.

yeah, they are so expensive for a tin aren't they? I know they used to have like 1 feeds worth in the shops you could buy of 2 different brands but last time I looked they were gone, I do have 2 in my cupboard though so if he says to give it a try I will.

I would usually boil the water in the morning and put itin a pitcher in the fridge. When I started getting to the point of not being able to pump enough for my whole shift, I would boil some water before work, and make all the bottles for mymom for the night with half formula and half breastmilk. That way when Timmy would wake her up, she just microwave the bottle real quick and throw a nipple on there. When Timmy got to be about 9 months or so, we stopped boiling the water and the bottles and sippies and just used the dishwasher and tap. I'll confess though, I didn't boil anything with Jimmy. Maybe that's how he got thrush...bacteria from the bottles maybe?

I never microwaved the bottles - I boiled a kettle, poured some boiling water into a jug, and stood the bottle of milk in it for a minute or so. Christina, are you saying you haven't ever sterlised any of the bottles and teats for Jimmy?

Christina, if you put them in the dishwasher that counts as sterilizing. I haven't "sterilized" anything since Gabby was in the NICU.

THESE are what we used in the NICU, I still have some of them left. Oh... I did sterilize my pump parts once a week.

I used the bags too. Very convenient since I don't have a dishwasher. But it was only once a week or so. Kris

I never sterilised any of Graces' bottles or teats, I remember my stepmum used to with my brother and sister. I just used to pout boiling hot water over them, or wash them in real hot water with some detergent. May not be right, but she was never sick.

We only had three bottles for Jimmy and we used more than three bottlesa day for a short period, so they would get sanitized in the dishwasher, but I'd often hand wash later in the day. Looking back I think it was pretty stupid. I guess I had thought the sanitizing thing was something they did in the old days. I hadn't read about it in my baby book, but my mom got me started on it when Timmy was a baby. So, I thought it was like old info like you'll catch a cold going outside with a wet head kind of thing. He wasn't on bottles after that because I managed to get my supply back up, but when he turned six months I started boiling the sippies for him and the bottles that my milk went into for his cereal, and no thrush problems.
