We must have cross posted. Yeah, see I knew I wasn't the only one. I did hear from my ped. that thrush can be caused by bacteria in bottles though from not properly santizing them.

Well I used to wash the bottles and teats (what you call nipples) in hot water with detergent, using a bottle brush to clean every bit of the inside. Then I'd rinse them thoroughly, to remove any traces of detergent, then put them in a large plastic tub containing cold water with a Milton Sterilising Tablet dissolved in it. The dummies (pacis) would go in there too.
I did this till they were about 9 months old.
Advice in the UK seems to be to still sterilise things, either by boiling, steaming, microwave steaming or by using sterilising tablets as I used to.

Christina, if we use the same bottle twice in a row then I just rinse it with soap and scalding water(our tap water is hot enough to cause BAD burns).
My mom bottle fed all of us(6 kids) and never sterilized anything except for using the dishwasher.

The only time I sterilize is when they've had thrush, strep, or some other thing they could be reinfected with. I do buy bottled water for bottles (of kids I babysit), but that's because our water is disgusting and none of us drink it.

I've never owned a dishwasher!
What I read on the net says that, with a dishwasher, it only has a sterilising effect if it's on a hot programme where the temperature is 80 degrees Centigrade/176 degrees Fahrenheit or above.

Yup, that's what our dishwasher has, it has it's own heating element to get the water hot enough.

LOL...reminds me of something someone told me once about having lots of babies and paci's (although this would go for bottles too I guess in some cases). The first baby you boil it, boil the utensils you use to touch it, place it to dry on a sanitary towel that has been bleached in hot water. When it's dry you use the utensils you have to gently place it into it's own sanitary zip top bag and close it with gloved hands. When the baby drops one on the floor you put that on into a bag to re-boil, etc, and you pull out another one that is pre-packaged and waiting for you. You continue this for most/all of the baby's life with the paci. Baby number two comes along and you don't go to such extremes, but you still boil them when you can, and try to keep them in a sanitary zip top bag. When one drops you don't have four hands anymore to get a "clean/sanitary" one out, so you instead go to rinsing it off, looking at it to see if it's "clean"....looks good, back in baby's mouth it goes. Baby number three comes along and you stop picking them up yourself...the other kids do that for you, and they don't know not to just give it back to the baby, not even rinsed off. If you happen to pick it up, you find that there's no way to rinse it off, and you don't have any more, so you spit on it, wipe it with your shirt, and stick it back in the baby's mouth.
LOL. (ok...you have to also picture this lady acting this all out while she was telling me...it was hilarious!!!!)
on that note though, that's one reason we chose to use playtex bottles that you just put a bag into...too often things like cups and bottles get lost, and I sure didn't want to have to open that thing if it had been lost for a few days (or God forbid a few weeks!!!). It was much easier to just toss the bag and nipple if necessary...nipples are easily replaced and much cheaper then replacing the whole bottle!!!

that's very possible...but since you have a dishwasher I highly doubt that was a big thing...unless you didn't use it then.
my moms water is disgusting....no one drinks it (bottled water companies make a fortune where she lives!!!!)....so I use bottled water for everything the kids/babies drink. Here though our water is pretty good, so I don't worry about it. It's not as good as the water that we used to get from the artesian spring in TN, but it's good enough for coming from the tap!!!

My dd (now 14yo) was and is also still a finicky eater but thankfully was fine with formula - probably because she was offered it when she was very young (when she was a day or so old, because of the neo-natal jaundice).

For how long did you all bottle-feed your babies - how old were they when you started to transition onto a cup, and at what age did you give them their last bottle?

good questions......
#1 I stopped nursing at 9mo, but he got a bottle of juice (one a day) from just a few weeks old because it kept him regular and nothing else would (because my milk is very very thick...it's something I got from my mom...hers was the same way). When he stopped nursing we just went to either formula or milk (he was big for his age)...and by 12mo he was on straight milk. He transitioned to a sippy cup around a year old also...bottles were totally gone by 16mo because we didn't want him trying to drink his sisters bottle and that's when she was born. I can't remember exactly what age it was though...but sometime between 12 and 16 mo.'s
#2 we put on the bottle of juice (again on a day) by a few weeks old to regulate her better...same issue with my milk that time too. She nursed until she was 15-16 mo and we occasionally used formula whenever we wanted to or needed to. It wasn't a necessary thing though, so it was very conditional. She was on the sippy cup somewhere around a year old...maybe a little older...by the time she stopped nursing she was on the sippy cup and not using bottles anymore.
#3 nursed until she was 15-16 mo too...she took a bottle before that occasionally (mostly started after Paul deployed so that I could get occasional breaks from the kids). She stopped nursing because my lap was gone (pregnant) and she didn't like that....but when she stopped she did not have the ability to use a sippy cup yet. I don't know what the problem was, but we tried every kind of cup out there...if it was for sale I bought it to see if she could use it. We didn't find one that she could get anything out of until she was close to 20mo or so. By then she was stuck on the bottle. We worked it out slowly with her...very very slowly...and by 30mo it was just when she was tired that she wanted it. We put the cap of 36mo on her, and told her for several months that 3yo's don't use a bottle...and the last time she had the bottle was right before she turned 3 back in December of last year. After that we packed them up and she has just done sippy cups since then.
#4 never took a bottle...he never needed it to stay regular like the others needed (for juice) so we never gave him anything. He is the only one that also never had formula at some point or another for whatever reason. He nursed until just a few months ago...got sick and stopped after that (about 19-20mo)...he went straight to the sippy cup.

Timmy srated getting formula around 3 months old, a sippy cup of juice water on his 6 month birthday (also when we started solids), and he was completely bottle-fed with no nursing around 7 months. He had a bottle until he was 22ish months old, but not everyday. He didn't seem to actually need the bottle that long because it didn't put him to sleep anymore, so I'm not exactly sure why we still gave it to him. He would only get it before nap and bedtime. I started giving Jimmy soy formula for nighttime feedings to help his gas when he was around 8 weeks old. So, I just stopped those bottles Also, prior to that, I had a little bit of a supply issue in the morning and late afternoon for some reason, so he was getting two bottles a day. I got on some meds right away for my supply though, so that only lasted about 3-4 weeks. We started giving him a sippy on his six month b-day also when he started solids. Next month when I start to wean him, I plan to give bottles of cow's milk for naps and bedtime until we separate the crib from our bed and I feel he's old enough to learn to put himself to sleep. Affter that, it'll just be sippies. Unles he's the type of baby who gets really attached to the bottle, then we'll just have to break him of it when he is no longer a baby.

Gabby is already transitioning to a sippy cup. We don't do bottles in bed or to put her to sleep so I'll probably wean her between 12-15 months like our Dentist recommends...
She is started on the sippy cup last month when she started shrieking when I drank from my water bottle, she is doing pretty well and only gets water in it since we probably won't do any juice for a couple years.

I've got a question too just for the sake of question asking. What brand of bottles did/do you use?
Timmy had Avent. They were a baby shower gift and I liked them better than the Walgreens ones we bought. They came highly recommended for breastfed babies too.
We used Circo from Target for Jimmy because we were afraid of Timmy getting jealous of Avent bottles, plus they were on sale. With the recent info on BPA in plastic bottles, my hubby is concerned about that, so we're getting Evenflo glass bottles from Amazon. They are only $1.54 for a 3 packs of 8oz. bottles.
Speaking of Timmy getting jealous of bottles, I have kind of a funny story. Jimmy was a few weeks old, and Timmy started whining when I gave Jimm a bottle. He kept saying, "baba" in a whiny almost crying voice. So, I got Timmy up on my lap and held him like I did before naps when he had his bottle, and I put it in his mouth. It was formula...LOL, the look on his face was so nasty, I almost died. I did warn him though and told him it was yucky, but he insisted. LOL! He jumped right down and started laughing and saying "yucky baba." Everytime I bottle-fed Jimmy after that, he would point to the bottle and say "yucky baba".

I used to use Avent bottles, but switched to Playtex nursers with liners. The playtex silicone nipples are very similar to avent nipples.
Health Canada has just declared BPA a "dangerous substance" and are on track to ban all baby products in Canada that contain BPA
From what I can understand, Medela bottles are still ok (they are the cloudy plastic type), and playtex liners and of course glass bottles.
Some people recommend stainless steel sippy cups, but they are about $20 each, so I'm just going to see what I can find that's "safe" plastic.
Wow Christina, only $1.54? Glass bottles here are expensive, like $20 for 2 or something like that.

Yeah, I was shocked at the price too. Even though the shipping is $9.99, it still makes it worth it. Amazon has some really good deals sometimes. Yolanda, is all the BPA stuff off the shelves? If it is, you can walk into any Wal*Mart or Target and get any sippy, since the safe ones would be the only ones left.

Some stores like Sears, walmart etc have voluntarily pulled stuff off the shelves, but the ban isn't in effect yet, I'm sure then all the stores will have to pull it.
I probably won't need many sippy cups, he doesn't seem to like them, he much prefers a glass-glass or plastic cup, with no covers/nipples/straws.

I don't know that we will switch to glass, but Gabby's Nuby bottles and sippy cups are already BPA free so I'm not that worried.
We mainly use Avent bottles, we have about 6 of those and 3 Nuby ones+2 Nuby sippy's.

All of medela's products are BPA free, even the new clear bottles. I think we are going to switch to the drop-in liners for the next few months. I am planning to stop using bottles when we go to whole milk (I hope it works to just use sippys) so I don't want to invest a lot in new bottles. We are also doing a lot of traveling and visiting over the next few week so I think the liners will make it easier. So now I have to find safe sippys or straw cups. Yolanda - yay for Chase using a real cup. I had some success with Bug and real cups but ever since he started playing with cups in the tub it is a real disaster!

So for anyone who uses powdered formula, do you make it by the bottle, or do you make your day's worth in a bigger container?
I have been making it in a large glass bottle for the day, but I am finding it really hard to get all the lumps out. Any secrets? Just keep shaking?

We make it by the bottle since she never uses the same amount in a day. When I was nannying we used one of those drink pitchers with the built in mixer, it kind of looks like a plunger with holes that you move up and down.

well, I don't make formula, but I do use powder to make things like powdered milk sometimes. The trick is to use a smaller container with a lid, put in the right amount of powder, and some of the water....mix it up by shaking, then put it in the larger container and add the right amount of water.
