Speaking of...who has races coming up? I have the 5K June 19 and possibly a mile race in early August.

Great job Duane - even if it wasn't a sub-40 time, you still blew away your previous time and that's something to be proud of! Ok can you please fill me in, Are you talking 5km in 40 mins? quote:
I've been steadily increasing mileage, but I'm still holding steady between an 11:30 and 12:00 pace. Hopefully I can get sub-40:00 myself. I am not very technically minded (in fact my logic IQ is below average), can you please tell me what this means? I do 5km in 30 or sometimes 25 or 20 even and I always thought that was slow. Did 14kms in 1:30 and I think that was slow, in fact I stopped for a toilet break and a drink that time. My father would've ran faster than me (though he was an olympian so I guess he was not "normal") and there was older people running faster as well so I am confused. Can you please explain? I have only started running the past few yrs. I haven't really got anyone to compare with so I don't really know what time others run in.

I am not very technically minded (in fact my logic IQ is below average), can you please tell me what this means? It means it takes me between 11:30 and 12:00 to run one mile. A 12:00 pace would mean a 40:00 5K.

OK, Giulia, to answer your first question; Yes, it's my hope to get my time down to less than 40 minutes for 5K (3.1 miles). And concerning the second matter, an 11:30 to 12:00 pace means that you're running a mile between 11 minutes 30 seconds and 12 minutes. If you can do 5K in 30 minutes, even as fast as 25 or 20 minutes, then you're doing just fine. A 30:00 time for that distance translates to just under 10:00 per mile, while 25:00 is around 8:15 per mile and 20:00 is just a shade over 6:00 per mile. That last time is flying, my sister! Absolutely tremendous! As for having someone to compare yourself to - don't. That is where you can get discouraged rather quickly. Comparing yourself to others in running, or the Christian life, is a sure-fire route to giving up. The Lord had to break me of that habit in my walk with Him, because I couldn't. Blessedly, I've not tried to compare my times to others since I took up running last year. The only person that I compare myself to is . . . me! And if I can beat me every time, I'm doing well. Thanks, Stella and Kristin, for the words of encouragement! Stella, I'll be howling for you here in WV. Hope ya' got good ears! And as for races, I've got 2 coming in the future: Aug. 30th is the Charleston Distance Run 5K, and I'll also be running in the Marshall Alumni 5K on Nov. 2nd. Those are my only ones left for this year. Duane

I have only started running the past few yrs. I haven't really got anyone to compare with so I don't really know what time others run in. My personal best is 26:52 for a 5K and I'm very proud of myself for that so I don't consider that slow at all! Seriously though, we have a lot of serious runners in my area and the race I ran in March, if you got 20 minutes, you would have placed 1st or 2nd for all women and in the top ten overall (men and women). My time placed me 9th for women in their 30s and 20th for all women. (and this was a race with hundreds and hundreds of runners). My uncle ran it in 19:02 and he placed 3rd overall. And he was seriously booking! Basically you will find that in these huge races, it's not so much about competition though. The top runners compete, but most folks are there just to have fun and do what's great for them. Unless you are a competitive runner, your biggest competitor should be yourself. So, it really doesn't matter what your time is, but rather did you meet your goals. For some, it may be as simple as just completing the run (when I started out that's what my goal was!)! For others, it may be a set time. For others it may be something else entirely. You need to find what will motivate you to do your best - not what works for someone else!

I'll cheer you guys on. I love watching a race or a marathon. People really appreciates the cheers from the sidelines. I volunteered in our last marathon, and had an opportunity to see an 81 year old runner. I cheered him all the way through. I literally had tears in my eyes. Things like that inspires me. Prior to getting injured, I was doing 5 K at under 25 mins. I don’t have a competitive streak, but I was into doing my personal best to the point where I was logging in my shoe mileage, my daily, weekly, monthly mileage. If I ran an 8 min/mile yesterday, I beat that by a few seconds the next day. I kept doing that, until I got injured. My knee just gave up. After 8 months of just sitting around doing nothing, I can finally run again, and the old habit is beginning to show. I think I’ll get injured again if I don’t change. I went from 15 min mile to 10 min mile in less than 2 months and my knees are feeling it. So, I’m throwing away the log book, and just running because I thoroughly enjoy it. I’m increasing my mileage and time, but very very minimal. I’d rather run slow than get injured again. Though I’m in good shape, I am not 18 years old anymore, and my body complains with aches and pains when I over do things. Having said all that, I still have a goal of doing 5 miles a day on average (I’m at 4.5 now) and hopefully running a marathon next year….just for fun. Competition chokes me. I did come in third in a half marathon once for my age (I was in my late 20s) but I doubt I’d be able to do that again in my 30’s or early 40s. I think my body is just not made to take all the physical abuse of training.

The people I train with and fight with are younger than me and they do comps. I am slower than them when I run and when I did my instructors course the guys were doing push ups at the top of the hill till I got there. They didn't do as much training as I was doing so I really thought I was very slow! It is encouraging to know ! quote:

I am getting stronger and fitter with age !God is good!

Since we're talking about races and posting pictures (or links to pix), I thought I'd give you a chance to see what I look like. WARNING: What you are about to see could cause permanent eye damage, or mental shock, from seeing my face. Proceed at your own risk to http://iplayoutside.smugmug.com/gallery/5353978_KjxTf#327549232_yQWsq You'll have to go throught the Gallery and search for the individual photos. Sorry, but they didn't give a way to go to each one directly. Look for Photo #s 42, 106, and 140. If you decide to look at all of the shots and see a bunch of people with the same shirt as mine, that's my running group. We're known as the Akentannos Athletic Club. Akentannos is a traditional greeting on the island of Sardinia, and it means "May you live 100 years." Matt, our group founder/leader, thought it was a neat thought, especially when you consider that living to be 100 as a Christian means you've got a lot of years to serve the Lord. Think of the difference you could make if that were to happen! Duane

Duane--describe your running clothes...the way they put pictures in there is kind of weird.

My shirt is white, short-sleeved, and has a black picture on the front. It's in the shape of a mountain. And my shorts are black. Page 5 of the Gallery is where you'll find #42. It's in the second row, on the right hand side, and I'm on the left hand side of the shot. #106 is on Page 12, left side of row 3, and is only of me. And you said you'd found #140, so I won't tell you where to look for it. BTW, Giulia, thanks for the compliment. I know that I'm not ugly, but it's just that I like to kid about my looks. Duane

Good Job! I think I am going to go to spin class today. Then I might try running again tomorrow depending on how sore I am. or the pool cause every time I plan to go to the pool it rains.

Anyone have tips on running in humidity? I did okay last night, but our humidity is really high right now and it typically isn't. I felt like I couldn't get a good breath, and of course, it was hard to stay cool.

Running in humidity--realize that your times will be slower! Go early/late in the day. DRINK! And realize that you will go slower than usual. I ended up doign tomorrow's long run today. Conditions were perfect, only 68* at 6:30. My legs weren't totally fresh, but not too beat up either. The run felt good, but my numbers are much slower than I expected. 11.2m, 1:41, 9:02pace. I have a half marathon in two weeks and had hoped to break 1:50. With these numbers, I'm not sure that's possible.

It got pretty windy yesterday which whipped up dirt and pollen so I had a hard time crawling out of bed this morning - all congested and tired. However, I finally did because I knew I'd regret not doing something so I did my normal situps & pushups, then went out and ran sprints/jogs for 1 mile. OK, the sprints were slow, but it still felt better than nothing.
