Hey Kim ... did you actually notice the pool in the pic with the full kit??? It's the same kiddie pool you can buy at Walmart for $25 ...
Just thought I'd give you a heads up before you spent $$ on it. Now, La Bassine, on the other hand, is an actual birthing pool with all the frills ... so it is a LOT pricier!

Really, eh? I'll have to check that out ... I wonder if we could get it from another store (we don't shop at Walmart).

Amazon.com has a lot of kiddie pools too. I am thinking of getting one from there.

You may be able to rent one. I found it isn't much cheaper than buying, but I do think one day I will buy one and rent it out at a decent price, lol.

You can rent birthtubs, and it is sanitary, only because they put a tub liner in it that is fitted and disposed of after the birth. Some places will rent and ship. Others have to be local. One such is 9 Months and Beyond LLC (in my neck of the woods).

What does it mean to have a green placenta? After delivering on Monday I overheard my doc tell one of the nurses that my placenta was green. Now I'm curious.

typical hospital talk for the staining that occurs on it from meconium being passed from the baby before they are born. Did they say when your water broke if it was discolored or if he had gone to the bathroom in there?

That sounded weird at first, but after having seen meconium for the first time, I'd believe it would stain anything!

I need some advice. I found out that this homebirth midwife is a CNM which in the state of PA is the only midwife recognized and therefore legal to attend a homebirth. My husband will only do a homebirth if it's legal the whole way around. I respect him on this. However, I've called her on friday, and then again on wednesday, left messages both times. I've never dealt with a homebirth midwife and so I'm not sure how long I should wait. I mean, I know I can go without prenatal care for a little bit, I do have time, as I have my last appt with my current practice tomorrow, so I have a whole other month. But if I have to transfer records and try to get an appt with this other practice I could go to, I'm not sure how long I'll have to wait. Although, if I'm pregnant, I'm sure they'd get me in. What do you think? How long should I wait?

Kathryn - I know for my first appointment with my midwife clinic, they took almost 2 weeks to get back to me with a date. Personally, however, I'd be pursuing other options at the same time - so calling another practice just-in-case she is unable to take you due to your due date. She might have another client due around your date and may not be able to take you on as a client - especially if she's just one midwife.

I already know I can go with this other practice, I did call and they are accepting new patients. I really want a homebirth and want to hear from this midwife first, but maybe in the interest of time I should just set an appt with the practice. I dunno.

Maybe set up the appointment for a month from now and hopefully you'll hear back from the m/w before then and you can cancel? Or you can just wait and see if you hear back before making any appts. If you're comfortable without care for a while (1 or 2 mos), then I wouldn't stress about it! Everything's been fine, and I'm sure you can check your blood pressure at the pharmacy =)

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. I am so type A, it's not funny. I plan plan plan, but am a bit better with it this time around. Maybe because things are going so well. I think I will wait until next friday to make an appt with the other practice, if I don't hear back from the m/w by then. I will try her again on monday. Next friday would be two weeks, so I think that's waiting long enough. Maybe that's a indicator. She's got too many patients. We'll see, I don't want to write her off yet.

Yeah, me too. I am trying to be ok with whatever happens, as I know the Lord knows best. And I will be. Ultimately a healthy baby is the goal, how to get there, though, homebirth seems best. Pray that this works out for God's glory and not mine.

Ended up making an appt at my dr's today for my 24 week checkup. I'll already be there for my follow-up u/s so I figured why not. Plus I'll be seeing the midwife I like. I feel ok about this move, as it will provide some more time for me to get things squared away. Still haven't heard back from the hb mw. I'll let ya know as soon as I do.

Ok, the homebirth option is looking very good. I heard from the midwife, she sounds good on the phone. Not a know it all, you know what I mean. But very pleasant and knowledgable to talk to. Hubby is ok with her explanation of the legal issues. He wants me to find out two different things, which are valid, ie - transfer in case of complications, and what would she do in the case of my last birth problems. So I am waiting to hear back from her. After that we'll all meet and further the interview.
Here's what I need from all those who have homebirthed or are going to homebirth: Why are/did you do it? What makes/made you think you could do it? What would you suggest to someone who is seriously thinking of doing it? How do you handle the questions and weird looks?
I feel very confident we can do this. I want to do this. After all I have studied I feel this is the best option. The healthiest option for all of us. And part of me does want Nadia there. I dunno, I guess I think it would all help us to bond better. I am still laying this before the Lord and submitting to His will. However, I am still asking for it. He calls us to ask, does He not?

Why did we do it? After our first birth experience, and the subsequent insistance during my second pregnancy that we WOULD be having another c-section, and after a LOT of study and thought on the matter, we truly felt it was safer to birth at home. Specifically, part of that, was that where the mom feels safer, is generally the safer place to birth. That is on top of the domino effect of interventions.
What made me think I could do it? I don't quite know when the change happened, but sometime after Brandon's (totally botched) pregnancy and birth, I came to realize that my body and I are one...I know it better than anyone, God made it to do what it does, and I could trust it.
What would I suggest? Lots, lots, lots of reading! Everything from the Freebirth site to the Sears books on pregnancy and childbirth. Immerse yourself into birth stories that are NOT your next-door-neighbor's flat-on-the-back-give-me-drugs-now standard. I have even read anthropological books on birth..one specifically I would recommend if I hadn't loaned it to someone who then moved to Mexico! LOL
How did I handle the questions and weird looks? Well, let's be honest here...I am almost never afraid to state my opinion, and I have been trying to learn tact and graciousness for 10 years now. But with my mom, who was extremely worried, I wrote her a research paper. Everyone else who asked was sorry shortly thereafter when Jody and/or I would launch into statistics and our reasons for doing so  And when you talk about it, you find other homebirthers, too! That is really encouraging!
