Status: online 		We have three bedrooms I want to work with right now. We also have a small room which we have made our closet and storage room, but would work for a crib or toddler bed if it didn't have our stuff in it. We also have another full size bedroom that does not have heat or overhead lighting in it. If we buy the house, we will make that bedroom workable, but then whoever has that room will have to go through our room to get to it, which I don't like, unless we make that one ours maybe?? This is an old house with room after room. Only the boys' bedroom has one direct access. The other rooms, you walk into Levi's room, with the small room/big closet to the left. Straight ahead is our room, with the bathroom to the left of that. Straight ahead of that is the unheated bedroom, which also has a door into the bathroom. Doors, doors, everywhere... Brian would like to make one main hallway and move the bathroom so only our room accesses it, but that will be an awful lot of work to do.

Status: offline 		we have not had a fun evening. One of our kittens started acting weird today...wobbling around (it couldn't walk good anyway yet, but this was more then normal) then acting like it was blind...calling out to the others and the momma cat to find them. I picked it up to hold it and have no clue what happened to it, but it ended up dying there in my arms. It was one of the orange ones. The other orange one is acting weird too...won't eat. Paul went to the store and got a kitten bottle so we could try to feed it that way, but so far no luck. He doesn't think it will last through the night. Then I think Emma hurt the leg of one of the black ones. We can't tell for sure...but will probably end up having to go to the vet tomorrow to find out. I think she might have a dislocated back leg...she is dragging it and started right after I fussed at Emma to leave it alone, and she wasn't like that before that.
Anyway...not a fun night. Kids are upset about the kitten dying...and upset about the others now too. Momma cat is driving us crazy...Paul has had to get up three times from bed when I was putting Jack to sleep to stop her from moving them to Jake's room on the other side of the house. I have a feeling tomorrow is not going to be much fun either.

Sounds like FIV or FIP in the little orange ones.. and unfortunately almost always fatal.

The black one.. did Emma pull on its leg? We just had a little girl do that to her 6 month old kitten and we had to take the head of the femur off, when she pulled she cracked the femoral head.. and it died, kitten does fine now and you wouldn't know he doesn't have the head to his femur :) Best to get little ones checked out tomorrow.

I don't know what she did exactly. It was running around all fine, and we were trying to keep the kids out of here. I found her in here with is up in one of her doll blankets...I fussed at her to put it down, and next thing I know it was dragging that one leg when it was scooting across the floor. I think for sure we will have to get it checked out tomorrow...but we really can't afford anything. This is our short pay check during the month. So there's really not much to put towards a vet bill right now.

when I was 16 my cat had a window fall on her leg and she ended up with pins in her leg...very expensive. It took me almost a year to pay that off (I was only working part time and also had to pay insurance every month)

Status: offline 		when Paul got up for PT the other orange one was still alive...but by the time he got back it was dead too.

now we just have to take the black one to a vet and see what they say about it's back leg. Do you think they will tell us to put her down because of it?

Status: offline 		Not likely unless it's a severe break or nerve trauma that cannot be corrected.

IF it's nerve trauma you may be looking at amputation after a few weeks of trying to restart those nerves.

IF it's broken, you can't afford sx now, ask for splinting it and seeing if nature can heal it on it's own.

More than likely they will need to take xrays and if the femur head is dead or damaged you are looking at sx down the line.

They may offer to put it down to take the burden off you guys. Ask them if there are any organizations that can help with costs of health for him, like the ASPCA or some private group.

Is the mother cat vaccinated? Are there any other cats that come around that you don't know that could contact mother cat and or kittens? I'm trying to think of what could have killed the little ones and FIP Feline Infectious Peritonitis is my first thought but is uncommon in kittens that young unless exposed to an unvaccinated cat. Failure to thrive would be the main diagnosis if unable to do labwork. Sad to say kittens die and we don't always know why. Heart conditions, GI conditions etc.. things we can't see without tremendous diagnostics.

I'm sorry the kids are having to go through this.

Until you find out what is going on I would quarantine the kittens and mom, NO human contact except an older person, over 12 but under 65, if you weren't pregnant I'd say you but you really also need to watch your interaction with them as well. Wash hands and no face to face contact for ANYONE.

would that cause their eyes to have yuck stuff in them all the time? I mean, it's usual for kittens to have eye gunk, but these two orange ones it was overdone majorly. We were constantly having to wipe their eyes out with a warm cloth.

We are very careful of who is around them and how we hold them...and washing hands obsessively. The kids are not allowed to be around them...that's why I fussed at Emma when she snuck in here...she was supposed to be with Paul getting ready for bed. She really doesn't like the kids to be around them...except Jack (he's the baby...17mo). She purposely brings them to his lap...don't know why...she is really attached to him. She didn't act anything like that with the last litter...just this one. Started doing that when they were about two weeks old or so. It was weird. I have never seen a cat do that before.

I wonder if the momma cat knew those two would die, because about a week ago she seemed to keep putting them away from the other three.

Status: offline 		I got an appointment for this afternoon at 2:45 to have the black kitten seen. the vet app is $30 and goes up for other things and meds...and x-rays, if they need any, would be $75...all has to be paid upon service....that's not as bad as I thought it would be though. When my cat back in high school had to get x-rays, it was closer to $300

it won't eat...and is getting very weak...so I have a feeling we will end up not having her by the end of the day. Unless she is just in so much pain that she can't/won't nurse. Either way, it's not good. This is the one that we would have chosen to keep if we could only choose one to keep.

Status: offline 		well, got back from the vet. Kitten #3 died while we were about to leave there. it's body temp was very very low and since it wasn't eating the blood sugar was very low. The dr found three or four broken ribs and wasn't sure without an x-ray if it was a leg problem or a pelvis fracture. They were going to send us home for the night to see if we could get the body temp and blood sugar up then tomorrow try to do an x-ray. I was signing the sales slip when the nurse noticed that the kitten had stopped breathing.

so now we are down to two kittens out of five.

the other two died because they were sick or something. I am not sure....the vet said since the momma cat was pulling them away up to a week ago it could have (more then likely was) a failure to thrive thing with them. She said that's what they would call it on their records.

no, she doesn't think it is something the others can get...she did say make sure to wash everything just in case (and in hot water)...but she wasn't too concerned with it.

paul empties it out twice a week...night before trash days. It gets scooped out every night by he and Jake...usually. I was kicked out of that job many years ago...when I got pregnant the first time...and have never gone back (mostly because my sense of smell changed then and it was never the same....and I get sick way too easily whether I am pregnant or not now)

Status: offline 		So I asked my boss today what he would assume just based on what I knew. His first thought was failure to thrive, or as we call it, Fading Kitten Syndrome. Where they just aren't healthy and mom pushes them out and they "fade" away.

I'm sorry about #3.. what a rough couple of days for you guys..

Status: offline 		the kids are doing pretty good. Emma doesn't even understand....Hannah isn't really an animal person (oh if you only knew how much she hates animals)...Jake is doing good today so far. He is playing with one of the older cats more though.

the vet yesterday said failure to thrive sounded like her diagnosis for the two orange ones too
