Sorry I"ve dropped off the face fo the earth! I've been busy and just not posting here. Read and caught up on everyone's running. Great job all!!! I'm still running. Focus now is on triathlon training. I did one three weeks ago and placed a disappointing 4th in my age group. I know I can do better... I'll race again next weekend. Ds1 did his second duathlon last weekend. He placed 2nd in his age group. He's doing very well. He's going to start working iwth my coach next week.

Wow! All those placements are great! And good for you about the triathlon training! My uncle did his first duathlon a while back and loved it!

Didn't run at all this weekend. I hiked a difficult trail with lots of uphill and verticals, and lots of rocks and roots. It took us 2 hours to get to nearly the end (6 km) but about 5 mins to the end, it got very dark and started raining. My daughter and I didn't think twice. We turned back. We were so scared of getting caught in the rain, and getting caught in the dark (we started the trail at 5 pm...not a good idea), that the panic drove us insane. I couldn't even remember any of the difficult parts (which is 75%) of the trail on the way back. We got lost once, but found our way. My daughter is such a trooper. It took us one hour to get back. That's how scared we were. Normal hikers take about 4 hours to complete the hike one way. There's nothing like fear to chop down 75% of our time, lol. And you know what I have a problem with? My daughter is fine, and I'm all sore all over. My legs muscles feels like jello and my joints are achy. We did another trail today that is not graded moderately difficult. Just 3 miles return. I feel like a really old lady right now. Why do things hurt? I'm in really good shape. Has anyone experience aches and pains because of age? I'm almost 40?

Thanks dear, you're a sweetheart, lol. Actually most people still think I'm in my upper 20s. It must be the running. So, don't ever stop and you'll look young all your life without surgery. LOL I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is affected by age. Sure shows a big difference between my daughter and I. We hiked a total of 11 miles this weekend, and she's fine while I'm whining big time about the aches and pains. I know with running, I don't get the same type of pain...mostly knee pain. But with the hike, it was definitely harder on my muscles and joints.

Almost 40? You're a child! I'll be 50 in November, and didn't start seriously running until I was 48. The funny thing is, though, that my ankles/feet/knees really don't hurt now that I'm doing it. The only aches and pains from age that I've got are my two shoulders (rotator cuffs are shot); the pain really started the day after I turned 40. And I wouldn't have guessed that you were in your late 30's, either, Prairiehiker. Good genetics, or just good skin care?

Almost 40 is nuthin'!!! I'll be 42 next week. Generally, I do not get terribly sore, just tired. Saturday, I ran 12miles, then did a 90min open water swim (windy, water very choppy). Yah, I was tired and felt like I had "done" something. BUt not sore. THen, yesterday I rode 70miles, again with wind. I finished feeling pretty drained, but still had stuff to do around the house. I slept well last night but I wouldn't say I'm sore today. It's COLD here todya! Only 62* and rainy. I was supposed to do an open water swim, but will chicken out and hit the fishbowl.

I'm 37 and I get aches in my lower legs and occasionally in my right knee. If I'm doing any other activity besides running, though, I ache all over! It's either age or I'm not nearly in as good a shape as I think I am I don't get aches at all after my runs. Last long run that I did was 11 miles but I was fine except for my knee really hurt after that. I just wasn't ready for it since I'm just coming out of an injury. But the muscle aches from this morning was bad even though the hike that we did was last Saturday and a brief 4 k on Sunday. Here's the pics of the hike. The trail was really difficult. I couldnt' even take pictures in some areas because I had to be in all 4s. I'm using this to train for our big hiking trip in BC where we're also trying downhill mountain biking, LOL. our mother/daughter hike That's my daughter in the pic...and me without make up. We camped out for the weekend and had a blast.

Kristin - How do you check your pacing? By counting footfalls per 30 seconds, or what?

I should add that I used to run track (sprints though), so that training helped me a lot in terms of gaging if I'm keeping a steady pace or not.

My group leader taught me that I should count the number of times my left foot strikes in 30 seconds, then multiply by 2 to get my cadence. Ideally, I should be running at a count of 40-42 foot strikes every 30 seconds. Sometimes I'm below that, but basically that's where I'm at. Duane

Some questions for you guys. Does your appetite increase when you run more miles? mine does big time. Do you get depressed when you can't run? I did when I was off running for about 8 months and couldn't do anything else as my legs were not functioning. Do you enjoy other activities as much as running? I do like hiking, skiing, rock climbing, cycling, but I have such loyalty to running. How often do you run and if you miss a run, do you feel a little off? Not so much now, but I used to. Although now when I can't run, I have to substitute something. How important for you to have a runner as your mate? Not that important for me, but I'd like someone who's equally active like me. I enjoy doing a lot of things.

I'm trying to switch it up more now with long bike rides and such. I still workout about 5-6 days per week. I don't do well when I take more than a day off. Everything feels much harder and I usually don't "feel" the best after a workout following too much time off. Sometimes, I'll just shorten my run just to get at least something in rather than doing nothing. Days I do nothing, I usually am very squirmy all day! I know what you mean by everything being much harder on my body. Maybe it's because I've over worked my body since I was yound that every thing is worn out. When I was in my 20s, I used to run 7 miles a day. Last year, I was doing 40-50 miles a week and much faster, but I got injured. Now I'm down to between 15-25 miles and have slowed down quite a lot. I am forcing myself to take a day off from working out, but I can't seem to. Even if I don't run or bike, I do yoga or pilates. I do them 3 to 5 times a week, plus running, and bike only once a week. Summer, I do a lot of hikes, but with gas prices being so high, I don't want to spend $100 just driving to a trail. When I think about how much time I spend working out, I think it's insane. I ask those questions because I thought I might have some sort of unhealthy addiction to physical activities. I don't think you guys are much different from me, so I feel a little better being normal.

Some questions for you guys. Does your appetite increase when you run more miles? havent ran that far yet, but when I start an exercise routine it tends to increase Do you get depressed when you can't run? a little Do you enjoy other activities as much as running? spin class, yoga How often do you run and if you miss a run, do you feel a little off? was 2-3 times a week trying to get back into it. How important for you to have a runner as your mate? Doesn't have to be a runner, but wants someone who will try to stay in shape somehow. Would be nice to bike with , walk, etc.

Appetite increase--Oh yah!!! I've always been a big eater! The reason I continue to work out is so that I can continue to eat. Running itself doesn't make me hungry. I will finish a swim starving. When I ride to the beach (12miles), then swim, I always have a snack ready for before the ride home. Yes, I get depressed when I can't run. It's the endorphines. I had a stress fracture in my foot over the winter. I continued bicycling and swimming, but it wasn't the same. When I went to the doctor for my foot, I asked him for Zoloft because I knew I'd never make it without it. Mind you, this was three weeks before a marathon, so there was that let down, too. Other activities--I'm a triathlete! So, swim, bike, run. Other than that, cooking and gardening. But being active is my favorite! Missing a run--I'm working with a coach, so when I miss a workout, I feel like I'm letting my coach down. If I can't get the posted workout done, I will try to do something. For example, two weeks ago my coach had me down for a 3hr ride. Well, my son raced that morning, and by the time that we got home there were storms. No way could I get a ride in. So I went for a short but intense 4mile run. Then made up the ride the next day. My husband is not into physical fitness. This causes huge conflicts. He was active when we met, but over the years has gotten away from it. I have gotten more active over the years. No run this morning. Just a short 16mile ride. This is an easy week for me as I am doing a triathlon (olympic distance) this weekend.

Does your appetite increase when you run more miles? I've not gone beyond the 3 mile barrier yet, but because I've got a large appetite anyway, I'll need to watch out when I do. Thank God for Weight Watchers group meetings to keep me honest! Do you get depressed when you can't run? It bothered the snockers out of me when my hammies and quads got tweaked last fall and I couldn't do anything from late October until April. Do you enjoy other activities as much as running? Not really, unless you count walking during a round of golf. How often do you run and if you miss a run, do you feel a little off? Yep! If I miss a day's workout in my schedule, I feel really bad about it. Not to mention that I have trouble on the next workout. How important for you to have a runner as your mate? Mary's a walker, not a runner, so it doesn't really bother me. She's become a huge supporter of my efforts, and that is all that matters to me. Last night was my final pre-race workout and it went really well. I only had to do 2 miles (Strange how that slips so lightly off the tongue now!), so I tried to keep the pace slow, but I ended up doing it fairly fast. After my first 2 laps, I stopped to pop my back over the bleachers, then stopped again after the next one to let a friend (who's injured and can't run with us until spring) to massage the area until it completely popped. I ran the next lap fairly easy, then tried a new tactic: I walked one quarter of a lap, sprinted a quarter, then repeated the sequence. My last 3 laps were a run/walk/run combination, with the last lap being done at a faster pace than normal. I was just seeing what my body would allow me to get away with, and was surprised by the results. This morning, the only thing sore is my left shoulder, but that's from a trashed rotator cuff that I've had for several years. Therapy hasn't helped, so surgery is my next alternative (except for divine healing!). But with my mom's health problems and my father-in-law's needs, I can't afford to get it done right now. So I'll just take my Extra-Strength Tylenol and rub it down with Vanishing Scent Ben-Gay, then grin and bear it. I'll be sure to let y'all know on Friday how the race turned out. Duane
