Colton seems like a sweet kid.
I too thought the kissless boy should have been let through. I do think it's odd that he finds that his crowning acheivement and tells everyone he meets about it. I wonder if the judges were turned off by it and didn't let him through for that reason.

I wouldn't want their jobs either, but keep in mind, Randy, Paula & Simon only see a small fraction of those thousands. The vast majority don't get past the first set of producers, and then I believe there's another round or 2 of "next level" producers before you actually get in to see the Big 3.
The higher levels of auditions, and going before R-P-S are also on totally different days, and at a different venue (usually a hotel) than the big stadium that held the thousands. They just edit it to look like it's all happening at once.
For those people who can't sing but really think they can, it's not a surprise when they freak out because they think they passed the first 2-3 "auditions" because they're GOOD ... and then if R-P-S say they're no good (or just Simon!), they decide that THEY don't know what they're talking about. In their mind, they've just had several music "experts" affirm them!

I don't understand why the young man that hadn't kissed a girl didn't get through yet the Janis Joplin girl did....
The band Colton is in also does the p&w at their church (unless things have changed since the last time I visited with his mom). He's from a Christian family. His grandpa is the preacher that married hubby and I (and his mom was my maid of honor).

I don't know that he'll make it very far, but there was something really likable about Drew, the farmer. Maybe it's my country sensibilities, but I can't help cheering for the "average people", coming down off their tractors to audition ... much more endearing than those come in cocky and talking about being a star.

They shouldn't let obviously mentally ill persons through to R P and S. If AI wants to show some of the more bizarre auditions they should film some of the preliminary auditions. AI shouldn't feed into psychosis.

well, the entertainment value isn't seeing some 20 year old producer's reaction to a poor singer, it's in seeing Simon, Paula and Randy's reaction.
This is why I hate this show...it's just so rigged.
i've only ever seen bits and pieces and I've never seen a complete show, however, I do visit another website regularly during "idol season" and they tell you which is the worst singer, and how to vote for them. I always call and vote for the worst person....not that your vote counts anyway, but that's what I do.
although, apparently it worked for taylor hicks....though sadly, not for sanjaya.

I agree. There are some that are just funny but the psychotic auditions are disturbing, they're not funny and not amusing at all.

I never got the point of that. I don't vote at all, either way, but I can't see the point of trying to vote for someone who is awful. Why do people even care if they aren't wanting to see someone with real talent win?

3. because the voting system is a flawed system. you should be able to vote once per household, per phone number....but you can vote as many times as you can hit redial. there is just something that is not fair about that.
4. if the talent is so 'awful', then how did they make it to the show in the first place? it seems that they are planted there to give a path to a clear winner, or a clear path to a top 10...weed out the ones that aren't so good so the ones that Simon thinks have marketability are in the top 10....
5. again, because it's fun....and it also makes die hard fans angry.

I think this must be the case, but I just wonder how some people get through, do you think it's strictly for the entertainment? Maybe they tell them, "OK, you're not going to make it, but we'll let you through just for the laugh".

I personally think that's the reason, he was better than some that they let through to Hollywood (IMHO).
I'm just glad they showed us some of the people who could sing, the Tuesday night show was mainly full of non-singers.

I'm sorry, I don't see the fun factor in it. I don't see the 'hating the show so I'll vote the worst idol' nothing but just showing immaturity. If someone could careless about what goes on then don't watch the show, plain and simple. But to be a part of the craziness like vote for the worst...it's just very strange to me.

i already said that I don't watch the show, so I don't watch it...but I also don't want a superficial television show telling me which person is acceptable to be an American Idol when I don't agree with them. So, I go against the herd mentality and vote for the person that the producers and money makers of the show DON'T want me to vote for.
call me immature if you wanna....i'm still voting for the worst.

Well, if you really think about it, the show is asking people to vote on who they like best...not who the best singer is. The judges are taking looks and style into consideration, but mainly basing their decisions on vocal quality. Once the finalists are chosen, the American public has to decide who stands out among that group. Some people have a certain "something" that makes people like them and that doesn't necessarily = a good voice. There are lots and lots of bad singers who have record deals because they have a quality people want.

this also could be why record sales are pretty flat. i'm hearing that past winners aren't doing so good with record sales at all, and that a few have been dropped from their labels. these average people just don't have staying power, and once the competition is over, people generally don't care about them, or at least don't care enough about them to support their careers.

It seems to me they're trying to showcase talent, not cheapen it, and voting for the worst goes against that.
I do agree that the voting system needs to be revamped.

they only showcase what they consider to be talent. you don't see how many people who probably had more talent being turned away...because they didn't fit some simon standard of marketability.

Absolutely. It gets people talking. Whether they're laughing "at" them, "with" them, or even disgusted that the so-very-cruel producers would put them on t.v. ... people are talking! That's what it's all about.
BTW, I attended the initial auditions w/ a friend of mine in Philly this summer, and from the very beginning, they remind you that this is a TELEVISION show, and that by auditioning, you're consenting to be put on t.v., for better or worse. They also remind everyone to consider the previous seasons' audition shows, and understand that becoming "that" person is a possibility! They even gave people a chance to leave at that point.

i'm not accomplishing anything. i'm just one person. you can vote for whoever you want to vote for.
and i'm not spending an awful lot of time and effort posting on this thread...i believe this is the first day i've posted in it...and i have what, 3 or 4 posts in it....it's pretty effortless to type since i type 70 wpm...so.......
i'm amazed this show has been on the air for 7 seasons, that's all. it's interesting to read the posts of people who believe that such shows actually showcase any sort of talent. i find it fascinating.
