Ladies, thank each of you for your prayers and kindness. Please join me in praying about an upcoming meeting with an upper administrator on next Wednesday, the 14th. Present on the Outlook invitation were the second in command in the company, a high ranking dean, and then myself and the three other people in the company with the same job title. Again, thank you.

Could use some prayers and advice, ladies. Just got the dreaded attendance talk from my supe this morning. I've had to leave early a couple days these last two weeks. I can see his point in that it leaves the office short-handed, but I don't know what to do about it. I've got three little ones, a husband that works odd hours as a supervisor (so he can't take off easily) and two of my children have special medical concerns. I'm seriously considering taking a week off this summer to do nothing. Maybe that would help me recharge my batteries and not feel so overwhelmed. I haven't taken a vacation since February of 2004 because I hoard my time for Marshall's surgeries... plus two maternity leaves left me pretty wiped out too. So advice, encouragement, anything needed! --Kat

If you have the time to take, I would take a week to rest and relax. It's hard when your children are little and they get sick. What is one supposed to do? I see it from both sides because I have children and they get sick and I have to take time off from work. On the flip side, I have an employee who often has to leave with her kids (her husband doesn't or can't help) and it causes a hardship. I work with ladies whose children are older and they tell me that it gets much easier when the kids are a little older. Hang in there.

Kat: I have been thinking of your predicament. I also have another lady who works for me whose Mother is elderly. She frequently has to leave to take her to Dr. appointments, hair appointments, etc. The difference between her and the other lady is her attitude. S always lets me know (if possible) in advance. She offers to make up time and actually does it. She is pleasant to be around and doesn't office gossip. D, on the other hand, does none of those things and has an attitude of entitlement. Attitude goes a long way in the work place, IMO. My best advice to you (and myself as I am in the same boat) is to be respectful of your co-workers, upbeat, and positive. If you do have to take time off, thank your boss and the co-worker who is covering for you. And, cover for them when something happens in their personal life. It eventually happens to everyone.

That is wonderful. Considering what has been going on where you work I was hopin' & prayin' that would be the result. I saw opportunities in that news story. So sad that folks need to go but glad you have the chance to grow. Regarding leave. I'm NEVER sick and I had someone suggest I call in sick when DeeDee was ill and I couldn't do it. But, I always assume I can take off. It comes from temping all these years - I work when I'm available. I knew last summer I was going to scout camp the last full week in June. I told the people I work with that I would be off that week. I didn't tell my supervisor. I figure I'm not that important and two month's notice was enough (there is no policy in place) We got an email that there would be an audit that week. It is for a certification and I have not been involved in the process at all. The email mentioned my department would be audited and I talked to my boss - no vacation for me. :( What burns me is that I had no idea it was coming. I don't think putting a request in earlier would have changed things. But, reading your post Laura makes me feel REALLY GUILTY. I just hate to put in for my mom's dr appt because they change. I hate to put in for family days because they are almost always weather dependent. In other words, I don't want to ask, get approved and then need to change my mind. I hate how that looks too. I have to get better at this.

Oh, we will be thinking of you. I don't know if it will be fondly or jealously. Have a GREAT trip. (BTW, talked to the boss about leaving today. No problem. I really take him for granted)

Well, I will be unemployed as of the 29th. Layoffs--cuts--again.... And you know how it goes...last one hired...first one fired. It just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth that a co-worker of mine isn't being let go over myself. Yes, she has been there longer (by a year)---but I know for a fact that our immediate supervisor talked to his supervisor about very possibly letting her go due to various things. The various reasons haven't changed (which is why the conversation took place to begin with). So why me?!?! I'll never get it. Oh, well. At least this way I'll get to enjoy my summer with my son before he starts kindergarten this fall. And no, I most likely won't be getting a job for the summer (DH has told me not to). I'm a teacher & I do have a teaching position for this fall...so any job would only be temporary.

I am sorry for the lay off; I've been there, and it always hurts. But it does sound like you have a nice opportunity with your son before you start your new job. Having the next job already is great.

((((daughter of faith))))) I'm so sorry. Praying for God to make lemonade out of these lemons. I won't give anymore platitudes, but will say that our Hope is in the Lord. God bless you and your family.

Thanks, ladies. I am working hard to find joy in the situation. Right now I'm just bombarded with trying to figure out how we're going to pay all of our bills, plus save for a cross country move. Since I am being laid off--I could draw unemployment. But...I'm not sure how all of that works & if the amount would even be worth it, etc. Do y'all know anything about this? I'm in California...

I got laid off last year, and collected unemployment for one week before they cut me off for turning down a job. They base how much you get off how much you were making. If you were laid off you should have no problem getting your money. In most states it is easy to sign up online. Then they will verify with your former employer that you were laid off for the reason you say. Each week you have to put in that you want another check and you will be asked questions about have you been applying, did you turn down any jobs, did you make any money working the past week, etc. You will need to keep a log of jobs you have applied for, and they may require you to apply for some jobs. You cannot turn down any jobs or they will stop giving you your money.
