Happy New Year and welcome to the 2008 SS Book Exchange!!

This will be the official sign-up and survey thread for the book exchange.
Sandy (blessedmamaofmany) and I will be co-running this one.

Requirements:
Be at least a Senior Member (500 posts or more)
Have been a regular poster for at least 4 months.
This is for everyone's comfort since addresses will be exchanged. Exceptions will be considered on an individual basis (PM Sandy or I).

Please PM your name, mailing address, phone number, e-mail, and username to uponeagleswings (me) or blessedmamaofmany (Sandy). The e-mail and phone
number will only be used if you disappear and we have to track you down.

Timeline:
Sign up will be from today (January 1) until January 28th (Monday). Names will go out on Feb 1 and you will have until Feb 29th to mail your package.

We are keeping with the simpler format that we have been using. In the past there have been ladies who could not participate for financial reasons, so we are trying to keep costs as reasonable as possible. Since our goal is to have fun and make friends, the following guidelines apply:

*This will be a book exchange. You should plan to mail out at least 1 book that you think your SS would like, and to receive 1 book (and sisterhood, and prayers).
*Books do not necessarily have to be Christian. If you really love cookbooks, books of photography, or chick lit, put that in your survey.
*Previously loved books are great!! If you have a book on your shelf that you think your SS would love, pass it along!
*If you don't have any books you think your SS would like, feel free to either go to www.half.com, or the Goodwill to find a book for her.
*As far as I am aware, the most affordable way to ship books is usually by media mail.

We have changed the survey to match the exchange, so here is the new survey. Please post your answers in this thread after you PM Sandy or me.

What are your favorite genres/types of books?
Who are your favorite authors- do you own all of their books?
Are there any other authors you'd like to try?
Are there any specific titles you've been eyeing up?
Any special considerations (ie someone who needs large print books)?
And of course...
How can your SS (and the rest of us) pray for you?

What are your favorite genres/types of books?
I love interesting books that are also educational. I am now reading "The Earth Dwellers" about ants. I also love classic romance from the 1800s ... I have all of the Austen and Bronte books, for example. I just ordered John Henry's books.

Who are your favorite authors- do you own all of their books?

For the most part, I own all of the books of my favorite authors.

Are there any other authors you'd like to try?
I don't have many good Christian books.

Are there any specific titles you've been eyeing up?
Here is my current BN wishlist:

Pilgrim's Progress
John Bunyan

The Samurai's Garden
Gail Tsukiyama

Leaving Mother Lake: A Girlhood at the Edge of the World
Yang Erche Namu, Christine Mathieu

The Arabian Nights (Barnes & Noble Classics Series)
Anonymous, Noted by Muhsin Al-Musawi, George Stade

Mary Queen of Scotland and the Isles
Margaret George, Margaret George (Afterword)

The Catcher in the Rye
J. D. Salinger

Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China
Jung Chang

Any special considerations (ie someone who needs large print books)?

And of course...
How can your SS (and the rest of us) pray for you?

That my husband, John, be saved in 2008!!!!!

What are your favorite genres/types of books?
I love books on the family, God, and True Crime. (yes I know the last one doesn't fit with the others.)

Who are your favorite authors- do you own all of their books?
Idon't own many books and have no favorite authors because I use the library or exchange with friends.

Are there any other authors you'd like to try?
Again, I don't really care about the author.

Are there any specific titles you've been eyeing up?
Not really.

Any special considerations (ie someone who needs large print books)?
None for me

And of course...
How can your SS (and the rest of us) pray for you?
My prayers this time are for me. I need to be able to get myself out of this depression and get rid of the anxiety that is beginning to rule my life again. And of course prayers for my family.

Tracy, I am a true crime junky! I used to read it, now I tune into A&E. I don't really have many true crime books...

What are your favorite genres/types of books?

I love books. I read a lot of Chick Lit, Biographies and History books, but I'm also known to read anything off of the bestseller list, fiction or non-fiction.

I do not like sci-fi, fantasy, and I'm not that big into historical fiction (strange.)

Who are your favorite authors- do you own all of their books?

Sophie Kinsella, Marian Keyes. I own all of Sophie Kinsellas, and get Marian Keyes books from the library. I like Alexander McCall Smith's series "The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency" and I own them as well.

Are there any other authors you'd like to try?

I've been looking for Christian chick lit authors. I've read Kristin Billerbeck, Meredith Efkin and Judy Baer so far and have been very impressed.

Are there any specific titles you've been eyeing up?

Nothing I haven't already requested from the library!

Any special considerations (ie someone who needs large print books)?
No.

And of course...
How can your SS (and the rest of us) pray for you?

Prayer for my husband and his job situation would be nice. He is certified to be a teacher but it's hard to get a teaching job in our area. This is his third year of applying for jobs and it's been tough on us financially but especially tough on him emotionally.

I guess I'd better do this survey- I almost forgot to add myself to my list of addresses.

What are your favorite genres/types of books? Most kinds of general fiction, some mysteries (not big on chick lit or romance), books that will teach me something/make me think about something new. Nonfiction, but not a big fan of biographies. In the library or bookstore I tend to pick up whatever looks interesting.

Who are your favorite authors- do you own all of their books? Francine Rivers- I've read Redeeming Love and As the Shofar Blows; The Thoenes, although I gave up halfway through the series I was reading. It's a hard question- I love to read a wide variety of books. I'm not a Jodi Piccoult fan though.

Are there any other authors you'd like to try? None I can think of.

Are there any specific titles you've been eyeing up? For One More Day- Mitch Albom; I'd love a copy of The Little Prince (in english, my french has suffered since high school); The Virgin of Small Plains- Nancy Picard, pretty much anything that looks interesting.

Any special considerations (ie someone who needs large print books)? None for me.

And of course...

How can your SS (and the rest of us) pray for you? Patience with God's timing for everything in our lives, for my DH who is still in school and very anxious to finish.

Yay, books! Books! Books! Books!

What are your favorite genres/types of books?

Truthfully? Dilbert cartoon books, Calvin & Hobbes, Christian fiction, books by W.E.B. Griffin (WW2 fiction books), some books by Tom Clancy, books on healthy eating, dieting, diabetes, cats, dogs, home decor.

Who are your favorite authors- do you own all of their books?

See above. (And yep, I own almost everything by the authors I listed)

Are there any other authors you'd like to try? I'm open ... but I don't like mysteries or crime novels. (or science fiction)

Are there any specific titles you've been eyeing up? Nope, I'm open.

Any special considerations (ie someone who needs large print books)? Nope.

And of course...

How can your SS (and the rest of us) pray for you?

1. Continued success on my ongoing healthy eating/weight loss journey (70 pounds down, 50 to go)
2. Safety and job security (and promotion) for my DH (active duty military)
3. For us to "get back on track, financially" ... and to get our savings boosted
4. For me to find the right job (PT or FT ... whichever would be best for me/pleasing to God)
5. For continued improvement with my diabetes, anxiety, depression, PTSD, asthma, triglycerides
6. For a true desire to exercise MORE

I don't think I am going to participate this time. Things are just too tight right now and I don't think I want to part with any of my books: I red them over and over and over again. However, I'm enjoying seeing what others like reading.

I got a bunch of books this summer at a used book sale and haven't quite finished reading them. I go on the last day when you get a bag full for $1 or something like that. I had more books than the kids and I could carry (a volunteer helped bring them to the car) and spent less than $10. Some of them were for the kids and some for me.

I've never done a Secret Sister thing before and I have a question...doesn't the postmark give away where it is coming from? Or do we let them know who gave it to them with the gift?

The postmark will give the general area (if people check it), but not everyone knows where everyone else lives. If you mean the return address, I have sent packages off with no return address and not had a problem with the post office.
Part of the fun is guessing who your SS is, so no, try not to make it obvious when you mail the package.
