Yeah Megan's parents were very neglectful. That's why they won't sue. They put their daughter in danger by letting her communicate with someone she or they didn't know and they allowed her on Myspace under age. To me that is unreal.

I doubt that is why they are not sueing. It is very emotional and difficult. The end result would not change the outcome of their daughter's suicide. Lawsuits usually keeps you in the pits of hell and when it is all over the attorney receives 50%. The families usually wishes they did not start down that road once they are finally at the end.

Where the parents are responsible is that they allowed their underage child to knowingly break the terms of service for Myspace. They more than likely don't have a leg legally in a civil case either.

Maybe they don't have a case against MySpace, but they probably do against the woman; however, the woman probably doesn't have any assets worth pursuing, and that's why a case probably won't be brought. Not because the parents are necessarily after money, but because there are not too many attorneys who would touch it without a potential pay off.

Whether the parents made a mistake or not, I hope other parents will learn something from this situation.

It is one of those unfortunate hard lessons that these parents learned. Because the parents broke the terms of service the deep pockets are off the hook and more than likely no lawyer will take this case unfortunately. It is a shame that the evil perps can't be criminally tried.

I just heard about this on the Today show and it just made me sick when I heard it was another parent! I'm in shock that a parent would do this. Did the parent that did this have mental issues?

The mayor of Dardenne Prairie has passed a law that will make cyberspace harrassment a crime in her city. Since the law is passed after this incident the woman can't be charged with anything.

The prosecuting attorney of St. Charles county is also reviewing the case. It still doesn't seem like there is anything they charge her with.

A good old fashioned shunning by all the citizens of the community would not be too harsh.

I think that is what is happening in their subdivision. The residents have said how they wish they move.

I didn't realize it at the time but we were looking to buy a new house this summer and two of them were in that subdivision. One would have been across the street from the Meiers and the other across the street from the Drews.

Megan's parents should sue in civl court, make the other parents liable for all court costs and their daughter's funeral, then require that they go on national television, admit what they did, and publically apologize. Then they should be banned from MySpace or any other internet forum forever.

Incidentally, since everyone in that town knows what happened, have the parents of the other girl or the girl herself been harassed or ostracized? I heard there were death threats against them and their daughter from all over the internet.

This whole thing is truly sad.

This story breaks my heart. It's yet another reason why I refuse to participate in the myspace epidemic. No offense to anyone who loves myspace, but I have read so many negative aspects about it. Why put your stuff out there for maniacs to prey upon? Let alone a parent. I pray for her, (the parent who caused such turmoil) but have to find the love that Jesus put in my heart for her because without Jesus, it wouldn't be there. This bears repeating: Children should not be on the internet.

Not that it's right, but they are getting a taste of their own medicine. Lots of lessons for parents in this.

While I am not an attorney, I doubt that no law was broken. Committing a act with a potential to grave consequences with no regard to these consequences has to fit within some form of manslaughter I would think.

I think we need to realize that it is NOT the fault of my space or technically the woman that wrote that message to this girl.

Now, let me be clear...I am NOT blaming the parents...but, this one message from a delusional woman is not what caused this girl to kill herself. It may have pushed her over the edge, but it was not the only thing going on in this young girls life. Obviously, since she was in therapy, there were other things going on with her. If a few comments from someone that she had only known for a month and had never actually met caused her to do something this drastic then she had to have had some severe mental issues that were not being addressed.

Also, I live close to this area and it was reported here that the parents of the girl that killed herself where friends with this woman and her family and were storing their pool table for them. When they found out what this woman had done, they chopped up the pool table and left it on the front lawn of this family. Does that sound sane?

Also, I think we need to remember that this woman is the one to make this mistake. To ostrasize the other members of her family is just wrong. Can you imagine what her daughter and other children are having to go through? Or for that matter this woman herself? I would hope that thoses posts on mypsace were just a moment of..I don't know..insanity...but this is something that this woman will have to live with for the rest of here life.

I think we all need to be praying for her!

The adult woman knew this kid was vulnerable and intentionally created a situation to exploit her vulnerabilities. She paid her employee to make posts to this troubled kid. She's not remorseful and has told the family to get over it. She even has a blog called Megan Had It Coming.

this one message
There was more than one message. This sick woman built an entire profile, complete with picture, for the sole purpose of crushing this little girl. She communicated back and forth a number of times, building the relationship to the point where the girl thought there was a real guy out there who liked her for who she was. Then she pulled the trigger and crushed what little self esteem the girl had. This woman knew the girl had psychological problems, and that she was in therapy, but that didn't stop her.

Sounds like the reaction of an extremely angry and emotionally overwrought parent whose child had been murdered. Would you have reacted any differently? Think hard before you say "yes". Think about how you'd feel if your only child had been torn from your life by a supposedly mature adult. Think about spending 13 years raising a girl beset by self esteem issues, only to have her spirit crushed by a jealous mother. Think about fighting to raise a child in a world she didn't believe she fit into, finally getting that child to feel a little better about herself, and then having that child manipulated by someone who knew exactly what she was doing. If you can say "yes", you would have reacted differently, then you're a much better person than I'll ever be. But I think if you do say yes, you're lying to us and to yourself.

Good post, Bill, and I agree completely. Trying to place blame on the parents or on the girl is just ludicrous. Most every one of us, as children and as parents, have all had our own issues to deal with. These parents were trying to help their child get past hers, and, according to what was reported, it was working . . . until someone calling herself an adult -- a friend, even! -- took matters into her own hand by setting this very vulnerable young girl up for a fall that most adults would struggle to recover from.

No, it's not the fault of My Space. But to exempt this woman from any culpability is just not right.

Lori Drew is the name of the woman who posed as a boy. It's on CNN's website and it's been outed. Mrs. Drew has received death threats.

I don't condone vigilante justice, but I have no compassion for what this woman did. As has been written here, this is an adult who knowingly deceived a child.

I must say Mrs. Drew is lucky she is American. In certain countries she would not escape criminal prosecution.

I for one hope she suffers a very great deal for this. Being shunned by the community? Being forced to move? That's peanuts compared to what the parents of the dead girl have felt and continue to feel.

The mother who created the fake myspace teenage boy has a blog called "Megan had it coming" and identified herself on it yesterday.

Here is an excerpt:

Instead, I worked with a couple of people I knew to create a profile so I could keep tabs on Megan. They helped me add pictures and graphics and music so it would look like a boy that Megan would want to talk to. We didn't totally know what we were doing with the Josh Evans persona, or where it would lead, so I kept it quiet. We did our best to shmooze Megan into opening up. I complimented her pictures and said how great she was. I very gently asked her about her school life and her friends hoping that if she was planning any attack on my daughter that we would be one step ahead of her and could take this evidence to her parents, show them what their daughter is up to so they would finally take action.

When I started to read the blog I expected to develop some understanding of Ms. Drew and appreciate her circumstances and not feel as angry toward her. But the opposite happened. She comes across as a self-absorbed, immature, manipulative, cold-hearted, .... well, you get the idea. I've got kids and have been through the emotional bullying. And, I fully realise that teenaged girls are EVIL (or can be). This woman operates with the mind-set of a spoiled 13 year-old.

This kind of thing underlines the importance of parents monitoring their children's internet usage, and having the computer in a common area of the house. Where the girl could have been watched.

Good assessment.

I alternately thought her sickening and silly.

It all seems so unbelievable, and even on the blog there were comments to the effect that maybe it wasn't Lori Drew who actually wrote the blog, but someone trying to make her sound worse that what she really is. So, I wasn't surprised to here her lawyer say on the news last night that she absolutely has no blog, so any of the internet blogs claiming to be her is NOT. However . . . I wonder . . . . the 'account' of what happened sure is detailed for it to have been made up entirely, but I guess that's possible.

I can understand how she would be upset about the bullying, if it really was taking place. No matter how much responders to her blog tried to make light of that, bullying is a nasty and destructive thing that really does go on in most schools -- or in this case, public forums, etc. It shouldn't. And I would hope that would eventually be addressed by an entity that would be willing to do something about it.

With all that said, tho, I don't understand how an adult could take things this far. It's just too sad -- and scary.

quote:

This kind of thing underlines the importance of parents monitoring their children's internet usage, and having the computer in a common area of the house. Where the girl could have been watched.

Amen to that. And I'd like to add the same for phones and TVs . . . It just seems to me that when a young 'adult' moves out of the house to live on their own is plenty early enough for them to have the 'privacy' of telephone converations with friends, or the 'right' to choose their own TV shows. I know with the advent of the cell phone, this is almost impossible to monitor, but I do think it's a mistake to just turn that cell phone loose on a young teenager or child and allow them to call, text and send photos at will.

Owell -- didn't mean to get off topic, but it just seems so part of the whole problem here with Megan and even Lori Drew's daughter -- that they were allowed access to MySpace without tight monitoring. I know Megan's mom said she kept a close eye on it, but how close could she watch what Megan was posting on other MySpaces? And in the blog it was told that Lori's daughter was upset about what Megan was posting about her -- if so, why didn't her mom simply delete the account? Too much unsupervised access. Too much unsupervised time.
