Naw... I didn't have that great of a day. I finished, just well over 4hrs. Oh well, I can accept it. Here's a link to my race report on my running forum. *warning* there are no TOS there. http://www.kickrunners.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1115800#post1115800

We're very proud of you, and yes, it sucks to feel bad on a big race day! I'm glad you told that smoker your opinion. I ran through a cloud of smoke during my two-mile race and thought I was going to puke. Couldn't stop, though, to tell the guy what I thought of him smoking. Is your medal cool? How many marathons have you done? I don't know if I've ever asked.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm offended by most smells and poor air quality during any run. Like, normally the smell of someone cooking out would make me hungry, but if I'm running it grosses me out. Same with chemical smells, car exhaust, dust, etc.

Thanks guys! This was marathon #6. I emailed my doctor. He's a runner and I knew him first as a runner, then as a doctor. He assured me that there was nothing I could have done differently on race day. When you are sick, you are sick. He said that he suffered a similar fate at Chicago and was forced to DNF. Recovery is going well. I went for a bike ride yesterday and that felt really good. This morning I went for a swim. Tomorrow I might go for a very short 2m run at the track with ds3. Eventually I'll get back at it. My next marathon is in April.

Great job to finish your marathon, His chosen! And even greater about letting the smoker have it! I can tolerate a pipe smoker when my lungs aren't hurting, but if they're irritated? NO BLOOMIN' WAY!! I'd have done the same thing as you. Mom had the mastectomy yesterday and came through it all right. The surgeon did have to remove some of her lymph nodes; he said that they were enlarged, but we won't know for several days if that means cancer or not. I'm just praying that it isn't. Running has taken a back seat to everything else lately, although I'm going to attempt to go this evening. If Mom is released from the hospital, though, that's not gonna happen. It's getting dark a lot earlier around here, which means the cemetery is closing much sooner. And the middle school track where I've done a lot of my training doesn't leave the lights on for runners/walkers, although the football team does practice late on occasion. I may end up back there sometimes, or on the treadmill at the "Y" - we'll see. Gotta go! Duane

It sounded from your race report that you did everything you could do. And the fact that you finished...well, most people would have given up. We had some people from here run Chicago, but I haven't heard a thing yet about how they did.

Duane--glad to hear your mom's surgery went well and praying that will be the end of it. It is harder as the sun sets earlier to get a good run in. I'm having to run immediately after work.

Duane--hang in there. My mom also had to ahve a mastectomy with lymphnodes. She then had chemo and radiation. She is now a one year survivor. I wore a pink ribbon t-shirt for my marathon in her honor.

My running bra finally arrived, so I can seriously begin training. Y'all think I can be ready for the 15K my boss's wife committed me to by Saturday????????? I hope she's not too disappointed that I'll be walking probably 3/4 of it (fortunately, they welcome walkers as well).

monamie--You can do it! Start out at a very slow jog and keep at it. Walk the aid statons, then start running before the cups end. If you do end up walking, pick a spot where you will start running again--a certain tree, sign, etc--and not when you "feel up to it". You'll do great! I did my first post-marathon run this morning. Ds3 wanted to run, so we went to the track. I did a very easy 3 miles. My legs were dead at the start, but no more dead when I finished. Dah, we're getting there!

I know. I thought of that. And if it had been only one time, I would have blown it off. I've been chased by several dogs, but none has ever acted aggressively beyond barking and I've never seen any of the other dogs more than once. This biting into my shoe is completely unacceptable and the fact that it happens repeatedly...well, we have a leash law and it's against the law to let your dog run around.

Thank you for the encouragement. Actually, I read a book on the Alexander Technique (which I have been studying anyway) and running, and I'm glad I hadn't developed bad habits before trying this. When I used what I had already learned about the technique and applied it to running, it made it almost effortless...........except that I was so focused on my form and listening to my body that I was forgetting to breathe. That's kind of important. But I think using the tools I have learned, I may get through at least part of the race. I will cross the finish line, though.

I went for a hard bike ride with ds1 this afternoon. It felt good, but I wish I could have run!
